Yes—you can run OBS on a rented Windows server to send a continuous stream to YouTube, provided the server’s Windows image, graphics support, session behavior, and outbound bandwidth suit the workload. The core setup is to enable YouTube Live, configure OBS with the stream URL and key, choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings, test the connection, and arrange a cautious startup routine. A scheduled OBS launch is not, by itself, a guarantee of recovery after a crash, reboot, or network failure.
This approach is most useful when you need OBS scenes or other production controls. If you are looping uploaded documentaries rather than producing a live camera or desktop feed, a cloud service may be simpler; see the option below.
What you need before you begin
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- A rented Windows server that the provider confirms is suitable for OBS, including its graphics support, remote-session behavior, restart options, and sustained outbound traffic.
- OBS installed on that server, plus the video, audio, scenes, and overlays you intend to broadcast.
- A reliable network path from the server to YouTube with sufficient sustained upload capacity.
OBS’s published basic requirements list Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. They do not establish that every Windows Server edition, virtual GPU, or remote desktop configuration is supported. OBS also cautions that meeting basic requirements does not ensure a particular streaming workload will succeed. Confirm specifics with both the server provider and OBS’s system requirements before committing to a server.
Enable YouTube Live and create a stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- If prompted to enable live streaming, complete the channel verification and activation steps. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create a stream and choose its visibility—public, unlisted, or private—based on who should be able to watch it.
- In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with people who do not need access. Reset it in YouTube if you think it has been exposed. YouTube describes stream setup in its encoder setup guide and stream settings help.
Check the server before building the broadcast
A rented server is not simply a desktop PC that happens to be elsewhere. Provider configurations differ, and the available documentation does not establish behavior for a particular VPS. Ask the provider these questions before installing OBS:

- Which exact Windows image and edition will the server run?
- Is compatible graphics support available, and how is it exposed to desktop applications such as OBS?
- Will OBS continue running if you disconnect or log out of Remote Desktop? Does closing the session end or disrupt desktop applications?
- What happens after a provider maintenance restart, Windows update, or unexpected reboot? Can the instance restart automatically?
- What sustained outbound bandwidth and traffic allowance are included, and are there throttling or usage limits?
Do not treat a successful OBS installation as proof that long-running encoding and streaming will be stable. Test the exact scenes, resolution, frame rate, and session arrangement you intend to use.
Install OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Install OBS from the official OBS download page and launch it in the Windows session you plan to use for the stream.
- Create the scene or scenes you need. Add the appropriate video and audio sources, then check that the preview shows the intended picture and that audio meters respond.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service if the available connection flow suits your setup; otherwise select a custom streaming server and enter the stream URL from Live Control Room.
- Paste the YouTube stream key into the key field. Keep it private, including in scripts, task settings, logs, and support screenshots.
- Save the settings, return to the main OBS window, and run a short private or unlisted test before using a public broadcast.
Choose encoder settings and bandwidth
YouTube’s current live encoder settings recommend RTMPS for encrypted transport to YouTube. The page lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; video codecs H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it lists AAC or MP3 and a recommended 128 Kbps audio bitrate. For SDR, it specifies Rec. 709.
For a straightforward H.264 setup, use YouTube’s resolution-and-frame-rate table to pick a starting bitrate. The examples below are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed server requirements:

Choose within the relevant range according to the content’s motion and detail, the quality of the source, the encoder’s stability, and the server’s actual sustained upload. A documentary with mostly static imagery may behave differently from fast-moving footage, but the stream still needs enough bitrate to avoid visible degradation.

Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds if OBS exposes it in the selected encoder’s settings. Confirm the output resolution and frame rate under Settings > Video; do not select a higher output than the server can encode consistently. Match the audio configuration to your source and YouTube’s supported settings.
Bandwidth must cover the combined bitrate of the primary and any backup stream. YouTube recommends 20% headroom over that combined bitrate and emphasizes a reliable connection in its encoder settings and network guidance. A speed test is only a snapshot: confirm the provider’s sustained outbound capacity and test under the real server conditions.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start with the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, scenes, and bitrate; a test with a blank scene does not validate the real workload.
- Start streaming from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health messages.
- Watch for dropped frames, encoding overload, missing audio, black sources, and unstable connection indicators. Fix the issue before relying on a long-running event.
- Observe the server and broadcast for a meaningful period, including after disconnecting from the remote session in the way you expect to manage it. Confirm with the provider whether that session behavior is supported.
- Keep a way to monitor the stream and respond to failures. A continuously running process without monitoring can fail silently.
Automate startup, but plan for recovery separately
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. It also says that when OBS is started through Windows Scheduled Tasks or other automation, the working directory should be set to the folder containing obs64.exe. See the OBS launch parameters documentation for the supported options.
- Test an OBS shortcut or scheduled task that launches OBS with
--startstreamingwhile the intended OBS profile, scene collection, and stream settings are available. - For a scheduled task, set the program to the OBS executable and set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - Test the launch while logged into the server, then test the specific restart and session conditions your provider supports. Do not assume that a task will run in an interactive desktop session after every kind of reboot or logout.
- Decide how you will detect a failed stream and restart OBS or the server. Account separately for Windows updates, provider maintenance, OBS crashes, lost connectivity, and expired or reset stream keys.
The launch switch starts streaming; it does not promise persistent user sessions, startup after every reboot, automatic recovery from every failure, or alerting. Build and test those parts for the specific server rather than assuming they are covered by OBS.

YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not guarantee an archive for one uninterrupted 24/7 stream. Staying live, recovering from outages, retaining a recording, and keeping a replay available are separate requirements.

If a replay matters, do not rely on a single event running for a day or longer to produce an archive. Check YouTube’s current documentation and design a separate recording or segmented-event workflow that meets your retention needs; test that workflow before depending on it.
