For a do-it-yourself OBS setup, create a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and private stream key into OBS, choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and test the preview before going live. Plan the lesson rotation, copyright checks and archives as carefully as the encoder: YouTube archives streams under 12 hours, and a 24/7 schedule alone does not guarantee monetization.
1. Check channel eligibility and prepare your lessons
YouTube requires an encoder-livestreaming channel to be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and be operated by a creator who is at least 16. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. See YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility and activation guidance.
Prepare original lesson recordings or material for which you have the necessary rights. Organize the stream around identifiable subjects—such as Python fundamentals, data structures or database design—and give lessons useful labels. A stream that simply repeats the same material with little variation may not provide meaningful educational value for monetization purposes.
- Check that code, slides, music, sample data and any third-party clips are cleared for livestream use.
- Make spoken explanations and on-screen text legible at the selected resolution.
- Use an audio source that makes explanations easy to understand. YouTube lists an external microphone among typical livestream hardware, but an additional purchase is not necessary if your existing audio is clear.
2. Choose how the stream will run
Run OBS on a computer
YouTube describes encoders as suitable for screen sharing and more advanced production, and lists OBS as free, open-source software. Add a display or window capture for your code and slides, and add an audio input if you are narrating. This approach gives you direct control over the production, but the computer and its internet connection must remain available while it streams. If you plan to speak live or respond to chat, make sure someone is available to operate the broadcast.

Loop prerecorded lessons from the cloud
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded streams. Gyre describes uploading videos, arranging a playlist, connecting a YouTube account and scheduling the loop. This is a different workflow from running OBS locally; the vendor’s performance or growth claims should not be treated as independent guarantees. Whichever method you choose, check how it handles restarts and how you will manage archives.
3. Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream or schedule one, then select the Stream tab. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the available controls.
- Copy the connection details: Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server connection, use the server URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Protect the key: YouTube describes the stream key as being like a password. Do not publish it or share it outside trusted operators. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Use an encrypted connection where supported: Choose RTMPS when your encoder offers it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it to encrypt the connection to Google’s servers.
- Build the scene: In OBS, add a screen-capture source for your code or slides and select the intended audio input. Check that notifications, private information and unrelated desktop content will not appear in the capture.
You can schedule a stream so it appears as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers may opt to receive a notification. YouTube also supports reusable custom stream keys and encoder auto-start/auto-stop settings. Test these controls with your actual setup before relying on them unattended.

4. Set a sustainable resolution and bitrate
Use an upload-speed test on the connection the streaming computer will actually use; advertised download speed does not establish upload capacity. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. If you configure primary and backup feeds, account for both. Its encoder settings guidance gives 14 Mbps H.264 ingest as a recommended reference for 1080p at 30 fps. Treat that as a starting reference, not a requirement: choose a lower resolution or bitrate if the real upload path cannot sustain it with headroom.
- Test with representative screen movement and the audio you will use during lessons.
- Check that text remains readable at the chosen resolution and that motion does not stutter.
- Open the Live Control Room preview and confirm the watch page works on a phone before launch.
- Monitor stream health and audio/video during the broadcast; a successful encoder connection alone does not establish that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
5. Test, launch and monitor the broadcast
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- Inspect the preview for framing, readable code, correct audio and accidental desktop content.
- Check the public or scheduled watch page on mobile, including whether the lesson title and description identify the subject clearly.
- Start the broadcast from the encoder or Live Control Room according to the workflow you selected, then watch the health indicators rather than assuming the stream will remain connected.
- For unattended operation, test what happens after a connection interruption or encoder restart. Do not depend on auto-start or auto-stop until you have confirmed the behavior in your own setup.
6. Plan archives and qualifying watch hours
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, so do not assume the entire stream will be saved as one replay. If you need accessible lesson archives, plan breaks or separate broadcasts and verify archive behavior for your chosen workflow. YouTube’s August 12, 2026 explanation of qualified YPP watch hours says qualifying hours must come from public long-form videos or archived livestreams; hours from livestreams that are not archived do not qualify. An uninterrupted stream that is not archived therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed source of qualifying public watch hours.

7. Protect rights and understand monetization limits
YouTube scans livestreams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, a placeholder may replace the stream; persistent third-party material can interrupt or terminate it. Even licensed material may be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Credit, permission or an educational purpose alone does not ensure that Content ID will not match content or that a stream will be monetizable. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming copyrighted content.
YouTube’s livestream terms state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” They also place responsibility for applicable requirements in the territory where the live stream is provided on the provider. The available platform guidance does not establish India-specific licensing, tax, child-audience or other regulatory obligations for an individual creator; check the rules relevant to your particular situation. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams as well as uploaded videos. Its policy update dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible. A computer science stream should offer genuine instruction and meaningful variation; reused material needs meaningful commentary, modification or educational value.
