Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo hear a prerecorded clip in the church while OBS sends it to YouTube, set OBS’s Monitoring Device to the headphones, speakers, or audio-interface output you will use, then choose the clip’s monitoring mode in Advanced Audio Properties. Use Monitor and Output if OBS is not otherwise capturing the clip’s playback; use Monitor Only if OBS captures that same playback through Desktop Audio. Test a short recording before the service to catch silence or doubled audio.
Choose the audio route before setting the mode
The right setting depends on how the clip reaches OBS’s stream output. A Media Source can be sent to the local monitoring device, to OBS output, or both. Separately, Desktop Audio or another capture source may also be carrying the computer’s playback. If both routes send the same sound into OBS, viewers can hear it twice.
- OBS does not capture the playback output: choose Monitor and Output if the clip must be heard locally and included in the stream.
- OBS captures that playback through Desktop Audio: choose Monitor Only for the Media Source when you need local playback too. Desktop Audio carries the sound to OBS output.
- The clip should be in the stream but not heard locally: choose Monitor Off and verify the recording contains it.
These are routing choices, not universal presets. Church computer and interface connections vary, so verify the path with a test recording.
Set the monitoring device in OBS
- Open Settings > Audio in OBS Studio.
- Find Monitoring Device and select the output the operator should listen through: for example, the computer’s headphone output, speakers, or an audio-interface output. The exact device name depends on the connected computer and hardware.
- Apply the setting and confirm that the selected output is connected and available. If using wired headphones, check that their connector matches the selected computer or interface output.
OBS distinguishes the local destination from the source’s monitoring behavior: the Monitoring Device chooses where monitored audio is heard, while each source’s monitoring mode determines whether it is monitored and/or sent to OBS output. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set the prerecorded clip’s monitoring mode
- Open the scene containing the prerecorded video and start playback so its audio source is active.
- In the Audio Mixer, open Advanced Audio Properties from the mixer gear or the Edit menu.
- Locate the audio entry for the clip’s Media Source.
- Choose the monitoring mode that matches the route you identified: Monitor and Output, Monitor Only, or Monitor Off.
- Play the clip and listen through the selected headphones, speakers, or interface output. Watch the relevant mixer meter as well.
In OBS’s Video Call Streaming Tutorial, the modes distinguish local monitoring from OBS output. Monitor Only does not put that source into OBS output by itself. It is suitable when another captured path—such as Desktop Audio—already carries the playback into the stream.
Check for duplicate capture sources
If the clip is audible twice in the recording, inspect whether Desktop Audio and another output-capture source are both carrying the same playback. Also check whether the Media Source is set to Monitor and Output while its monitored playback is being captured separately. Adjust the route so the stream receives one copy, then record and listen again.

OBS cautions that adding an Audio Input/Output Capture source while the same device remains enabled globally can cause echo. Review the relevant global devices and scene sources in the OBS Audio Sources guide before removing or changing a capture path.
Rehearse the audio before going live
Use the same scene and ordinary service configuration you plan to use live. OBS recommends listening early in the device chain where possible, then again through OBS Audio Monitoring, and recording and playing back a session before a real broadcast.

- Play the prerecorded clip and confirm it is audible through the intended room output.
- Watch the relevant OBS meters while it plays; check that the source is not muted and that the level is not clipping.
- Make a short recording and listen to the file. Confirm the clip is present once, with the other program audio intact.
- If the recording is silent or doubled, trace whether Desktop Audio or another output-capture source is carrying the same signal before changing the Media Source mode.
Troubleshooting common problems
The operator hears nothing
Check that Monitoring Device names the output actually connected to the headphones or speakers. Confirm the Media Source is playing, the intended source is not muted, and its monitoring mode includes local monitoring: Monitor Only or Monitor and Output.
The room hears the clip, but the recording does not
If the source is set to Monitor Only, that source is not sent to OBS output. Use Monitor and Output if OBS is not capturing the playback by another route. If Desktop Audio is already capturing it, check that capture and confirm the recording rather than enabling a second route blindly.

The recording contains doubled clip audio
Look for overlapping paths: the Media Source on Monitor and Output plus playback captured as Desktop Audio, or a device enabled globally and again as an Audio Input/Output Capture source. Ensure only the intended path carries the clip into OBS output, then make another test recording.
The meter moves but the recording is silent
A meter shows activity at a point in OBS’s audio chain; it does not by itself prove that the final recording contains the intended source. Check the source’s monitoring mode and output route, then listen to a newly recorded test file.
