To schedule a recorded sermon as a YouTube Live event, create a scheduled stream in YouTube Studio and use an encoder such as OBS to play the sermon file into it at service time. Studio creates the event and supplies its stream URL and key; it does not provide a direct control for scheduling a local video file as a Live stream. This workflow combines YouTube’s encoder setup with OBS’s documented Media Source playback.

Choose the right format for your church service

Use an encoder-based Live event when you want a scheduled livestream watch page and a video feed sent by an encoder at the event time. The encoder route requires someone or something to start and monitor the feed.

  • Encoder livestream: Schedule a Live event in Studio, then have an encoder send the recorded sermon as its live video input.
  • Premiere: Schedule an uploaded video to play as a shared viewing event, with reminders and chat. It is not an encoder livestream.
  • Scheduled publishing: Set a private upload to become public at a chosen time. Use this when you simply want the sermon video published on a schedule, not presented as a Live event.

YouTube documents both software and hardware encoders, but a hardware purchase is not established as necessary for playing an existing sermon recording. Choose equipment based on what the church already has, operator familiarity, reliability, and whether it can play local media and connect to YouTube’s ingest service.

Check channel eligibility and prepare the recording

Confirm live streaming is enabled

Before announcing the event, verify that the channel can go live. YouTube says initial live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Its live-streaming tips also specify a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s current status early so you have time to resolve an eligibility issue.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up the sermon in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the service.
  2. Add a Media Source and select the sermon recording. OBS documents common supported video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM.
  3. For a one-time sermon, leave the Media Source’s loop setting off. Decide what should appear when playback ends: if you enable the setting to hide the source when playback ends, prepare an intentional ending scene or end screen.
  4. Test the recording’s picture and sound in the OBS preview. Check that the intended file, audio track, and ending behavior are correct.

This OBS setup and YouTube’s encoder workflow are documented separately; treating them together as a way to feed a scheduled Live event is a practical workflow, not a product-specific feature that YouTube describes as selecting and scheduling a local file.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream. Interface labels can change, so check the current Studio screen if a label differs.
  2. Choose to reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new event.
  3. Enter the sermon’s title and description, then set the date, time, audience, and visibility as applicable.
  4. Choose public, private, or unlisted visibility according to who should be able to watch. A scheduled event can be shared, and viewers may be able to set reminders.
  5. Save the event and open it in the Live Control Room. Copy its stream URL and stream key for the encoder configuration.

Connect OBS and rehearse the stream

Protect the stream key

In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the stream URL and key from the YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in volunteer instructions, screenshots, or shared chat. YouTube provides a reset process if a key is exposed.

Set up early and check the preview

  1. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event.
  2. Start the encoder feed and confirm that the sermon video and audio appear in the Live Control Room preview.
  3. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest option where available. RTMPS is an encrypted extension of RTMP.
  4. Test the chosen resolution and bitrate against the church’s actual upload capacity and encoder settings. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health; there is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every connection and production.
  5. Confirm that the event can be opened from the channel or watch page and check access on a mobile device. Monitor the audio and video during the service.

Run and end the sermon stream

At the planned service time, check the preview and event details, then choose Go live in the Live Control Room. Keep an operator available to monitor the feed and respond if picture or sound fails.

When the sermon is finished, end the event in the Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. Then check the replay in YouTube Studio’s Live content area. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for a longer stream.

Common problems and fixes

  • The channel cannot start a live stream: Check that live streaming has been enabled and that the channel meets YouTube’s current eligibility requirements. Initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  • The Live Control Room shows no incoming video: Check that OBS is sending to the stream URL and key for the correct scheduled event, then confirm OBS has started streaming.
  • The preview is black or the sermon does not play: Check the selected file and Media Source settings in OBS. Verify that the file plays and that the source is visible in the active scene.
  • There is no sermon audio: Check the file’s audio in OBS and confirm the expected audio is present in the Live Control Room preview before the event.
  • The sermon disappears at the end: If the Media Source is set to hide when playback ends, make sure an intended ending scene is ready; otherwise adjust the source’s end behavior before the service.
  • The feed is unstable: Test the encoder and network before the event, check YouTube’s stream-health status, and adjust the encoder settings to suit the available upload capacity.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it using YouTube’s stream-key controls, then update the encoder with the replacement key.

Copyright and replay considerations

Make sure the church has the rights needed for every element in the recording, including music, readings, images, and any third-party video. A recording being suitable for a church service does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it on YouTube. Review YouTube’s current copyright requirements and the church’s permissions before scheduling.

Also consider whether the sermon recording and any accompanying material comply with YouTube’s monetization and reused-content policies if the channel is monetized. A Live format does not remove the need to follow those policies.
