How to Prevent Duplicate Sermons in a Church’s YouTube Live Playlist

Find out whether a sermon repeats because it is listed twice, the playlist loops, or a livestream replay is included—and apply the right fix.

To stop duplicate sermons, first identify whether the playlist contains the same video twice, playback is looping, or an unwanted livestream replay is present. Remove an extra playlist entry, switch off Loop/Repeat, or manage the replay in YouTube Studio—the right fix depends on which layer is causing the repeat.

Identify why the sermon is repeating

  • The sermon appears twice in the playlist: Remove the extra occurrence from the playlist. This removes that entry, not the video from the channel. YouTube’s playlist instructions cover removing videos, and its playlist-management guidance covers editing and reordering.
  • The sermon restarts after the playlist reaches it: Check whether Loop or Repeat is enabled. YouTube documents playlist repeat controls for viewers. Turn off playlist repeat if the congregation should hear the sequence once.
  • An old livestream replay is included: Decide whether the replay should remain on the channel. Remove its playlist entry if it should stay available on the channel but not play in this sequence; change its visibility or delete it in YouTube Studio if it should no longer be available as a channel archive.

Remove the extra sermon from the playlist

  1. Open the church’s intended sermon playlist and scan the entries for the same sermon or livestream replay listed more than once.
  2. Open the More menu beside the unwanted occurrence and choose the option to remove it from the playlist. YouTube’s playlist help explains playlist removal.
  3. Review the playlist to confirm the remaining sermon is in the intended position. Check the playlist again before sharing or embedding it.

Removing a playlist entry does not delete the video from the channel. That distinction matters when the congregation should still be able to find the sermon elsewhere on the channel.

Turn off playlist Loop or Repeat

If the playlist is correct but starts playing from the beginning again after reaching its end, change the viewer’s playback setting rather than editing the playlist. YouTube’s repeat control differs by device: its help documents a Loop control in the playlist box on computer and a Repeat control on TV or gaming consoles. The control’s location can vary by device. See YouTube’s instructions for looping videos or playlists.

Manage an unwanted livestream replay

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Content → Live.
  2. Select the livestream archive you want to manage.
  3. Change its visibility if the church wants to keep the archive but limit who can watch it, or delete it if it should be removed from the channel.
  4. If the archive should remain on the channel but not play in the sermon sequence, remove only its entry from the playlist instead.

YouTube says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived. Its documentation does not establish that creating an archive automatically adds duplicate entries to a playlist. Check the playlist and archive separately rather than assuming one setting fixes both. See YouTube’s archive guidance. Deleting an archive is permanent according to YouTube’s instructions, so change visibility instead if you want to retain it.

Prevent a repeat after each service

Make a short review part of the church’s post-service publishing routine:

  • Check the public sermon playlist for the new archive and confirm it appears once.
  • Verify that it is in the intended order and that older sermons have not been added again accidentally.
  • If a sermon repeats during playback, check Loop/Repeat separately from the playlist entries.
  • If the new livestream should not remain on the channel or in the playlist, make that choice in the appropriate place: the archive’s settings or the playlist itself.

YouTube explains how livestreams are archived in its archive guidance and how playlists are managed in its playlist help.
