For a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, equivalent to a 120-frame GOP at exactly 60fps. Do not exceed 4 seconds (240 frames at 60fps), and use a closed GOP. For 4K60, YouTube’s recommended bitrate is 50 Mbps with H.264 or 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee your encoder or upload connection can sustain them.
Recommended 4K60 settings at a glance
| Setting | Recommended value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 3840 × 2160 at 60fps | Use this only if the source and encoder can produce it. YouTube’s API supports 2160p and 60fps. YouTube Live Streaming API |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions |
| GOP length at exactly 60fps | 120 frames | Calculation: 60 frames per second × 2 seconds. This is the frame-count equivalent of YouTube’s time-based recommendation. |
| Maximum GOP at exactly 60fps | 240 frames | Calculation: 60 frames per second Ă— 4 seconds. Treat this as an upper limit, not the target. |
| GOP structure | Closed GOP | The API flags open GOP as unsupported; YouTube’s HLS guide explicitly requires closed GOP. API diagnostics · HLS ingestion guide |
| H.264 bitrate, 4K60 | 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended | These figures are YouTube’s recommendations for this codec, resolution and frame rate. YouTube Help |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC bitrate, 4K60 | 10 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps recommended | Use only if your encoder and ingestion route support the selected codec. YouTube Help |
Set the GOP and keyframes in your encoder
Encoder menus use different labels. Look for “keyframe interval,” “keyframe frequency,” “GOP length,” or “GOP size.” YouTube specifies the interval in seconds; a frame count is a conversion for a fixed frame rate, not a universal encoder-menu value.
- Set the output format: choose 3840 Ă— 2160 (2160p) and 60fps if both your source and encoder support them.
- Set the interval: enter 2 seconds where the encoder accepts time. If it asks for GOP length in frames at exactly 60fps, enter 120.
- Keep the maximum in view: do not configure an interval longer than 4 seconds. At exactly 60fps, that is 240 frames.
- Choose closed GOP: disable open GOP if the encoder exposes that option. If the encoder does not show a GOP mode, check its documentation or output diagnostics rather than assuming which mode it uses.
- Choose a codec and bitrate: use YouTube’s 4K60 values in the table as a reference, then choose a rate your encoder and upload connection can maintain reliably.
- Test and monitor: before the event, test with audio and movement similar to the intended loop. During the stream, check YouTube’s stream-health messages.
If your encoder uses a non-integer frame rate or a different timebase, prefer its interval-in-seconds setting. Confirm the actual keyframe frequency in the encoder output or YouTube stream health; the 120- and 240-frame conversions assume exactly 60 frames per second.
Other YouTube RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings
YouTube’s general encoder-settings table applies to RTMP/RTMPS. For that route, YouTube recommends these settings in addition to the GOP interval:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use CBR (constant bitrate) encoding.
- Use progressive scan and square pixels.
- Set two B-frames and one reference frame.
- Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it.
- For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit.
- For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit. Its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR; at 3840 Ă— 2160 and above, AV1 streams need at least two tile columns.
Codec choice does not change the two-second keyframe recommendation. For HDR, follow the separate codec and bit-depth guidance rather than applying SDR settings.
RTMP/RTMPS and HLS are not interchangeable setup guides
YouTube supports multiple ingestion types, including RTMP/RTMPS, HLS and DASH. The general bitrate and encoder table above is for RTMP/RTMPS. HLS has separate requirements: muxed M2TS audio/video, H.264 or HEVC video, one AAC audio track, frame rates up to 60fps, and closed GOP. The HLS guide recommends media segments of 1–4 seconds and caps segment length at 5 seconds. Those muxing, audio and segment rules are HLS-specific; do not apply them to an RTMP/RTMPS setup. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
YouTube sets 4K streams to normal latency; low-latency mode is unavailable for 4K. YouTube also transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers. Neither behavior changes the encoder’s recommended keyframe interval.
Test a looping video before going live
A loop should be tested as a live stream, not just previewed as a file. YouTube advises testing ahead of time with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages. For a loop, include the transition where playback returns to the beginning and representative audio in that test. This is a practical check; YouTube’s cited guidance does not identify loop transitions as a separate cause of GOP errors.

Troubleshoot GOP and keyframe warnings
| YouTube message or symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
gopSizeLong or a warning that keyframes are too far apart |
Keyframe interval or GOP length. | Set the interval to 2 seconds; at exactly 60fps use 120 frames. Do not exceed 4 seconds (240 frames at 60fps). |
gopSizeOver |
Whether the GOP exceeds YouTube’s stated maximum. | Reduce the interval to no more than 4 seconds; use 2 seconds as the recommended target. |
openGop |
Whether the encoder is using an open GOP. | Switch to closed GOP if the encoder provides that setting. |
gopMismatch |
Whether the primary and backup streams use different keyframe frequencies. | Match the backup stream’s keyframe frequency to the primary. |
| A warning conflicts with encoder output or observed behavior | Whether there were ingestion errors that could affect YouTube’s GOP-size diagnostic. | Check the encoder’s actual output and the stream behavior alongside the message, then run another test. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can make GOP-size readings incorrect. |
The API exposes these GOP-related diagnostics and describes a frequency of four seconds or less for the long-GOP warning. Check YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation for the issue names and details.
