Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a 4K/60fps YouTube Live stream, plan for about 44 Mbps of sustained upload capacity with AV1 or H.265, or 63 Mbps with H.264, before accounting for other upload traffic. Those targets apply YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom to its recommended video bitrates; they are planning figures, not guarantees.
Calculate the upload speed you need
- Choose the video codec. YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend 35 Mbps at 4K/2160p and 60 fps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, and 50 Mbps for H.264. These are recommended ingest bitrates, not required internet-plan speeds. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table lists the current guidance.
- Add other simultaneous upload traffic. If another person or application is uploading, add its outbound demand to the stream bitrate. The stream needs to share available upload capacity with everything else using the connection.
- Reserve headroom. Divide the combined demand by 0.8, which leaves 20% of capacity unused. YouTube recommends leaving room above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips explain this headroom guidance.
- Compare with measured upload speed. Test the connection you will actually use and compare its upload result—not download speed—with the calculated target. A shared connection may provide less capacity to your encoder than the network’s advertised or nominal speed.
- Test and monitor. Run a test using representative audio and movement, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast. A speed test is a snapshot; YouTube does not specify a minimum test duration or guarantee that the result will hold throughout a long loop.
Examples with no other uploads
| Codec | YouTube recommended video bitrate at 4K/60 | Calculation with 20% headroom | Planning target |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 35 Ă· 0.8 = 43.75 Mbps | About 44 Mbps sustained upload |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 50 Ă· 0.8 = 62.5 Mbps | About 63 Mbps sustained upload |
For example, if an additional upload needs 5 Mbps while an H.264 stream runs at the recommended 50 Mbps, estimate (50 + 5) Ă· 0.8 = 68.75 Mbps of upload capacity. Treat the extra traffic as an estimate if its rate varies.
Use the live-stream bitrate—not the file-upload bitrate
YouTube’s table is for live video ingestion. At 4K/2160p and 60 fps, it lists a minimum of 10 Mbps and a recommended 35 Mbps for AV1 and H.265; for H.264, it lists a minimum of 14 Mbps and a recommended 50 Mbps. The minimum ingest bitrate is not the same as a recommended upload-capacity target: applying the 20% headroom rule to the minimum does not make it YouTube’s recommended setting for reliable 4K/60 streaming.
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 among its encoder options. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. At 4K/2160p, the low-latency option is unavailable; YouTube sets streams to normal latency. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for the full configuration guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What a 24/7 loop changes—and what it does not
A continuous loop does not change the required sustained upload rate: the stream still needs its bitrate available throughout the broadcast. Duration does increase total data sent. As a rough decimal estimate, use Mbps Ă— hours Ă— 0.45 = GB. This is a unit conversion estimate, not a measured YouTube usage figure; overhead and operating conditions can change actual usage. For example, a stream running at 35 Mbps for 24 hours works out to about 378 GB by this estimate.
For an always-on stream, sustained stability matters as much as the result of a single speed test. Upload activity elsewhere on the connection can reduce the capacity available to the encoder, and a network interruption can break the stream. YouTube advises using a reliable network and testing the setup before an event; its guidance does not promise that a tested speed will persist indefinitely. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Troubleshoot insufficient or unstable upload
- YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: compare the stream’s total bitrate with the measured upload capacity available at that time. Stop or reduce other uploads, then test again under representative conditions.
- Upload speed is below the planning target: use a lower-bitrate setting or a connection with more sustained outbound capacity. Download speed does not compensate for insufficient upload capacity.
- Speed tests vary or the stream fails intermittently: check whether other users or applications are sharing the connection and test the network you intend to stream on. YouTube notes that shared office connections may leave an individual with less capacity than the nominal connection suggests.
- The encoder bitrate seems adequate but interruptions continue: monitor stream-health messages and investigate network reliability, not just the bitrate number. A wired Ethernet connection may help if the local Wi-Fi link is unreliable, but a cable cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet plan.
- HDR is required: configure H.265 over RTMP(S), rather than AV1, in line with YouTube’s published HDR guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
