To sell a video online, choose how customers will pay—one-time purchase, rental, subscription, or a ticket for a live event—then use a service that can host the video, deliver it to viewers, and process the sale. Match the access model to the content: sell a finished documentary as a purchase or rental, a growing film library as a subscription, and a premiere or live discussion as pay-per-view. Before choosing a platform, check its fees, payout terms, tax handling, download settings, content protection, and what happens if the service closes.
Choose what viewers are buying
Start by defining the product, not by choosing a platform. Is it one completed film, a time-limited viewing, an ongoing collection, or a scheduled event? The answer determines how long customers should have access and whether you need recurring billing, a one-time checkout, or a ticketed live stream.
- A single finished film: Offer a purchase for continuing access or a rental for a limited viewing window. Confirm whether a purchase includes a downloadable file or streaming access only.
- A documentary series or growing library: Consider a subscription if you can keep adding value through new films, episodes, or collections. A subscription makes less sense if viewers are paying repeatedly for a static title with no clear ongoing benefit.
- A premiere or live event: Pay-per-view can charge for access to a single live event or, on some services, a collection of recorded events. Vimeo OTT documents both options.
- Advertising: This is a separate revenue model: viewers watch ads rather than paying directly for each title or access period. It depends on audience scale and platform eligibility. Vimeo OTT describes basic ad integration as an Enterprise option requiring Google Ad Manager; post- or mid-roll ads require Google Ad Manager 360.
Decide the access rules before setting a price
Write down what a customer receives and for how long. These details affect the product page, support requests, and whether a buyer feels the offer matched what was promised.
- Rental: State when the viewing window starts and how long it lasts. Vimeo OTT describes rentals as time-limited streaming without direct downloads.
- Purchase: Say plainly whether it means streaming access, a downloadable copy, or both. On Vimeo On Demand, enabling downloads after a sale does not retroactively give earlier buyers download access, according to Vimeo’s help information.
- Subscription: Explain the billing interval, what is included, how new titles are added, and what happens to access if a subscriber cancels.
- Live pay-per-view: Tell buyers whether the ticket covers only the live broadcast, a replay, or both, and how long any replay remains available.
Shortlist a platform against the actual job
A sales platform may combine a storefront, video management, playback delivery, and payment processing. Compare the functions you need rather than assuming that every service includes the same tools or business terms.

| What to check | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Sales formats | Can you sell subscriptions, individual purchases, rentals, live tickets, or the combination your offer needs? |
| Storefront and delivery | Does the service provide a customer-facing site or apps? How does it ingest, transcode, and deliver video to different devices and connection speeds? |
| Payments and payouts | Which payment processors are supported? When are payouts made, what deductions apply, and what will you actually receive from a sale? |
| Tax and geography | Which customer taxes does the provider calculate or collect, and what filing, registration, or income-tax responsibilities remain yours? |
| Downloads and offline viewing | Can the viewer keep a copy, and can you set that before purchase? Confirm the setting for each access type. |
| Content protection | Is DRM available on the plan you are considering? Check its cost, supported devices, and playback restrictions. DRM controls access; it cannot guarantee that copying is impossible. |
| Continuity and portability | Can you export your video and customer or sales information? What happens to customer access if you leave or the service ends? |
Vimeo OTT
Vimeo’s product documentation describes subscriptions, rentals, purchases, live-event and replay pay-per-view, and advertising under specific Enterprise conditions. Its OTT overview describes adaptive streaming, a content-management workflow for ingestion and transcoding, branded viewing destinations, payment processing via Stripe, and DRM options. These are provider-described features, not a comparative hands-on test.
Uscreen
Uscreen’s product information lists subscriptions, group subscriptions, trials, individual video or course sales, pay-per-view, time-limited rentals, donations, and Stripe and PayPal integrations. It also advertises local-currency pricing and tax collection at checkout. Verify current plan terms and exactly what tax services cover before committing. Uscreen describes its DRM as a beta add-on; its help documentation notes that older devices, software versions, and restricted network environments may have playback problems.

Vimeo On Demand is approaching a shutdown
Vimeo’s seller guidance says Vimeo On Demand will shut down on November 20, 2026. It also says new subscriptions and renewals were disabled after September 21, 2026. Buyers’ streaming access ends at shutdown; a buyer can download a purchased title only if downloads were enabled. That makes Vimeo On Demand a poor starting point for a new long-term storefront. If you already sell there, review Vimeo’s current migration and customer-access guidance before the shutdown.
Set up the offer and test the customer journey
- Prepare the film and its sales materials. Upload the finished video and create a clear title, synopsis, artwork, runtime, language and subtitle details, and any age or content notices viewers need. Make sure you have rights to the film, music, archival clips, photographs, and other material you include.
- Configure access. In the platform’s product or video settings, select the intended model—subscription, rental, purchase, or pay-per-view. Set the access period and download availability before publishing. For a subscription, specify the billing period and what members receive.
- Set and verify the price. Choose an amount and currency appropriate to your audience and offer. Check the checkout preview and any recurring-billing language. Do not estimate earnings from the displayed price alone; payment deductions, tax, revenue shares, and payout terms affect proceeds.
- Review the public sales page. Explain what the customer gets, which devices or apps they can use, whether viewing is online-only, how long access lasts, and how to get help. Avoid implying that a purchase includes downloads or permanent access unless that is what you configured.
- Test as a viewer before promoting it. Open the public page, complete the available preview or checkout flow, and play the video on the devices your intended audience uses. Check subtitles, audio, image quality, playback resumption, and the purchase or cancellation instructions. This is an operational check, not a guarantee of performance on every device or network.
- Promote the offer where your audience already is. Share the sales page through your mailing list, website, social accounts, festival or community contacts, and relevant documentary groups. Make the call to action specific: rent the film, buy it, join the library, or attend the event.
- Review actual transaction statements. Compare gross sales with the provider’s deductions and payouts. Track refunds, failed payments, support questions, and which promotional channels send buyers; use those records to refine the offer.
Work out your net proceeds, not just the sticker price
Platform fees, payment processing, revenue share, applicable taxes, refunds, and payout timing can change what reaches you. As one illustration—not a general fee schedule—Vimeo’s current seller guide, accessed October 3, 2026, gives an example of about $7.80 net from a $10 Vimeo On Demand sale to a New York viewer. Vimeo attributes the difference to a $0.48 transaction fee, $0.85 applicable tax, and $0.87 revenue share. Your result can differ by platform, location, transaction, and terms.

Ask each provider for the current fee schedule and payout terms, and model a sale using your own expected customer location and chosen price. A platform’s handling of certain customer taxes does not settle your own local registration, reporting, or income-tax obligations; seek qualified advice for your circumstances.
Protect the film and plan for service changes
Copyright clearance is part of selling, not an afterthought. Confirm that your licenses cover online distribution, paid access, territories, and the period you plan to offer the film. Keep records of permissions and license limits. A platform’s DRM can make casual access harder, but it is not a promise that viewers cannot record or copy content.

Before building your business around a service, understand how to export your master video, captions, artwork, and relevant sales information, and what happens to customers’ access if you cancel. Check platform notices periodically: the Vimeo On Demand shutdown is a reminder that storefront continuity and customer communication matter as much as the initial setup.

StreamNeo is not a paid video storefront: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, so it does not replace a rental, purchase, or subscription checkout. It may suit a different role in a documentary business, such as running an always-on YouTube channel that introduces viewers to your work and points them toward a separate paid offer. To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded quality streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.

Yes, if the platform supports both access types and you clearly distinguish their duration and download terms on the sales page.
Does DRM prevent viewers from copying a film?
No. DRM is an access-control measure, not a guarantee against copying.
