To run different FFmpeg playlists at different times, combine three separate controls: FFmpeg sequences the files in each playlist, an external scheduler chooses which playlist or FFmpeg process runs at a given time, and YouTube Studio or the Live Streaming API manages the broadcast event. YouTube’s scheduled-event feature does not choose an FFmpeg playlist for you.
How the scheduling pieces fit together
Think of the setup as three layers:
- Media sequence: FFmpeg reads files in a defined order.
- Time-of-day choice: A separate scheduler or wrapper decides which list or process should run.
- YouTube broadcast: YouTube Studio or the Live Streaming API handles the scheduled event and the incoming encoder stream.
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation puts the distinction this way: “A stream enables you to transmit audio-video content to YouTube, and it defines the settings for how you stream your content.” The API documentation models the incoming stream separately from the broadcast event. Scheduling a YouTube event can make it promotable and allow reminders; it does not tell FFmpeg which media list to play.
Prepare an FFmpeg playlist for each time block
The concat demuxer lets FFmpeg read a text file listing media files in order, as though their packets had been muxed together. Make a separate list for each playlist you want the scheduler to select. For example, a list might contain:
file '/media/morning/episode-01.mp4'
file '/media/morning/episode-02.mp4'
file '/media/morning/episode-03.mp4'
Use the concat demuxer with the playlist file as input. A basic invocation is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -f concat -i morning.txt -c copy output.ts
This example illustrates how to point FFmpeg at a concat list; it is not a complete YouTube streaming command. Your final output and encoding options must match the media and the YouTube event you configure.
Check compatibility and paths
- The files should have the same streams, codecs, and time base for reliable concat-demuxer sequencing.
- The demuxer’s default safe mode rejects unsafe paths and directives. Prefer safe relative paths where practical; if you need a different path arrangement, understand the safe-mode behavior before changing it.
- Reported or estimated file durations that are wrong can cause gaps or artifacts. The concat file’s
durationdirective can override a file’s reported duration when necessary. - Do not assume that listing arbitrary videos guarantees a seamless transition. Test the actual files and intended playback flow.
See the official FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for the file-list format, safety behavior, and duration directive.

Choose the playlist by time of day
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer determines file order inside a list; it does not provide the time-of-day orchestration described here. YouTube Studio’s scheduling controls likewise do not select an input list. Use an external scheduler, script, or service wrapper to decide which list or FFmpeg process should run at the chosen time. The particular scheduler and handoff design are implementation choices; the official documentation describes the FFmpeg and YouTube roles separately rather than prescribing a built-in playlist switcher.
One continuous broadcast
For a single continuing YouTube broadcast, arrange the transitions within the playback workflow and have your external scheduler or wrapper select the appropriate list or process at the desired times. Plan how the outgoing sequence ends and the next one begins, and test transitions in the intended environment. The exact handoff mechanism depends on your orchestration setup; do not treat a scheduled YouTube event as an automatic handoff between FFmpeg playlists.

Separate scheduled events
If each time block should be its own YouTube broadcast, create or reuse the event settings in YouTube Studio and start the matching FFmpeg process for that event. This separates event scheduling from playlist selection: the external scheduler chooses the media process, while YouTube manages the event.
Schedule and connect the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, choose Manage, then Schedule stream. Create an event or reuse settings appropriate to your workflow.
- Configure your encoder with the server URL and stream key associated with the event you intend to run. Match the process and playlist to the correct event.
- Start the encoder and wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room. Check that the expected media is arriving, then go live when appropriate.
YouTube’s encoder guidance describes the Live Control Room scheduling and preview workflow: Schedule a live stream.

Choose how to model repeated events in the API
If you automate event creation with the YouTube Live Streaming API, keep the broadcast event and the incoming media configuration conceptually separate. Google documents recurring broadcasts that reuse stream settings, as well as a pattern that creates a distinct liveStream resource for each broadcast. Reuse settings when events share encoder configuration and that fits your automation; distinct resources may fit a workflow that organizes each broadcast separately. The right choice depends on how your scheduler and event management are built.
Consult the official YouTube Live Streaming API documentation for the resource model and event operations.

Test the complete schedule before relying on it
- Verify each concat list independently and confirm that the intended files play in the intended order.
- Check stream, codec, time-base, path, and duration compatibility for the files in each list.
- Run the scheduler across the planned time boundary and confirm it selects the intended playlist or FFmpeg process.
- Confirm that the correct YouTube event, server URL, and stream key are paired with the encoder process.
- Watch the YouTube preview before taking the event live, and test transitions using the actual media and intended environment.
Common problems and fixes
The right YouTube event starts with the wrong playlist
The event scheduler and playlist selector are separate controls. Check the external scheduler’s time rules and the list or process it launches; changing the YouTube event schedule alone will not change FFmpeg’s input.
FFmpeg rejects a file path or directive
The concat demuxer’s default safe mode rejects unsafe paths and directives. Review the list syntax and path arrangement against the concat demuxer documentation, and use safe relative paths where possible.
There is a gap or artifact between files
Check whether the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases, and whether reported durations are accurate. Where a reported duration needs correction, use the concat demuxer’s duration directive and test the transition again.
YouTube does not show the expected incoming video
Confirm that the encoder is using the server URL and stream key for the intended event. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video running on YouTube without maintaining a home FFmpeg scheduler, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
