Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBroken pipe means FFmpeg could not write to its streaming output; it does not identify why. To troubleshoot it, capture the complete log, check whether the failure coincides with a playlist transition, verify the current YouTube stream URL and key, inspect stream health and outbound connectivity, then confirm protocol and encoder settings. No single flag is a universal fix.
What “Broken pipe” tells you—and what it doesn’t
FFmpeg maps the system error EPIPE to “Broken pipe.” That describes a failed write, not its cause. The receiving end may have closed the connection, the network may have failed, a local consumer may have exited, or another output problem may have occurred. The first error in the full log is more useful than the label alone.
Look for the output URL scheme and muxer near the first failure. Log messages such as av_interleaved_write_frame(): Broken pipe and “Error muxing a packet” can appear together; later trailer or muxing errors may be consequences of the original failure rather than separate causes.
Collect the evidence before changing settings
- Save the complete FFmpeg command and log. Keep stderr from startup through failure, along with FFmpeg’s version and build output. Redact the stream key from any command or log you share: YouTube treats it like a password.
- Record when the failure happens. Note whether it occurs immediately, after a long run, or at the end of a playlist item as the next one starts.
- Record the output protocol. Identify whether the command sends to RTMP/RTMPS or uses HLS. Their requirements differ, so do not apply HLS playlist rules to an ordinary RTMP/RTMPS output.
The exact command, FFmpeg build, protocol, and surrounding log are needed to diagnose a particular case. Avoid changing several variables at once; doing so makes it harder to identify which condition mattered.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the YouTube destination and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the current Stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration.
- Check the output URL scheme and address in the FFmpeg command against the URL YouTube currently provides. Do not guess or substitute a URL.
- If YouTube rejects stream startup or the key may be stale, replace it with the current key from Live Control Room.
Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
Check stream health and the outbound connection
In Live Control Room, review stream health while the encoder is running. YouTube recommends checking that the encoder is current and working, monitoring stream health, and testing outbound internet strength. If the local encoded preview looks healthy but YouTube or viewers report trouble, examine the outbound path and whether the available upload rate can sustain the configured stream.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
A successful local encode does not prove the stream is reaching YouTube reliably. Compare what the encoder reports with Live Control Room’s stream-health information and note whether the connection drops at the same time as the FFmpeg error.
Confirm RTMP or RTMPS and the encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted RTMP ingestion. Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room if you choose that protocol, and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports it.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- SSL certificate error: Check that the URL is correct; YouTube advises trying port 443.
- Connection timeout: Verify the URL and that the encoder build supports RTMPS.
- Codec and rate control: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and CBR rate control.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance allows up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for your selected settings and with your sustainable upload capacity.
These are configuration checks, not proof that a particular setting caused the write failure. Keep the chosen resolution, codec, bitrate, and protocol consistent with what the encoder can send and the connection can sustain.
If the failure happens when a playlist item loops
Compare the log time with the end of the current file and the start of the next item. A loop-boundary failure is a useful clue, but it is not proof that looping or stream copy is defective.

One FFmpeg-user mailing-list report dated 20 October 2023 describes a looped MP4 command using -stream_loop -1 -re -i low2.mp4 -map 0 -c copy -f flv ... that logged av_interleaved_write_frame(): Broken pipe around the repeat boundary. That is an individual report, not a general diagnosis.
- Run one source file without the playlist or loop, keeping the output configuration the same.
- Test the loop or item transition under the same output configuration.
- If only the transition fails, inspect stream parameters and timestamp continuity across playlist items.
- If output fails even without transitions, prioritize the destination URL and key, connection, stream health, and encoder operation.
Apply playlist rules only if you are using HLS
YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements are specific to HLS, not ordinary RTMP/RTMPS streaming. For HLS, YouTube requires HTTPS, MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist, no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations from one to four seconds. YouTube describes HLS as segmented ingestion with higher latency than continuous RTMP.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If your output is RTMP or RTMPS, these HLS segment and rolling-playlist requirements do not apply. First identify the protocol in the FFmpeg output URL and muxer before changing playlist behavior.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| Symptom | Checks to prioritize |
|---|---|
| Failure as soon as streaming starts | Current YouTube URL and key, selected protocol, RTMPS support in the FFmpeg build, and any startup rejection in Live Control Room. |
| Failure after a stable run | Full log around the first error, Live Control Room stream health, outbound connection strength, and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable. |
| Failure at a file or loop boundary | Compare timestamps with the transition; test one file and then the transition with the same output settings; inspect parameters and timestamp continuity. |
| SSL certificate error with RTMPS | Check the supplied URL and try port 443, as YouTube advises. |
| Connection timeout with RTMPS | Verify the URL and that the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. |
| HLS output does not behave as expected | Check HTTPS, TS segments, rolling playlist behavior, outstanding segment count, and one-to-four-second segment durations. |
