Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA YouTube stream stopping overnight does not necessarily mean FFmpeg crashed. First establish whether the FFmpeg process exited, stalled, lost its input, or kept running while YouTube stopped receiving acceptable video. Then align timestamped FFmpeg and host logs with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health timeline before testing one likely cause.
The title alone cannot identify the failure. A defensible diagnosis requires the exact command and FFmpeg build, event timestamps, process status, input and host evidence, output or network messages, and YouTube’s health messages.
Preserve evidence before changing anything
Keep the incident artifacts from the failed run. A changed command or restarted host can erase clues, and changing several settings at once makes a later test harder to interpret.
- Save the exact FFmpeg command or the service, container, or scheduler configuration that launched it.
- Record
ffmpeg -version, including the build configuration shown by the installed binary. - Keep the complete FFmpeg log, especially the lines immediately before the final error or last output update. Enable FFmpeg report or logging output as documented for your installed version; see the FFmpeg command documentation.
- Record the run’s start and stop times with timezone, process exit status, supervisor or container events, and host uptime or restart records.
- If FFmpeg remained active, note whether its output counters continued to advance and whether the input source was still available.
- Redact the stream key and other credentials before sharing logs. Retain the protocol and ingest host so the connection can still be assessed.
Without these artifacts, a cause such as a network drop, input failure, or encoder setting remains a hypothesis—not a finding.

Work out what “stopped” means
Start with a timeline, not the viewer-facing symptom. Compare when viewers lost the stream with FFmpeg’s last log activity, process state, host events, and YouTube’s health messages. Use the branch that matches the evidence:
| What the evidence shows | Where to investigate next |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exited | Inspect the final error and exit status, then check the shell, service manager, container, scheduler, and host logs for a termination, restart, or resource event. |
| FFmpeg is still running, but output counters stopped advancing | Check for a stalled input, blocked reads or writes, and process or resource problems. Consult logs from the actual input source; the source type is not established by the symptom alone. |
| FFmpeg counters advance, but YouTube stopped receiving or accepting the stream | Correlate FFmpeg’s output and transport messages with YouTube’s health timeline. Verify the output protocol, ingest endpoint, and stream settings. |
| YouTube reports a health or configuration warning while FFmpeg continues | Match the warning to the relevant codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe cadence, or incoming-media condition. Do not assume a warning alone proves why the process or broadcast stopped. |
These are diagnostic paths, not conclusions about a particular incident. The decisive clue is usually what changed at the same timestamp in the local and YouTube records.

Match FFmpeg logs to YouTube stream health
In YouTube Live Control Room, review the stream-health messages from the relevant time. During a controlled run, note their timestamps as well. YouTube’s guidance covers stream configuration and health, including codecs, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, incoming video, and consistency between primary and backup streams. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates and its stream health troubleshooting guidance.
Use a health message as evidence about what YouTube received or detected, not as proof of a local root cause. For example, a warning about insufficient incoming video tells you to investigate delivery and media flow; it does not by itself tell you whether FFmpeg stalled, the input disappeared, or the connection failed. Match the message to FFmpeg’s log lines and counters before changing settings.

Check the output protocol and reconnection behavior
Read the command carefully to identify the protocol used for the YouTube output and confirm that the endpoint matches it. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance notes that sending cleartext RTMP to a server expecting RTMPS can result in a connection timeout without a sensible response. The Live API documentation describes primary and optional backup ingestion addresses; verify that the configured address is the one intended for the stream.
Only investigate FFmpeg reconnect options when the logs point to a relevant protocol or connection failure. FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and retry or delay limits in its protocol documentation. Whether an option applies depends on the protocol, direction, build, and where it appears in the command.

- Distinguish input reconnection from output reconnection. Options for an input protocol do not automatically repair a failed YouTube output.
- Check the documentation for the exact installed build and protocol rather than copying an option into a command without confirming its context.
- Test recovery behavior deliberately. Retries do not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast or resumption at the exact missing frame.
Compare encoder settings and connection capacity
Once the timeline points to a possible stream-health or delivery issue, compare the actual command settings with YouTube’s current recommendations. Check the configured video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence against the relevant YouTube guidance linked above. Apply the recommendation that matches the ingest codec and video mode you are actually using.
YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health, and choosing a bitrate that the upload connection can sustain. Its published bitrate ranges are operating recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate—not evidence that a particular setting caused this overnight stop, and not a guarantee that a connection can maintain the selected throughput for an entire night.

- Write down the current encoder and output settings from the command or service configuration.
- Compare those values with the applicable YouTube recommendation and any health warning recorded at the stop time.
- Check the measured upload path and relevant network or host logs for evidence of instability, rather than assuming the nominal connection speed is available continuously.
- Change one variable at a time, run a controlled test long enough to exercise the suspected failure mode, and retain before-and-after logs.
A hardware purchase is not a diagnostic step unless the records identify a hardware problem.
Troubleshoot by symptom
FFmpeg exited and the stream ended
- Read the final FFmpeg error and exit status together; an error line without the process status may not explain whether the process terminated.
- Check service, container, shell, scheduler, and host records at the same time for a restart, termination, or other event.
- If the logs end abruptly, investigate host uptime and supervisor records rather than treating the missing final message as proof of a crash cause.
FFmpeg remains active but stops producing output
- Check whether counters advance and whether the source remains readable or available.
- Inspect source-side logs and the FFmpeg input path for a stalled read or missing input.
- Review process and host state around the stall; do not assume the input is a camera, file, or capture device when the source has not been specified.
FFmpeg output continues but YouTube reports missing or unhealthy media
- Compare the health-message timestamp with FFmpeg’s output and transport logs.
- Verify the RTMP or RTMPS protocol and the configured ingest endpoint.
- Compare codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe cadence, and incoming media with YouTube’s applicable guidance.
The connection appears to time out
- Confirm that the endpoint expects the protocol used by the command, especially whether RTMPS is required.
- Inspect the exact protocol error before considering reconnect options, and verify that any option is applied to the correct input or output context.
- Run a controlled test to establish whether recovery occurs; do not assume retries preserve continuous playback.
