1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYouTube scheduling creates the live event; it does not send video files from your NAS. To broadcast a NAS playlist, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder—usually a computer on the same network with access to the NAS folder—to send the video and audio to YouTube. Start the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, and start the scheduled event. The NAS can store and serve the files, but its media-player playlist is not, by itself, a YouTube Live feed.
Choose where the encoder will run
The most straightforward arrangement is to leave the files on the NAS and run encoding software on a computer that can read the shared folder. That computer sends the feed to YouTube. OBS can suit a production that needs scenes or operator controls; a file-oriented encoder such as FFmpeg may suit a repeatable file pipeline. Exact playlist commands, looping behavior and unattended recovery depend on the software and configuration, so test them rather than assuming the NAS or encoder handles them automatically.
| Workflow | Best fit | Main trade-off | Verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer runs the encoder; NAS stores media | Local control or existing hardware | The computer, NAS access and network must remain available | Folder permissions, codec support, playlist order and looping, scheduled start and recovery |
| NAS runs encoder software | Only when the exact NAS model supports the required software | Model, processor, transcoding and package or container support vary | Current model documentation, codec compatibility, process supervision and upload capacity |
| Cloud prerecorded-stream service | Avoiding an encoder that must run at home | Media is uploaded to an external service; features and terms vary | Playlist limits, schedule controls, YouTube integration, retention, pricing and service terms |
| YouTube Premiere | A prerecorded video when a live feed is not essential | It is a different format and audience experience from a livestream | Whether the event actually needs a live feed and live-stream behavior |
NAS media apps demonstrate that an appliance can organize and play files, not that it can encode a folder playlist and publish it as YouTube Live. Synology DSM 7.2 Video Station documentation covers managing and streaming NAS media, and notes that Video Station is unavailable in DSM 7.2.2; QNAP Video Station documentation describes playlists and streaming to local-network devices. Check current support for your exact model and software: Synology Video Station specifications and QNAP Video Station tutorial.
Synology Surveillance Station’s documented YouTube Live broadcast feature is for a selected camera feed, not a playlist from a media folder. Its page describes entering a YouTube RTMP path and stream key and notes H.264 support in that camera context; it does not establish a folder-to-live workflow: Synology Live Broadcast documentation.

Check channel eligibility and prepare the event
YouTube’s current help guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Requirements can change, so confirm the account’s eligibility in YouTube Studio: YouTube live streaming requirements.
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, select Manage > Schedule Stream and configure the event details and intended start time. YouTube’s encoder guide describes this scheduled-event flow: YouTube encoder guide.
- Choose the event’s visibility and share its watch URL as appropriate. A scheduled stream can be promoted and viewers may set reminders.
- In Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Use the event’s connection details, and keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as both the destination and credential the encoder uses to send the feed: YouTube stream settings.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted form of RTMP. In Live Control Room, reveal the RTMPS URL and copy the key into the encoder’s connection settings: YouTube RTMPS instructions. HLS is another option only for compatible encoder and codec setups, with more involved segment requirements and higher latency. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; these are HLS requirements, not settings to apply to ordinary RTMPS: YouTube HLS instructions.

Make the NAS playlist available to the encoder
- On the computer that will run the encoder, connect to the NAS share using the operating system’s network-folder or network-drive feature. The account running the encoder needs permission to read every file and folder in the playlist.
- Use stable file paths and decide the playback order. Confirm that the encoder can access all media without interactive login prompts; a mounted share that disappears after a reboot can interrupt an unattended stream.
- Check that your chosen encoder can read the media’s container, video codec, audio codec and resolution. If it must transcode, confirm that the host can handle the workload. The exact requirements vary with the files and encoder.
- Configure the encoder’s file or playlist input, output destination and stream key for the scheduled YouTube event. Set its behavior when the final item ends—stop, repeat, or wait—according to your intended event. Do not assume that a NAS player’s playlist controls the encoder.
The YouTube connection process is documented, but a single universal OBS or FFmpeg playlist configuration is not established here. Consult the documentation for the specific encoder version and test the complete file-to-YouTube path, including order, audio, looping and what happens when a file is unavailable.
Connect the encoder and start the scheduled stream
- Start the encoder before the event and connect it using the event’s stream URL and key. The encoder, rather than the YouTube schedule, supplies the media feed.
- Wait for the incoming video to appear in Live Control Room preview. Check picture, audio, timing and the intended event before going live.
- When the preview is correct, use the scheduled-event flow in Live Control Room to select Go live, unless your configured auto-start behavior is intended for that event.
- Monitor the stream and confirm it is accessible from the watch page or channel as expected. YouTube’s guidance recommends checking access on mobile and local archives as well as monitoring audio and video: YouTube streaming tips.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees of connection time or performance.

Test the parts that scheduling cannot verify
Before relying on an unattended event, run a private or unlisted test through the same NAS, host, encoder and YouTube event path you plan to use. In addition to confirming YouTube preview and audio, test NAS availability, file permissions, playlist order, whether playback repeats or ends, and the scheduled-event handoff. If the stream must survive interruptions, deliberately test an encoder or network restart and confirm what recovery requires. These checks are practical safeguards; automatic playlist recovery is not established as a universal NAS or encoder feature.
- Confirm the NAS stays reachable and the host can read the share after a restart.
- Check that every playlist item plays in the intended order and that the end-of-playlist behavior is correct.
- Verify the stream key and URL belong to the scheduled event, then make sure the preview contains both video and audio.
- Check the event’s watch page and access from another device.
- Simulate a brief network interruption or encoder restart if unattended operation matters, and document how to resume the feed.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Encoder is not sending, or the connection details do not match the scheduled event | Check that the encoder is running and using that event’s stream URL and key. Confirm the account is eligible for live streaming. |
| Encoder cannot open a NAS file | Share is unavailable, permissions are missing, or the path is invalid | Reconnect the share under the account running the encoder; verify the exact file path and read access. |
| Playlist stops unexpectedly | The playlist may be configured to end after its last item, or a file may be unreadable | Test the final item and end behavior; inspect the encoder’s playlist and logs, then confirm all referenced files are accessible. |
| Picture or audio is missing or incompatible | The encoder may not support a file’s codec or container as configured | Test each file in the encoder and check its supported formats and output settings. Do not infer compatibility from the NAS media player. |
| Stream disconnects when the host or network restarts | The local encoder process or NAS mount did not resume | Check startup and mount behavior after reboot, and test the recovery procedure. YouTube auto-start or auto-stop settings do not replace a working encoder feed. |
| Camera broadcast works, but media-folder playlist does not | A camera-broadcast feature is being treated as a file encoder | Use an encoder workflow that reads the NAS media; Synology’s documented Surveillance Station feature concerns camera video. |
Copyright, reused content and the choice to stream
Only stream media you have the rights to use on YouTube, including music, footage and other included material. A scheduled event and a stream key do not grant those rights. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and channel rules can change, so review the current platform requirements before broadcasting. Also consider whether a prerecorded livestream is the right format: a YouTube Premiere may fit a one-time prerecorded release when a continuously supplied live feed is not needed.
