To schedule a YouTube broadcast from an OBS/VLC playlist, set up the playlist in OBS, schedule the live event in YouTube Studio, then use your computer’s operating-system scheduler to launch OBS with its --startstreaming option. These are separate jobs: VLC repeats the media, YouTube schedules the event, and the computer runs OBS. A looping playlist and scheduled startup do not by themselves provide uninterrupted 24/7 uptime or automatic recovery.
What you need before scheduling
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream, with live streaming enabled. YouTube Help says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; check the channel’s current status and restrictions before choosing an event time. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the broadcast. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation says to install 64-bit VLC so the VLC Video source is available. OBS Media Sources
- Video and audio files you have the right to stream. A live broadcast does not grant permission to use copyrighted recordings, and permission to stream does not guarantee that a video meets YouTube’s monetization or reused-content policies. Review YouTube’s current rules for your channel and material.
- A reliable wired or wireless internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected output, plus a computer that can remain powered on and connected for the entire broadcast.
Build and check the playlist in OBS
Install matching applications
Install OBS Studio and VLC, matching their architectures: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC for the VLC source. OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and can hold a playlist; it is not the same as an OBS Media Source configured for one file. OBS Media Sources
Add the VLC playlist source
- Open OBS and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video. Give it a recognizable name.
- In the source properties, add the local video files to the playlist and arrange them in the order you want them played.
- Set Loop Playlist on for repeat playback. OBS documents this as the default. Set Shuffle Playlist off if you want the same sequence each time; off is the documented default. Verify both options rather than relying on defaults. OBS Media Sources
- Confirm the source is visible in the preview, that the picture fits the canvas as intended, and that the audio mixer shows the expected sound. Play through the playlist in OBS before scheduling.
VLC Video offers playlist controls and uses VLC libraries for extended media support. Do not assume every file format supported by OBS’s separate Media Source is necessarily supported in exactly the same way by VLC Video; test the actual files in your playlist. OBS Media Sources
Schedule the live event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Open Manage, choose Schedule Stream, and create a stream or reuse settings for an existing one. Interface wording can change, so check YouTube’s current encoder instructions if the labels differ. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
- In the stream’s encoder connection details, copy the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate custom service option, and enter the server URL and key as required by the current OBS interface.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or put it in a shared script. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before streaming.
- Save the event, then return to the Live Control Room and confirm the scheduled stream and its intended start time.
Scheduling the YouTube event does not make the VLC playlist loop, and looping the playlist does not schedule the YouTube event. Configure and verify both independently.

Set OBS output for YouTube
In OBS, configure the output resolution and frame rate to match the material and the upload connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video and frame rates up to 60 fps. Check the current YouTube bitrate table for the precise resolution, frame rate, and codec you plan to use rather than relying on a remembered bitrate. YouTube encoder settings
- Connection: Use RTMPS when available in the YouTube/OBS configuration.
- Rate control: Set CBR.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Choose from YouTube’s current table for your selected resolution and frame rate, then confirm the connection can sustain it with headroom.
- Test: Start OBS manually before the planned event, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and listen for audio problems. YouTube recommends preparing and starting the encoder ahead of the event and monitoring audio and video. YouTube live streaming tips
Launch OBS at the scheduled time
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter as automatically starting a stream. Its launch-parameter guidance says that scheduled-task launches should set the working directory (“Start in…”) to the folder containing obs64.exe. The parameter starts OBS streaming; it does not configure a complete scheduler for every operating system, guarantee that YouTube will accept the feed, or provide crash recovery. Windows Task Scheduler
- First test a shortcut to OBS with
--startstreamingadded to its target, following OBS’s launch-parameter instructions. Confirm the correct OBS profile and scene are loaded and the scheduled YouTube event receives the feed. - Create a Task Scheduler task with a trigger for the time you want OBS to start. Set its action to launch the OBS executable with
--startstreamingas an argument. - Set the task’s Start in or working-directory field to the directory containing
obs64.exe, as OBS specifies for scheduled launches. Confirm the task runs under an account that can access OBS, the media files, and the network. - Test the actual task while present. Verify OBS opens the intended scene, the VLC playlist plays, and the Live Control Room shows a healthy incoming stream.
Task Scheduler settings and behavior depend on the Windows version and account configuration. The OBS documentation establishes the launch parameter and working-directory requirement, not a universal unattended-task recipe. The computer must be powered on, connected, and able to run the task at the trigger time.
macOS and other systems
OBS documents launching on macOS through Automator or Terminal using open -a "OBS" --args, but its launch guide does not provide a complete schedule recipe for launchd, cron, or every macOS setup. Do not assume that a command launched from Terminal is automatically scheduled or will run after a restart. Configure the operating system’s scheduler using instructions appropriate to that system, then test the exact scheduled launch and verify the broadcast in YouTube Studio. OBS Launch Parameters

Plan around the limits of a 24/7 broadcast
A VLC playlist can loop locally, but the scheduled YouTube event and its archive behavior are separate. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise that one scheduled event will run indefinitely, nor does it establish how a longer stream will be archived. Check YouTube’s current guidance and plan the event format accordingly; do not label a setup “24/7” as a guarantee of continuous viewing. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
For a local OBS setup, unattended operation also depends on the computer, operating system, power, network, OBS, VLC, and the YouTube connection continuing to work. The documented OBS launch option starts streaming, but the launch-parameter documentation does not promise automatic recovery after a crash or dropped connection. Before relying on the setup, test it for the intended duration and arrange someone to check stream health and restart the system if needed.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from OBS Sources | VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS and check the source menu. OBS Media Sources |
| Playlist stops after one pass | Loop Playlist is off. | Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. Confirm shuffle is set as intended. |
| OBS opens at the trigger time but does not stream | The launch argument, scheduler action, working directory, or account permissions may be wrong. | Test --startstreaming directly, then verify the scheduler’s executable, arguments, working directory, and access to the media. OBS specifies the directory containing obs64.exe as the scheduled task’s working directory. OBS Launch Parameters |
| YouTube receives no signal or reports poor stream health | Incorrect server URL or key, an event mismatch, unstable upload, or unsuitable encoder settings. | Recheck the event’s current connection details and OBS settings. Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance, RTMPS, CBR, and the recommended keyframe interval; inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube encoder settings |
| Video appears but audio is absent or wrong | The media file, VLC source, OBS audio routing, or mute state may be responsible. | Play the file in OBS, watch the audio mixer while it plays, and verify the intended audio source is not muted. Test the live preview before the event. |
| Scheduled event starts but the broadcast is not continuous | Scheduling an event and looping a playlist do not recover a failed computer, application, network, or YouTube connection. | Check the local machine and Live Control Room. Test the full unattended workflow and decide how failures will be noticed and handled; do not treat --startstreaming as an automatic-recovery feature. |
