You can stream a prerecorded video to YouTube without leaving a home computer on: run an encoder on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine and send the file to a YouTube live event over RTMPS. The workflow is to confirm the VM has outbound internet access, create the event and obtain its RTMPS URL and stream key, configure an encoder for the source file, then check the preview and stream health before broadcasting.
What you need before starting
- An OCI tenancy and a VM that can read the video file and sustain the intended encode and upload. A Mumbai region name alone does not establish that a particular VM shape is available or fast enough.
- A prerecorded video accessible to the VM, either on its disk or through a storage arrangement you have configured.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live event, plus its event-specific stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- An encoder on the VM that supports the source file and YouTube’s chosen ingest settings.
This is an outbound streaming workflow: the encoder connects from the VM to YouTube. You do not need to open an inbound port on the VM for YouTube ingest.
1. Check the OCI region, VM and network
Confirm region and compute availability
If you plan to use OCI Always Free compute, Oracle says those instances must be provisioned in the tenancy’s home region. Confirm that the home region is Mumbai before relying on this option. Check the current console for eligible shapes, quotas and capacity; temporary host-capacity shortages can prevent provisioning. A listed shape is not a guarantee that it is available now or suitable for your encode.
Oracle lists 10 TB per month of outbound data for Always Free resources on its Always Free resource page, whose year is not stated. Check the current terms and your tenancy’s usage before relying on that allowance.

Verify outbound connectivity
For a VM in a public subnet, OCI’s public-subnet quick action configures an internet gateway, route rule and security rule for an instance with a public IP. In an existing network, inspect the subnet route table, internet gateway, security list or network security group, and the VM’s public-IP or other egress arrangement. OCI security lists act as virtual firewalls; the default list allows stateful egress, but customized rules may differ. A private VM needs a configured egress route, such as a NAT gateway. 2. Create the YouTube event and retrieve RTMPS details
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live event you intend to use.
- Find the event’s stream URL and stream key. Select or reveal the RTMPS URL if the interface initially shows an ordinary RTMP URL.
- Use the exact RTMPS endpoint and key assigned to that event. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies TLS over port 443; do not substitute a guessed URL or pair one event’s key with another event’s endpoint.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not expose it in public logs, screenshots, shell history or source control. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live controls before streaming.
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. YouTube also documents HLS and DASH for specialized encoder implementations, but they involve additional packaging and upload requirements; the ordinary encoder workflow here uses RTMPS. If an encoder constructs its own TLS connection, YouTube’s developer guidance says the destination hostname must be sent through SNI. 3. Configure the VM encoder for the video
Install or use an encoder on the VM that can read your file and publish to YouTube’s RTMPS destination. Configure its server or destination field with the event’s RTMPS URL and supply the matching stream key. The exact command or UI settings depend on the VM’s operating system, encoder, file codecs, audio tracks and desired output; no specific command has been validated here, so do not copy an unverified command as if it were tested.
Choose compatible output settings
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. Follow YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate table for your chosen output resolution. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that every VM can encode every profile in real time.

Make sure the VM can decode the source and encode or pass through the selected profile at the required rate. Higher resolutions and frame rates can raise network and compute demands. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; treat this as guidance, and ensure the total stream bitrate does not exceed the VM’s available outbound bandwidth. Consult YouTube’s encoder setup guide and encoder settings and streaming tips for the current recommendations and bitrate table.
4. Test, preview and run the broadcast
- For a test, use an unlisted or private event if that suits your audience and channel setup.
- Start the encoder and inspect the event preview in Live Control Room before making the event public. Confirm that both moving video and audio are present and in sync.
- Keep the stream-health panel visible. Check for warnings, unstable delivery or quality problems before and during the event.
- Confirm that the encoder reaches the end of the file and that the YouTube event ends as intended. A prerecorded file ending and a live event ending are related but not necessarily the same operation in every encoder.
- Afterward, verify the event in YouTube Studio if you expect an archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish that longer streams will be archived. Keep a separate copy in local or object storage if preservation matters.
YouTube recommends monitoring audio/video quality and checking event availability through the channel and watch page. For copyright and monetization eligibility, use content you have rights to stream and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and channel policies; a successful encoder connection does not establish that the content is permitted.

Troubleshooting

Do-it-yourself costs and trade-offs
The OCI workflow’s cost depends on your tenancy, compute choice, storage, network use and applicable current OCI terms. The published Always Free outbound allowance does not establish that a suitable instance will be available in Mumbai or that it will encode your file adequately. Verify account-specific eligibility and charges in OCI before scheduling a long event. You also need to configure and maintain the VM, encoder and egress route yourself.
