To schedule a 24/7 YouTube livestream from a VPS, create the scheduled event in YouTube Studio, then run a separate playlist-capable encoder on the VPS using that event’s server URL and stream key. Scheduling the event does not play your files or keep the video feed running: FFmpeg or another encoder must continuously send the feed, and you must monitor it.
How the scheduled event and VPS feed fit together
YouTube treats the scheduled broadcast and the incoming video feed as separate parts of a livestream. The scheduled event is the watch page and broadcast; the VPS encoder sends the audio and video. A scheduled event alone will not play files from your server or keep an encoder running. YouTube’s [Live API documentation](https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/live/docs) describes broadcasts and live streams as distinct resources.
This guide uses a Linux VPS and FFmpeg for a headless, playlist-based setup. Exact commands depend on your installed FFmpeg build and the formats of your media; test with representative files rather than assuming one command will handle every playlist.
Schedule the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream.
- Reuse prior settings or create a new scheduled stream. Set the title, description, visibility, and start details for the event.
- In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key for the event. Keep the key private: YouTube treats it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Check the event’s start behavior. Depending on its configuration, you may need to wait for the incoming preview and click Go live in Live Control Room after the encoder connects.
YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete that setup well ahead of the planned start. See [YouTube’s encoder guide](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2907883).

Prepare and run the playlist on your VPS
Install and inspect FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using your Linux distribution’s maintained package or a build documented by the FFmpeg project. Check the installed version and available encoders before choosing options:
ffmpeg -version
Encoder availability varies by build. Consult the [FFmpeg documentation](https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html) for the syntax and limits supported by the version you installed.
Put media on the VPS and decide how it will play
Upload the source files to VPS storage and choose the playback behavior deliberately: file order, whether playback repeats at the end, how new files enter rotation, and what should happen if a file is missing or malformed. FFmpeg documents both input looping and the concat demuxer for reading file lists; those features do not automatically make every playlist resilient to changing files or mixed media.

Inspect the playlist’s codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and container formats. Compatible files may be passed through or remuxed, while mismatched files may need transcoding or normalization. Do not assume that stream copy works for arbitrary media. Follow the installed build’s FFmpeg documentation when assembling the command; input ordering and demuxer flags matter.
Set the output and protect the stream key
Choose an output format and bitrate that match YouTube’s current ingest recommendations and the VPS’s sustained network capacity. Keep the stream key out of public scripts, repositories, logs, and screenshots. Use an appropriately protected configuration or secret-management method, and restrict access to the VPS account and files that contain it.
Keep the process running and supervise it
Run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd so it can start on boot and restart after an encoder exit. A restart policy does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: the process can fail again, the VPS network can drop, and YouTube can report stream-health problems. Add monitoring and check Live Control Room’s health indicator.

Before announcing the stream, test a representative playlist, confirm picture and sound in Live Control Room, and observe the stream-health status. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; consult its [live encoder settings](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702).
Choose YouTube ingest settings and plan bandwidth
YouTube’s encoder settings currently recommend RTMPS where supported. For RTMP/RTMPS, its guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use the recommendations for your selected codec and format rather than treating any single bitrate as universal.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not minimum VPS plan requirements. The server must sustain the selected outbound bitrate continuously, with headroom for protocol overhead, other traffic, interruptions, or additional channels. If FFmpeg transcodes, CPU demand depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, and concurrent streams; remuxing or stream-copying can require a different compute profile. There is no universal VPS size or price established for this workflow. Compare a provider’s sustained bandwidth, transfer limits, CPU, storage, region and network path against your actual setup, then test it before relying on it.

Plan continuity and recordings separately
A VPS process can keep sending media, but it does not by itself schedule, approve, or publish a YouTube event. Connect the encoder before the event, confirm the preview, and start the broadcast as configured. YouTube notes that scheduled streams can be promoted and viewers can receive reminders; the encoder still needs to deliver the feed.
Do not rely on a single multi-day broadcast as your only archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If recordings matter, keep a local archive or plan shorter events and verify the resulting videos in Studio. YouTube recommends a local archive backup, but does not require a particular drive. An external SSD is an optional place to keep creator-side media or recordings; it does not attach to or expand VPS storage.

Only stream media for which you have the necessary rights, including music rights. YouTube’s [livestream terms and conditions](https://www.youtube.com/t/terms?hl=en) state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” Those terms also require the provider to have the necessary rights to exploit live content, including music licensing rights.

A continuous loop is not a guarantee of monetization. In its July 15, 2025 policy update, YouTube clarified and renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content.” The policy applies to live streams and says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the channel monetization policies. Build meaningful editorial originality and variation into the stream, and clear the rights to every included work. No general article can predict the outcome of an individual channel review.
Or let it run in the cloud
