To save future Twitch streams as VODs, open Creator Dashboard → Settings → Stream → VOD Settings and turn on Store past broadcasts. Also enable Always publish VODs if you want completed recordings to appear publicly without manual review. Twitch VODs are temporary, however: current retention is 7, 14, or 60 days depending on account status. For a lasting archive, record locally or download or export important broadcasts before they expire.
First, what does “save a stream” mean?
On Twitch, “saved” can refer to several different things. The distinction matters when troubleshooting: a stream may be stored but unpublished, or you may be looking for a Clip when no full VOD exists.

Twitch’s VOD guide explains how to manage Past Broadcasts, Highlights, and Uploads. Full VODs do not count toward Twitch’s stated storage limit; Highlights and Uploads do. Twitch identifies a 100-hour limit relevant to those Highlights and Uploads, but freeing that space will not restore a VOD that expired or was never recorded.

- Sign in to Twitch and open Creator Dashboard.
- Choose Settings → Stream.
- Scroll to VOD Settings.
- Turn on Store past broadcasts.
- Turn on Always publish VODs if you want completed VODs to be publicly available automatically.
- Review Excluded Categories and remove any category whose VODs you want published automatically.
- Run a short test stream, end it, and check Content → Video Producer.
Twitch says past-broadcast storage is not enabled by default. These controls apply to future broadcasts: switching them on will not recreate a stream Twitch did not store. Dashboard labels or placement may change, so look for the VOD controls under Stream settings if the page looks different. See Twitch’s Creator Dashboard guide and VOD documentation.

Why a completed stream may not appear
- VOD storage was off. If Store past broadcasts was disabled when you streamed, Twitch may not have created a VOD. Enabling it now is a fix for future streams, not a recovery method.
- The VOD exists but is unpublished. When Always publish VODs is off, a stored VOD may need manual publication. Look in Video Producer, not just on your public channel page.
- The category was excluded. Check Excluded Categories even if storage is on; a category exclusion can prevent automatic publication.
- The VOD expired. Twitch deletes past broadcasts according to account-status retention limits. A stream that was available earlier may simply have passed its deadline.
- The VOD was deleted. Twitch says deleted video content cannot be restored. See its copyright and DMCA FAQ.
- Ingest, configuration, or network trouble interfered. Twitch identifies incorrect stream configuration and unstable network conditions as possible reasons a stream may fail to save. They are possibilities, not proof of a single cause.
- You mean a Clip, not a full recording. Clips have separate settings and are only short segments. They cannot substitute for a VOD.
- The VOD exists, but audio is missing. Twitch may mute portions where its system detects copyrighted audio. That is different from the entire VOD failing to save or a copyright strike.
Find a missing Twitch VOD
- Check your channel’s Videos page.
- Open Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.
- Filter for Past Broadcasts and sort or scan by the stream date.
- Look for unpublished videos and open the video’s options menu. Choose Publish if that option is available and you want it public.
- Check whether the stream is still within your retention period and whether its category was excluded.
- If it is absent from Video Producer, confirm that storage was enabled before the stream and check any local recording and streaming-software logs.
If a VOD is missing from Video Producer, Twitch’s public documentation does not offer a guaranteed recovery path. The possibilities include settings, expiration, deletion, or a technical failure; do not assume that changing a setting will bring the old broadcast back.

These are the periods in Twitch’s current VOD documentation and streamer-benefits comparison. Turbo extends the window to 60 days; it does not provide permanent storage. Download, export, or otherwise preserve an important VOD before its deadline.

Download or export a VOD before it expires
Download it to your computer
- Open Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.
- Find the VOD and open its three-dot options menu.
- Choose Download.
- When the download finishes, confirm the file exists and plays locally before relying on it as your only copy.
Twitch’s download workflow handles videos individually. Long downloads may take time to start. If Twitch muted a portion for detected copyrighted audio, downloading the VOD will not restore that audio. Keep at least two verified copies of broadcasts that matter to you; that is a sensible backup practice, not a Twitch requirement.

Connect your accounts through Twitch’s Connections page, then open the VOD in Video Producer and choose Export. Select the connected YouTube account and complete any requested upload details. Verify the result in YouTube Studio. Twitch notes that YouTube accounts must be verified to upload videos longer than 15 minutes. An export provides an external copy, but it is not a local master and does not guarantee identical processing or source quality.

Make a local recording while you stream
A local recording is independent of Twitch’s VOD-retention window, though it still depends on your software, available disk space, and computer performance.
Twitch Studio
Twitch’s local-recording guide gives this workflow: click the arrow beside Start Stream, then choose Record Video. To adjust the destination or format, open File → Settings → Recording and choose the available location and format, such as MP4 or FLV.

OBS and other streaming software
Twitch lists OBS and XSplit among local-recording options, but controls differ by application and version. In OBS, enable recording before going live and consult OBS’s official site for current recording guidance. Make a short test recording and play it back; do not assume that streaming automatically starts local recording.
Before an important broadcast, check available disk space, confirm recording has started, and verify the finished file plays after you stop recording. Streaming and recording at once can add work for your computer, and results depend on its hardware and settings. Keep the original local file until any second copy—such as an external drive or cloud upload—has completed and been checked.

Use Twitch Inspector if the stream itself may have had problems
If VOD settings were correct but a broadcast still failed to appear, Twitch recommends Twitch Inspector. Its broadcast-health guide describes how Inspector shows transfer rates sent by the encoder and received by Twitch’s ingest server.
- Open Inspector and review the affected stream’s transfer-rate graph.
- Look for interruptions or unusually inconsistent delivery.
- Check your streaming software’s output and connection logs.
- If the issue repeats, test a different ingest server or network where practical.
- Identify whether the bottleneck is encoding, upload capacity, or delivery before changing stream complexity.
- Run a short, low-stakes test before the next important broadcast.
Unstable delivery can be relevant to a missing VOD, but an irregular graph alone does not establish why a particular broadcast is absent.
Quick Recap
When only Clips, audio, or a special version is missing
- Clips are unavailable: Check Creator Dashboard → Settings → Stream → Clips Settings and whether clips are enabled. Twitch notes that Clips can be disabled for channels in the DJ Program. If there is no source VOD, there may be no past broadcast from which to make a clip. See Twitch’s Clips settings.
- Audio is muted but the video remains: Twitch’s content-recognition system can mute VOD or Clip portions containing detected copyrighted audio. An audio warning is not itself the same as a DMCA takedown or strike; consult Twitch’s copyright FAQ for the distinction.
- Vertical or 2K version is gone: Twitch documents that a vertical version of a Dual Format or Vertical stream expires after 7 days, while the horizontal version follows the account’s normal retention period. For 2K streams, the 2K version expires after 7 days and a 1080p version is available for the remainder of the applicable period.
- You expected to rewind the live stream: Stream Rewind is separate from archiving. Twitch says eligible Affiliates and Partners need both Store past broadcasts and Always publish VODs enabled; changes apply starting with the next stream. It is unavailable for DJ-category and DJ Program streams. See Twitch’s Stream Rewind guide.
A quick prevention checklist
- ☐ Store past broadcasts is on.
- ☐ Always publish VODs is on if automatic public availability is wanted.
- ☐ Excluded Categories has been reviewed.
- ☐ A test stream appeared in Video Producer.
- ☐ Important VODs are downloaded or exported before retention ends.
- ☐ Local recording is enabled and a test file plays.
- ☐ A second backup is verified for streams you cannot afford to lose.
