You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio station on Linux with OBS, but OBS settings alone cannot guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting. You need a Linux system capable of the planned encode, a stable upload connection and power supply, monitoring and recovery procedures, and music rights that cover live transmission and any archive. Most importantly, YouTube warns that a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a single continuous stream is not a dependable way to create a complete 24-hour video.

What you need before setting up OBS

  • A Linux computer with a supported graphics/display environment. OBS requires OpenGL 3.3 and an X11 or Wayland session; meeting these minimums does not establish that the computer can sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene load. See the OBS system requirements.
  • A reliable wired or wireless internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen video and audio bitrate, plus headroom for normal variation.
  • A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming. Check eligibility before scheduling a launch; YouTube’s live-streaming requirements explain how to get started.
  • Audio and video you are entitled to broadcast, including rights for the territories you serve and any archived version.
  • A plan to keep the Linux session, OBS, network, and power available, as well as a way to notice and respond to failures.

Install OBS from a supported source for your Linux distribution. The OBS installation instructions describe distribution-specific options. No particular computer model or Linux configuration is established as sufficient for every 24/7 station: test the actual machine with the intended production workload.

Build the station in OBS and connect YouTube

  1. Prepare your station content. In OBS, create the scene and sources that will present the station. Configure the audio routing and confirm the program mix includes the intended audio. If you use a visualizer, title card, or other on-screen element, include it in the test because scene complexity contributes to system load.
  2. Choose the encoder starting point. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then review its choices against the quality and upload capacity you actually need. It is a starting point, not proof that the machine or connection can sustain an all-day broadcast. The OBS overview guide covers the interface and setup workflow.
  3. Connect the YouTube ingest. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is available in the service list, or enter the YouTube server URL and stream key supplied for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or public documentation.
  4. Set the video and audio output. Match OBS’s encoder settings to a YouTube-supported mode and to your measured upload capacity. Use the guidance in the next section rather than choosing a bitrate solely because it is a common preset.
  5. Start a test broadcast. For a scheduled YouTube stream, start the OBS encoder and check that video and audio arrive in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Once the preview and stream health are satisfactory, click Go live in YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this flow.

Choose encoder settings and test the full workload

YouTube’s encoder guidance for its standard SDR workflow recommends RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive scan, and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube documents AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every Linux encoder or OBS configuration exposes every option exactly as described. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the target mode you plan to send.

Target mode YouTube figure established here How to use it
720p at 30 fps 2 Mbps recommended video bitrate; 6 Mbps maximum This figure applies to this resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s bitrate table. Use the table for other modes instead of carrying this value over to a different resolution or frame rate.

Choose a mode that your Linux encoder can sustain and your upload connection can carry consistently. A bitrate that fits the connection on paper can still fail in practice if the connection fluctuates or the computer cannot encode continuously. Do not treat YouTube’s maximum as a target for every setup.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Run a private or unlisted endurance test

Before making the station public, test with the same audio, motion, scenes, resolution, and frame rate intended for production. OBS recommends testing before the first public stream; YouTube’s live-streaming tips also advise ongoing quality checks and checking the local archive when recording.

  • Listen for missing, distorted, clipped, or unexpectedly quiet audio.
  • Watch for unstable video, dropped frames, or encoder overload in OBS and check YouTube’s stream health.
  • Leave the test running long enough to expose problems that do not appear in a brief setup check.
  • If recording locally, verify that the recording file exists and continues to grow.

Keep the broadcast running and plan recovery

For an unattended station, keep the Linux session alive, prevent routine sleep or suspend, and arrange for OBS to launch with the station session. Configure OBS’s automatic reconnect behavior for brief network interruptions. Exact launch and power-management steps vary by Linux distribution and desktop environment; the official material does not certify a particular systemd unit, watchdog, restart script, or uptime target for this use.

Automatic reconnect helps with a temporary disconnect, but it does not replace a recovery plan. It cannot by itself ensure the host restarts after a crash, power returns after an outage, or an operator notices that the stream is no longer healthy. Set up out-of-band monitoring and an operator alert path, then test recovery from both a network interruption and a host restart. A UPS may be a practical consideration for power continuity, but no particular model or capacity is established here.

Understand YouTube’s archive and DVR limits

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. That makes a single 24/7 broadcast an unreliable source for a complete YouTube VOD. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams.

If complete recordings matter, record locally and check that the file is growing during the broadcast. You could also choose shorter scheduled blocks that each finish under 12 hours, giving each broadcast its own opportunity to be archived. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a restart interval or guarantee how a particular channel’s segmented broadcasts will appear, so test the workflow you choose.

Clear music rights before going live

YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for having the necessary rights for both live and archived content, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream and trigger a warning; continued use can lead to interruption or termination.

A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says licensed third-party content can still be affected if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm that permissions cover the relevant territories, live transmission, and any VOD or archive use, and coordinate allowlisting where applicable. OBS settings cannot resolve a rights or Content ID issue. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and copyright guidance for live streams.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 station problems

Symptom Likely area to check Practical response
YouTube receives no video or audio OBS stream configuration, server URL, stream key, or encoder state Check Settings > Stream, confirm the current YouTube ingest details, and verify that OBS is actively sending. Keep the key private while checking it.
Video or audio becomes unstable Upload capacity, encoder load, or settings for the selected mode Check OBS and YouTube stream health. Re-test at a lower supported target mode if the computer or connection cannot sustain the current one, and use YouTube’s bitrate table for that mode.
OBS reconnects but the station remains offline Longer network failure, host crash, power loss, or an issue requiring operator action Use monitoring and alerts outside the broadcast computer; test network-loss and restart recovery instead of relying only on automatic reconnect.
A long stream has no complete YouTube archive or limited rewind Broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive/DVR threshold Keep a local recording if the program must be preserved; consider shorter scheduled blocks if separate archives are important.
A stream is replaced, warned, interrupted, or terminated after music plays Content ID match or rights that do not cover the use Review the rights for live and archived use and coordinate channel allowlisting with the rights owner where applicable. Changing OBS encoding settings will not clear the rights issue.
