How to Run OBS 24/7 on a Low-Cost VPS in India for YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes, you can run OBS continuously on a low-cost VPS in India, but a low advertised price does not establish that the server can encode your scene around the clock. OBS on Linux needs a supported display environment and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics; the VPS must also sustain the CPU load, memory use, network route and monthly outbound transfer your stream requires. Treat the setup as a test-before-launch project, not a guaranteed turnkey configuration.

What you need to verify before choosing a VPS

  • Encoding capacity: Software encoding can keep CPU use high. Load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS cautions that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee a system can stream or record successfully (OBS system requirements).
  • Linux graphics and display: OBS lists an X window system or Wayland and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU for Linux/Unix. A bare SSH shell alone does not demonstrate that these requirements are met. The cited requirements do not establish a universal, officially supported headless setup.
  • Transfer allowance: A 24/7 stream sends data continuously. Confirm the allowance for the exact region and instance, how overages are billed, and whether the allowance is outbound-only or subject to other accounting rules.
  • CPU behavior: Check whether CPU is shared or burstable and whether the provider documents sustained performance. A small instance may run OBS briefly yet struggle under a persistent encode.
  • Operations: Plan for remote access, monitoring, restart behavior, alerts, credential protection and a reboot recovery test.

An India region can be convenient for administration or audience proximity, but location alone does not establish a better network path to YouTube ingest. Test the actual region and watch YouTube’s stream-health reporting.

How low-cost India VPS options compare

These are published provider facts observed on 2026-10-03, not proof that either provider’s entry plan can encode a particular OBS scene 24/7. Prices and terms may change; verify the selected region, quota and current billing details before ordering.

Provider Published plan and India-region facts What remains to verify for OBS
Amazon Lightsail The Linux/Unix public IPv4 price table listed bundles from $5 USD/month, including a listed entry bundle with 0.5 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer. AWS says Mumbai-region plans have half the transfer allowance shown on the main table (Lightsail pricing). AWS describes Lightsail CPU as burstable and says workloads needing consistently high CPU, including video encoding, are better suited to EC2 (Lightsail bundles and CPU behavior). The smallest listed bundle is not a demonstrated 24/7 OBS plan.
DigitalOcean Droplets DigitalOcean’s pricing page listed Droplets starting at $4/month, with outbound transfer depending on plan and starting at 500 GiB/month. It lists Ubuntu and Bangalore among its locations (Droplet pricing). The pricing page does not validate an entry plan for continuous OBS encoding. Confirm current Bangalore availability, the selected plan’s quota and overage terms, and sustained performance in a real trial.

Compare the full monthly cost, not just the headline rate: instance charge, applicable taxes or billing terms, transfer overage, storage, and any separately needed remote-access or monitoring services. The sources do not establish an exact affordable size or a winner for uninterrupted OBS encoding.

Choose conservative YouTube stream settings

YouTube says to configure resolution, frame rate and bitrate in the encoder. It recommends RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). It also recommends a speed test and a preflight stream with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast; monitor stream health and messages while live (YouTube live encoder settings).

H.264 target YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 2 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that your VPS has the sustained capacity or route to deliver them reliably. For an initial test, a modest 720p30 H.264 stream is a sensible starting point if it suits the content; move up only after testing the actual scene and server. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and use RTMPS where available.

Budget transfer with care. As a rough unit-based estimate before protocol overhead, a stream at B Mbps sends about B × 10.8 GB per 24-hour day. Provider accounting conventions differ, and actual billed transfer can vary; do not turn this estimate into an exact monthly bill without checking the provider’s rules and any overage price.

Set up OBS on the VPS

  1. Check YouTube channel readiness. Confirm that live streaming is available on the channel and review current Live Control Room broadcast settings before automating. YouTube’s account eligibility and interface can change. OBS’s community YouTube setup guide is old, so do not rely on it as the current authority for YouTube’s UI (OBS community YouTube guide).
  2. Provision an India-region Linux instance if it fits your needs. Before purchase, record the exact plan, region, included outbound transfer, overage policy, CPU sharing or burst limits, restart policy and billing total. A nearby region may help administration latency but does not guarantee better YouTube ingest performance.
  3. Install OBS from a supported source for the selected distribution. Verify the package, display stack (X or Wayland) and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics support on the actual instance. If the setup needs a remote desktop or virtual display session, treat that as a configuration choice to validate on the chosen image; do not assume every VPS supports the same recipe.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and obtain its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service, then connect the account or enter the server and key as appropriate for the setup. Prefer RTMPS where available. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, place it in a world-readable file or paste it into logs.
  5. Configure the output and video. In Settings → Output, choose an encoder the instance can sustain, set rate control to CBR and enter the bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Set keyframe interval to 2 seconds. In Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate to match the intended broadcast. Start conservatively and avoid assuming that software encoding at a higher resolution will work just because the interface permits it.
  6. Run a representative preflight. Include the same audio, movement, overlays and scene transitions planned for the real broadcast. Watch OBS statistics for rendering or encoding lag, dropped frames and resource pressure, and check YouTube’s stream health and messages. Test long enough to expose sustained contention; a longer trial, such as several hours, is a practical recommendation rather than a YouTube or provider standard.
  7. Test recovery before unattended operation. Reboot the instance and verify the display session, OBS process, stream connection and broadcast behavior recover as intended. Only after this test should you configure start-on-boot, process supervision and alerting. There is no provider-specific or OBS-official systemd unit established here; validate any service configuration against your OS and package, and protect credentials.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

A stable server does not make a broadcast eligible for monetization or exempt it from YouTube’s rules. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, including music, footage and images; keep documentation for permissions. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies, including rules that may apply to repetitive or reused material, before building a continuous channel around recorded content. Live availability, copyright status and monetization are separate questions.

Troubleshooting a 24/7 OBS VPS

  • OBS will not open or reports a graphics/display problem: Confirm that the Linux image has the required X or Wayland environment and OpenGL-compatible graphics support. A command-line login by itself does not prove a usable display setup.
  • Encoding lag or dropped frames: Lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate; simplify scenes and filters; then repeat the representative test. If CPU remains saturated, the instance may lack sustained encoding capacity. Do not diagnose a network problem from encoding lag alone.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the encoder bitrate and keyframe interval, then test the route and upload capacity from the selected region. Reduce settings if the route cannot sustain them. YouTube’s recommended bitrate is a target for ingest, not a VPS guarantee.
  • The stream stops after a reboot or disconnect: Verify that the display session and OBS start correctly, that the broadcast is available in Live Control Room, and that process supervision is configured for the actual installed package. Repeat a reboot test rather than assuming an unattended process will recover.
  • The monthly bill or transfer use is higher than expected: Recheck regional transfer allowances, provider measurement conventions and overage pricing. A 24/7 stream consumes transfer continuously; the rough bitrate estimate excludes overhead and billing-specific rules.
  • The VPS looks cheap but fails the long test: Reassess sustained CPU behavior, memory, display support and transfer costs together. A burstable or undersized VM is not necessarily economical if it cannot carry the intended workload reliably.
