How to Run a 24/7 Study With Me Stream from a VPS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a prerecorded “study with me” stream from a Linux VPS by preparing compatible media, sending it to YouTube Live with FFmpeg over RTMPS, and using a service manager to restart FFmpeg if the process fails. This removes the need to leave your personal computer on, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: network, media, VPS, or YouTube interruptions still need attention.

This workflow is for prerecorded video, not a live camera feed or an interactive study session. YouTube’s encoder guidance and RTMPS requirements should guide the final settings. Confirm that live streaming is available for your YouTube account before building the setup.

What the VPS workflow does

A VPS hosts your media and runs FFmpeg as a headless process: it reads a video file or playlist, then publishes a continuous stream to YouTube Live. You do not need a graphical desktop or OBS for this file-based pipeline.

The basic flow is: prepare media on the server, create or configure a YouTube live stream, send the media to its RTMPS ingest address with the stream key, run FFmpeg under a boot-enabled service manager, and monitor stream health in YouTube Studio. A service manager can restart a failed FFmpeg process; it cannot fix invalid media, a bad key, loss of connectivity, a VPS outage, or a YouTube-side interruption.

Choose media handling: copy compatible files or transcode

Stream-copying

If your source files already use codecs and settings accepted by your chosen delivery configuration, FFmpeg can copy the audio and video streams rather than encode them again. This avoids the CPU cost and generation loss associated with live re-encoding. It does not make incompatible sources compatible, and files with differing properties may need to be normalized first for a reliable sequence.

Transcoding or normalizing

Transcode when you need to change resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, or audio format, or when your clips need consistent output settings. You can normalize clips before the continuous stream starts, reducing work during playback; alternatively, FFmpeg can encode as it streams. CPU demand depends on the actual source, filters, resolution, and encoder settings. Benchmark the exact workload on the VPS plan you intend to use rather than assuming a particular CPU or memory requirement.

FFmpeg supports file and network inputs, filtering, transcoding, stream selection, stream copying, and network outputs. Its options generally apply to the next input or output, so option placement matters; check the manual for your installed version: FFmpeg documentation.

Prepare the VPS and YouTube stream

  1. Check account eligibility. In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel. Account eligibility and activation requirements can vary; the cited encoder guidance does not establish the status of an individual account.
  2. Prepare the files. Put the video and audio files on the VPS, or transfer them there. Confirm that each clip plays, has the intended audio, and uses a format compatible with your planned output. Test representative footage, including motion and audio, rather than relying only on a static scene.
  3. Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. Use the current stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube’s live control room. Labels and screen layout can change, so use the current values shown for that stream rather than a URL copied from an old setup.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a repository, paste it into a public script, or include it in screenshots. Store it in a restricted configuration or environment file on the VPS and limit who can read it.
  5. Use RTMPS. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS. The endpoint, application path, port 443, hostname, and TLS server-name handling must match the ingest instructions. Follow Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide and the exact URL supplied in YouTube Studio.

Set YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video. RTMP and RTMPS are listed ingest protocols; RTMPS is the encrypted option. Set resolution and frame rate to match the stream and the media you are sending. The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not measured performance guarantees or general internet-speed requirements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p, 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 17 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube Help’s encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026. Other codecs have different bitrate recommendations. Your VPS needs stable outbound capacity for the configured video and audio bitrates plus network overhead; a brief speed test does not establish sustained capacity. Check the provider’s outbound bandwidth and traffic limits, and confirm that the server can maintain the required upload to the chosen ingest endpoint.

Build the FFmpeg publishing command

FFmpeg command details depend on the installed version, source format, and whether you are copying or encoding. A minimal stream-copy pattern for a single compatible file is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/study.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_HOST:443/APP/STREAM_KEY"

Replace the example path and endpoint components with your actual values. Use the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube; do not leave them in a script that other users can read. The `-re` option reads file input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. `-stream_loop -1` repeats the input indefinitely. This example copies both streams and therefore is appropriate only when the file’s codecs and characteristics are accepted by the delivery path. The output muxer shown is commonly used for RTMP-family ingest; validate it against the current YouTube settings and FFmpeg build.

If you need to encode rather than copy, a starting pattern is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/study.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_HOST:443/APP/STREAM_KEY"

This is an illustrative 720p/30 fps H.264-oriented pattern, not a universal command: it assumes suitable source dimensions and uses a two-second GOP at 30 fps. For 1080p/30 fps, use YouTube’s 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation as a video-bitrate target; for other resolutions, frame rates, codecs, or audio requirements, adjust settings to match the current YouTube encoder table. If resizing is needed, add an appropriate scale filter and verify the resulting aspect ratio. Confirm actual output with FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream-health display before relying on it.

For a sequence of clips, make their codec, resolution, frame rate, audio presence, and audio format consistent before looping them. FFmpeg’s concat methods have specific input requirements; consult the FFmpeg manual for the installed version and test the intended playlist end to end. A public example of continuous playback with a systemd service is available at GitHub; treat it as one implementation, not a guarantee or a universal template.

Keep FFmpeg running with a service manager

Run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd rather than an interactive SSH session. Configure the service to start at boot and restart when its process exits, then enable it and inspect its logs. Exact unit-file syntax and behavior depend on the operating system and systemd release, so check the documentation for the VPS image you use: systemd.service documentation.

A restart policy is process recovery, not full stream recovery. If FFmpeg repeatedly exits because the file is missing, the stream key is invalid, or the connection is unavailable, automatic restarts may simply repeat the failure. Protect the unit file and key, verify that media paths are readable by the service account, and review service logs after startup or a restart.

Test and monitor the stream

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test. Before promoting the stream, use a test setup appropriate to your channel and confirm that YouTube receives a signal.
  2. Check picture and sound. Watch representative motion, listen for audio, and verify that the loop or playlist transitions as intended.
  3. Read stream-health messages. Keep YouTube Studio’s live control room open during setup. Resolve warnings about bitrate, keyframes, resolution, frame rate, or missing audio before treating the configuration as ready.
  4. Check both sides after interruptions. If the stream drops, inspect YouTube’s status and the VPS service logs. Confirm whether FFmpeg exited, the network failed, the media ended unexpectedly, or the platform stopped ingesting.

Neither FFmpeg nor a VPS can guarantee that viewers will see an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Platform availability, account status, host maintenance, network quality, media integrity, and process configuration all affect continuity.

What to check when the stream fails

  • YouTube receives no signal: verify the RTMPS hostname, port 443, application path, stream key, and TLS/SNI behavior against the current YouTube ingest URL. Check VPS outbound connectivity and FFmpeg’s error log.
  • FFmpeg exits as soon as the service starts: confirm the media path exists, the service user can read it, the command works interactively with the same environment, and the installed FFmpeg build supports the requested codecs and options.
  • Video plays but audio is absent: inspect the source streams with FFmpeg, confirm the input actually has audio, and ensure the selected audio stream is included and encoded or copied in a compatible format.
  • YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate: compare the output to the recommended bitrate for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check sustained VPS outbound capacity and network overhead rather than relying on a short peak-speed figure.
  • Keyframe or encoder warnings appear: use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum. Confirm the actual encoder output, not just the values in a script.
  • The service restarts repeatedly: use the service manager’s status and journal logs to identify the exit reason. Fix the underlying input, credentials, permissions, or connection problem; a restart loop does not solve it.
  • The stream stops despite a healthy FFmpeg process: check the YouTube live control room and any account or platform notices. The process being alive does not prove that YouTube is distributing the stream to viewers.

Estimate the real VPS requirements and cost

The evidence here does not establish a minimum CPU, RAM, server price, or provider performance level. If you stream-copy compatible files, the encoder workload is different from live transcoding; filters, overlays, resizing, resolution, and frame rate can increase CPU use. Test the exact command on the intended plan and watch CPU use, dropped frames, memory, and network stability.

Compare VPS plans on sustained outbound capacity, monthly transfer allowance, CPU performance for your intended encoder, storage, support, server location relative to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, and available restart or backup options. Also account for the time needed to maintain Linux, secure the stream key, monitor logs, and troubleshoot failures. No particular host or current price is established here, so choose from current provider specifications and your own workload test rather than an assumed universal requirement.

Or let it run in the cloud
