You can send video from an Ubuntu 24.04 machine to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but keeping a stream available around the clock takes more than a command: You need an eligible channel, a working FFmpeg build, a stable host and connection, and a plan to detect failures. This guide shows the setup and a representative file-to-YouTube command, then explains what it does—and does not—guarantee.
What “always-on” means with FFmpeg and YouTube
FFmpeg can send a media input to YouTube Live, while the Ubuntu host supplies the processing and network connection. If the host stops, loses connectivity, or FFmpeg exits, the feed can be interrupted. Restarting FFmpeg may restore transmission, but does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the same event or watch page live.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not establish that one event can run indefinitely. Plan for event limits and interruptions rather than treating a single encoder process as a permanent broadcast.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect your stream key
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions within the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, create a stream or select the scheduled event you intend to use. Copy its server/stream URL and stream key from the encoder settings.
- Treat the key like a password. Anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Avoid pasting a real key into a shell command that could be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings. If it is compromised, reset it in the stream settings.
- Start the encoder and check the event state. YouTube says starting the encoder creates the watch page. For scheduled streams, wait for the preview and use the Live Control Room’s go-live control when appropriate.
Check the FFmpeg build installed on Ubuntu
Do not assume every Ubuntu 24.04 FFmpeg build has the same encoders or protocols. Before choosing a command, inspect the installed build and confirm that it provides the encoder and RTMP or RTMPS support you plan to use:

ffmpeg -encodersCheck the output for your selected video encoder and the required network protocol. The available build may differ, so do not assume that libx264, RTMPS, or a particular hardware encoder is present by default. If a needed component is absent, use a suitable build or an encoder the installation does provide, and verify the package-specific setup before deployment. FFmpeg’s online documentation describes its newest revision; for older installed versions, consult documentation matching that version.
Send a local video file to YouTube Live
FFmpeg’s documented real-time RTMP pattern is to read an input with -re, then send FLV output to the server. The example below adds an illustrative H.264/AAC configuration; those encoding flags are not a tested Ubuntu 24.04 preset or a universal YouTube configuration.

input.mp4with your source file. - Replace the sample destination with the exact ingest URL and stream key provided for your event. Do not send the placeholder URL literally.
- Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder and protocol before running the command.
- Match the output settings to the event and YouTube’s current recommendations. At 30 fps,
-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, or a two-second keyframe interval. Choose a corresponding GOP for other frame rates.
The -re option reads a file at its normal playback rate instead of sending it as fast as possible. A live camera, capture device, or network source has different input syntax and failure modes; this file example is not a ready-made command for those sources.
The command above sends one input; it is not, by itself, a verified infinite-loop recipe. If you need a file to repeat, check the loop option’s exact syntax in the installed version’s ffmpeg -h full output or matching manual before deployment. Confirm that playback actually repeats as intended and test the full event path before relying on it unattended.

Choose YouTube-compatible video, audio, and network settings
YouTube’s published guidance for typical SDR streams over RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Use the current YouTube settings table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating the example command’s bitrate as universal.
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s current recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps. That figure is specific to that codec and video mode; do not apply it to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection to its servers, but verify that your FFmpeg build and the event’s endpoint support the secure protocol before using it. These settings cover ordinary SDR guidance, not the separate requirements for HDR or HLS.

- Use a stable outbound connection and leave capacity beyond the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% extra upload capacity; this is headroom guidance, not a guarantee against congestion or outages.
- Test with representative movement and audio, since static or silent tests may not reveal problems that occur in the real program.
- Use YouTube’s current resolution- and codec-specific bitrate table when setting a target. YouTube’s encoder settings page says: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- A wired Ethernet connection may be useful for a local host where practical, but it is not a YouTube requirement and cannot make an undersized internet service faster.
Test the feed and watch for failures
- Start with a representative test, including the expected motion and audio.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview before going live; confirm that video and sound arrive as expected.
- During the event, monitor YouTube’s stream health and the picture and audio at the destination, not just the FFmpeg process on Ubuntu.
- For an unattended setup, decide how an operator will notice an interruption. FFmpeg logs, supervisor status, and checks of the actual YouTube watch page are useful operational signals, but they do not guarantee continuity.
YouTube warns: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A backup encoder may reduce some equipment-failure risks, but it adds another stream’s network load and needs a tested failover plan. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover for events.
Keep the Ubuntu process running—and understand recovery limits
A reliable always-on setup has to account for the machine, power, internet connection, FFmpeg process, and the YouTube event. A process supervisor can help restart a process that exits, but a restart policy alone does not prove that the YouTube event remains live, that it returns to the same watch page, or that repeated failures will be noticed.

Before putting a stream into unattended use, test the exact installed FFmpeg command and the host’s recovery behavior. Keep logs accessible, make sure someone can see repeated failures, and test any failover arrangement under realistic conditions. No round-the-clock run or particular Ubuntu service configuration is established here, so treat process supervision as an operational choice to validate on your own host—not a guarantee of an uninterrupted broadcast.
