The PC, encoder, power, and network must remain available; YouTube does not make a locally encoded stream independent of your computer. For a stream longer than 12 hours, also make a local recording if preserving the full programme matters: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be archived.
Before you set up the PC, check YouTube live eligibility
Confirm that the channel can stream before troubleshooting encoder or Windows settings. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Its general eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for streaming. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Create the stream and connect an encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as a stream’s password and address. If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in the stream settings before continuing. See Manage live stream settings.
- Open OBS or another encoder on Windows. Choose YouTube or RTMPS if the encoder offers it; otherwise enter the server URL and stream key in its streaming settings. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted form of RTMP; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Set the encoder’s video and audio sources, output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Use the bitrate recommendations below as a starting point, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them.
- Start streaming from the encoder. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, check the picture, sound, and stream-health messages, then start or confirm the live broadcast in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream quality; see its computer live-streaming tips.
Choose resolution and bitrate for the connection you have
Measure upload speed at the location and on the network the PC will use. YouTube recommends that upload capacity exceed the total stream bitrate by 20%; other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce what remains for the encoder. A speed-test result is a snapshot, so leave headroom rather than setting the video bitrate close to the measured maximum. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not India-specific connection targets.

The capacity column applies YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation to the listed video bitrate; audio and other stream overhead also use bandwidth, so allow additional margin. If upload capacity fluctuates or the network is shared, step down to a lower resolution or bitrate and check stream health again. YouTube’s current encoder guidance includes a 2-second keyframe interval (not more than 4 seconds) and constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS. Confirm the matching options in your encoder using YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Keep a local Windows stream running reliably
With this method, the encoder runs on the Windows PC throughout the broadcast. If the computer sleeps, loses power, closes the encoder, or loses its network connection, YouTube may stop receiving the stream. The official guidance cited here does not establish a current Windows menu path for preventing sleep or a specific power, ISP, or UPS recommendation for India, so check your Windows version’s power controls and your own service arrangements rather than relying on a universal setting.
- Use the measured upload capacity of the actual streaming connection and leave headroom; activity on a shared network can reduce available bandwidth.
- Watch Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages after starting, and keep an eye on audio and video during the broadcast.
- If you have a backup encoder, test switching to it before depending on it during a real interruption. YouTube’s streaming tips discuss network conditions and stream health: Streaming tips.
- For a continuous programme that must survive a local PC or network interruption, this setup alone does not provide a guarantee of recovery. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise automatic recovery from Windows sleep, power loss, or a local ISP failure.
Plan the stream around replay and DVR limits
A broadcast staying live and a complete replay being preserved are different outcomes. YouTube warns that a live stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local backup recording. If a complete archive is important, record locally and plan deliberate sessions under 12 hours rather than relying on a single longer broadcast. Read YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube notes that limits may be lower on some devices and older app versions. A viewer’s ability to rewind during a broadcast is therefore not a substitute for a local recording or a preserved archive. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
