How to Keep a YouTube 24/7 Stream in 1080p With Mixed-Resolution Videos

Set OBS’s scaled output to 1920×1080, fit mixed-resolution clips to the canvas, choose the right loop source, and test YouTube’s encoder settings before running a 24/7 stream.

In OBS, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. For a standard 16:9 scene, set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the same size, fit each clip to the canvas, and enable looping on the media source or playlist. This keeps the encoder’s outgoing feed at 1080p even when individual clips have different resolutions. It does not make lower-resolution clips native 1080p, guarantee that viewers receive 1080p, or by itself ensure an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.

What 1080p means when your videos have different resolutions

The output resolution is the size of the live video OBS sends to YouTube. The base canvas is the workspace where you position sources. Set both to 1920×1080 for a straightforward 16:9 scene; a 720p clip can then be scaled into that 1080p output, while a 1080p clip can be displayed at its full source resolution.

Scaling does not add detail that was not present in a lower-resolution file. Also, a 1080p encoder feed does not force every viewer to watch at 1080p: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, and playback quality can vary by device and connection. YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains that transcoding behavior.

Set up OBS for a 1080p stream

1. Set the canvas and output resolution

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Video.
  2. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 1920×1080. This is the frame on which you arrange sources.
  3. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. This is the resolution sent as stream output.
  4. Choose a frame rate suited to the material and the computer’s available resources. If most clips are 30 fps, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point. YouTube supports encoder frame rates up to 60 fps, but higher frame rates can require more resources; test before relying on a 60 fps setup.

If you later change the base canvas, check source positions and sizes again. OBS notes that sources may need to be realigned or resized after a canvas change. See the OBS Studio overview for the distinction between canvas and scaled output.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Fit each clip without distorting it

Add the video files as media sources, or use a VLC Video source for a playlist. Select a source in the preview and choose Transform → Fit to Screen (Ctrl+F). Fit preserves the clip’s aspect ratio and scales it inside the canvas. A 4:3 or vertical clip may therefore leave empty areas around the image in a 16:9 scene.

If you need the image to fill every pixel, cropping can remove parts of the frame; stretching fills the canvas but can distort the picture. Check representative clips of each shape—such as 16:9, 4:3, and vertical—in the OBS preview before going live. OBS documents the fit and stretch transforms in its overview guide.

3. Choose the right loop source

Use case OBS source Repeat setting Dependency
One video file Media Source Enable Loop Built into OBS
Several files in sequence VLC Video Enable Loop Playlist; OBS lists it as on by default VLC must be installed

For a playlist, arrange the files in the VLC Video source and verify playback and transitions in the scene. OBS lists common supported local video formats and the VLC dependency on its Media Sources page.

Output frame rate Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

For the documented ingestion options, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds between keyframes), RTMP or RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure version of RTMP. Use the row that matches your chosen frame rate, and confirm the current guidance at YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Connect OBS to the YouTube live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and locate its stream key and stream URL in the live settings. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key using the option shown in your OBS version.
  3. Confirm that OBS is sending the intended 1920×1080 output and that your selected bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format match the encoder setup.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test before the public broadcast. Include representative movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health messages before relying on the configuration.
  5. Start the stream in OBS and verify the incoming feed in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream keys, stream URL, latency, and DVR controls.

What these settings can—and cannot—guarantee

Loop settings repeat local media; resolution settings define the encoder output. Neither guarantees uninterrupted operation for 24 hours a day. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health, but its encoder guidance and OBS’s loop documentation do not guarantee continuous operation on a particular computer or internet connection.

For a sustained broadcast, test the complete setup under the conditions in which it will run and monitor YouTube’s stream health while live. Make sure the chosen host and connection can maintain the selected bitrate and frame rate. Treat recovery from a host, network, or ingest interruption as a separate operational concern rather than assuming that a loop setting will restore the live stream.

Troubleshoot common mixed-resolution and looping problems

  • The stream is not being sent at 1080p: Recheck Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution. The base canvas alone does not set the stream output resolution.
  • A clip has bars or empty space: That is expected when fitting a source with a different aspect ratio into a 16:9 frame. Keep fit to preserve the image shape, or decide whether cropping or stretching is acceptable for that clip.
  • The image looks distorted: Check that the source was fitted rather than stretched. Stretch fills the frame by changing the image’s proportions.
  • A playlist does not appear or play: Confirm VLC is installed, then check the VLC Video source and its file list. For a single file, use a Media Source and enable Loop instead.
  • The broadcast stutters or YouTube reports poor stream health: Check that the encoder bitrate and frame rate match the selected 1080p30 or 1080p60 setup, then test again with representative audio and movement. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain it.
  • Some viewers do not see 1080p: The encoder’s 1080p output and YouTube’s viewer renditions are different layers. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream, and viewers may receive another quality based on their device or connection.
  • The stream stops despite media continuing to loop: A looping source does not establish that the host, network, or YouTube ingest stayed connected. Check OBS and YouTube Studio stream health and the host and connection rather than changing clip resolution alone.
