You can turn prerecorded files into a continuous YouTube Live feed with FFmpeg and an NVIDIA GPU that supports NVENC. FFmpeg handles the playlist, encoding settings and connection to YouTube; NVENC is the GPU’s dedicated video-encoding hardware. The encoder alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: you also need a tested file sequence, reliable upload capacity, and a plan for monitoring and recovering the process.

What you need—and what each part does

  • Video files: the recordings you want to play in sequence or loop.
  • FFmpeg: the media pipeline that reads the files, prepares video and audio, and sends the stream to YouTube.
  • An NVIDIA GPU with the required NVENC support: NVENC is dedicated video-encoding hardware, distinct from CUDA cores. Support for H.264, HEVC or AV1 depends on the exact GPU, so check NVIDIA’s current GPU support matrix rather than assuming every NVIDIA card supports every codec.
  • A YouTube stream key and a stable connection: the key identifies the ingest stream; the sustained upload connection must carry the chosen video and audio bitrate.

NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guide, dated 24 July 2019, shows FFmpeg using the H.264 NVENC encoder as h264_nvenc and describes optional CUDA-based decoding. NVIDIA’s Video Codec SDK page showed version 13.1 on 3 October 2026; consult the current SDK documentation and your GPU’s compatibility listing for current format support.

Check the files and choose an output

Inventory the playlist

Before configuring a long run, record each file’s resolution, frame rate, video codec, pixel format and audio streams. Confirm whether all clips have audio and whether their levels and formats are consistent enough for your intended feed. Decide whether to preserve the source resolution and frame rate or scale and convert to a common output.

Mixed files can expose problems at transitions: gaps, timestamp discontinuities, audio dropouts or unexpected changes in aspect ratio. Do not assume that a playlist will transition seamlessly just because each clip plays on its own. Test the actual files with the FFmpeg build and playlist arrangement you plan to run.

Match the codec to both the GPU and YouTube

YouTube’s live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as ingest codecs, but your NVIDIA GPU must support NVENC encoding for the chosen codec. The files and FFmpeg build also affect whether hardware decoding is available. H.264 is a practical example below because NVIDIA documents FFmpeg’s h264_nvenc encoder; it is not a claim that every GPU supports every codec or that H.264 is best for every channel.

For ordinary SDR output, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit settings. HDR has different requirements; consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings before configuring an HDR feed.

Set YouTube-compatible video and audio settings

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Its guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), allows frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a four-second maximum. The figures below are YouTube’s listed H.264 ingest minimums and recommendations as accessed on 3 October 2026; the live Help page does not display a publication date.

Output format YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are platform guidance, not a guarantee of quality or delivery. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, leaving room for audio and normal network variation. Source motion, resolution, frame rate and codec all affect the useful choice; test the actual stream and watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback rather than treating a listed bitrate as a promise.

Audio

YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced-settings guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, AAC is required; YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps as recommended. Check the entire playlist: one clip with a different channel layout, sample rate or missing audio can change what viewers hear when it plays.

Configure FFmpeg and start the feed

There is no single playlist command that guarantees gapless looping for every container, codec, FFmpeg build and file combination. Use the following as a configuration checklist, not as a universal ready-to-run command:

  1. Install a compatible FFmpeg build and NVIDIA driver. Confirm that the build exposes the NVENC encoder you intend to use and that your exact GPU supports it. For an H.264 example, check for h264_nvenc. FFmpeg’s available encoders and options vary by build and version.
  2. Prepare the file sequence. Choose an input arrangement that advances through the intended recordings and returns to the beginning if the feed should repeat. Validate how it handles file boundaries, timestamps, audio and any clips with different properties. The cited documentation does not establish one playlist recipe that works gaplessly for all files.
  3. Set the output to match YouTube. Configure RTMPS, the chosen supported codec, the intended resolution and frame rate, CBR, and keyframes every two seconds (never more than four seconds). Set the video bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations and your sustained uplink in mind. Configure audio to match the whole playlist and the intended stereo or 5.1 output.
  4. Use NVENC for encoding. NVIDIA’s documented H.264 example uses -c:v h264_nvenc. NVENC encoding does not require every decode or filter step to run on the GPU. If the input codec and software build support it, NVIDIA documents -hwaccel cuda -hwaccel_output_format cuda as an optional hardware-decoding path that can keep decoded frames on the GPU and reduce unnecessary transfers through system memory. Test filters and decoding on the actual files.
  5. Connect to YouTube using the stream key. In YouTube’s live setup, copy the stream key for the intended stream into the encoder’s destination configuration and keep it private. Select RTMPS where your FFmpeg output workflow supports it. YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream from the viewer-facing broadcast; follow the channel’s live setup so the incoming feed is associated with the intended broadcast.
  6. Test before unattended operation. Run a representative section with movement and audio similar to the real playlist. Check that YouTube receives the feed, the stream health is acceptable, audio plays, motion looks right, and transitions behave as intended. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before a live stream.

Plan for continuous playback and recovery

Playlist continuity and process uptime are separate problems. The playlist must keep supplying valid media; the FFmpeg process must remain running; the computer must stay powered; the files and network must remain available; and the encoder must reconnect or be restarted if a component fails.

YouTube’s API models the incoming liveStream separately from the viewer-facing liveBroadcast. Its documentation gives a 24/7 channel feed alongside a separate interview broadcast as an example. This is useful when planning a channel or API workflow, but a basic encoder user does not need to adopt YouTube’s API just to send one continuous feed. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. For GPU-side diagnostics, NVIDIA’s 2019 FFmpeg guide documents nvidia-smi dmon and nvidia-smi -q -d UTILIZATION. These can help inspect GPU utilization; they do not tell you whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. A watchdog or operating-system service may help restart a failed process, but its configuration is specific to the operating system and deployment. Test recovery, power-loss behavior and reconnection rather than assuming a process supervisor ensures 24/7 delivery.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

  • FFmpeg reports that the encoder is unavailable: the installed build may not include NVENC support, the driver may be incompatible, or the GPU may not support the selected codec. Check the build’s available encoders, update or correct the driver/build as appropriate, and verify the exact GPU against NVIDIA’s support matrix.
  • YouTube does not accept the incoming feed: check that the stream key belongs to the intended live setup, the destination uses the intended ingest protocol, and codec, frame rate and other output settings match YouTube’s current guidance. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages for the specific reported issue.
  • Stream health reports bitrate or connection problems: compare the configured output with the actual sustained upload capacity. Lower the bitrate or output resolution/frame rate if the connection cannot carry the stream reliably, then test again. A speed result taken once does not establish that the connection will hold continuously.
  • There is a pause, timestamp jump or audio change between clips: inspect the files at the transition and test the playlist with the actual FFmpeg build. Normalize or convert mismatched media if needed; there is no universal gapless-loop guarantee across all file combinations.
  • The GPU appears idle or heavily loaded: check whether FFmpeg is actually using the intended encoder and whether decoding or filters are running elsewhere. NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi commands help investigate GPU utilization but cannot diagnose YouTube ingest health by themselves.
  • The feed stops after a machine or network interruption: distinguish a media/playlist failure from an FFmpeg exit, loss of power, unavailable files or network failure. Test the specific restart and reconnect behavior of your operating system and encoder setup; no universal watchdog configuration or 24/7 uptime guarantee is established here.

Or let it run in the cloud
