You can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch a YouTube Live encoder at a chosen time, when you sign in, or after a restart—but Task Scheduler only starts the program. YouTube Studio creates the live event and provides its stream key; the encoder plays and sends your playlist. Keeping a stream live around the clock still depends on Windows, the encoder, your playlist source and your internet connection continuing to work.
What you need before scheduling a stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- An encoder that can play or receive your playlist and send it to YouTube. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoder categories; playlist setup and automation vary by product.
- A Windows PC that can remain powered on and connected for the intended schedule, plus the playlist files or source.
- A stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat it like a password: do not include it in a publicly shared script, screenshot or log.
There is no universal Windows command for starting every encoder with a playlist. Use the chosen encoder’s current documentation for its playlist controls and launch options.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s connection settings into the encoder. Keep the key confidential. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- In the encoder, choose the intended playlist or sequence and configure whether it should loop. Confirm the software can keep playing the source for the full scheduled run.
- Select RTMPS if the encoder supports it. YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection.
- Set output options that the encoder supports and your upload connection can sustain. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for current guidance.
Set the encoder to start with Task Scheduler
Task Scheduler runs a selected program when its trigger conditions are met; it does not play the playlist or connect to YouTube by itself. Microsoft documents time-based, boot and logon triggers in its Task Scheduler triggers reference. Labels can differ across Windows versions.
- Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose Create Task (or the equivalent task-creation option in your version).
- On the General tab, give the task a recognizable name, such as “YouTube playlist stream.” Choose the account and permissions the encoder requires.
- On Triggers, select New and choose when it should run: a one-time or recurring time, at system startup, or when a specified user logs on. A logon trigger waits until that user signs in; it is often the safer choice for an encoder that needs an interactive desktop.
- On Actions, select New and set the action to start the encoder executable. If the encoder requires arguments or a script, use its documented syntax. Keep credentials and stream keys out of any script that others can access.
- Set any needed startup delay if Windows needs time to connect to the network or mount playlist storage. The right delay depends on the PC and network, so verify it on the actual machine.
- Review the task’s conditions and settings for power, network and restart behavior. Do not assume a sleeping computer will wake reliably: Task Scheduler has a WakeToRun setting, but actual behavior also depends on Windows, firmware and power configuration.
- Save the task, then use its Run action to test the launch. Confirm the encoder opens, loads the correct playlist and establishes the YouTube connection.
Choose a trigger that matches the job

| At startup | You want a launch after Windows boots. | An encoder that needs a desktop may not behave as expected before a user signs in; test the exact configuration. |
| At user logon | The encoder needs an interactive session or desktop access. | The task does not launch until the specified user logs on. |
For a 24/7 playlist, the trigger is only the starting point. A scheduled task does not restart a failed stream automatically unless you separately configure and verify recovery behavior in the encoder or script.

Test and monitor before relying on the schedule
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting at least 15 minutes early. In Live Control Room, check the preview before starting, monitor stream health and audio/video quality, and verify the public watch page. If the encoder records a local archive, check that it is growing as expected. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will run unattended.
- Test the actual playlist, including transitions, audio levels and the intended loop or sequence.
- Check the upload connection under representative video movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing available upload bitrate rather than assuming the connection’s advertised speed is sustained.
- Verify the scheduled task after a sign-out, restart or power-state change if those situations matter to your schedule.
- Check the stream’s health and watch page after launch, then supervise it as appropriate for the event.
Understand 24/7 and archive limitations
A continuous run relies on the PC staying on, Windows keeping the task and encoder healthy, the playlist source remaining available, and the network maintaining its upload connection. Task Scheduler is not a 24/7 uptime service.

Microsoft’s Task Scheduler settings reference says a task is stopped 72 hours after it starts by default unless its ExecutionTimeLimit is changed. Check this if the task itself remains running for days; do not assume the encoder process is exempt. See Microsoft’s TaskSettings reference.
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on one automatically generated archive for a stream longer than that; plan recording and archive needs separately using YouTube’s current guidance. A UPS may help with a brief power interruption, but it will not fix an internet outage, Windows failure or encoder fault.

Troubleshooting scheduled YouTube playlist streams
