To run a YouTube Live giveaway, publish clear rules before announcing it, keep entry free, tell viewers exactly how and when to enter, then select and contact a winner using the method your rules promise. YouTube does not document a built-in giveaway picker; the creator is responsible for the contest, applicable laws, and awarding the prize.
1. Write the rules before you announce the giveaway
Settle the important details first, then make the rules easy for viewers to find before entries open. YouTube requires creators to administer the contest and award prizes according to their rules. Its contest policy also says, “You’re solely responsible for your contest.”
- Who can enter: State eligibility requirements, such as age, location, and any exclusions. Make sure they fit the laws that apply where you run the contest.
- When to enter: Give the opening and closing time, including the time zone.
- What counts as an entry: Specify the exact action and whether each eligible person may enter once or more than once.
- The prize: Describe it clearly, including any material restrictions or delivery limits.
- How you will choose and contact the winner: Explain the selection method, the contact route, how long the winner has to respond, and what happens if they do not.
- How the prize will be delivered: Explain the fulfillment method and any information you will need from the winner.
- Privacy and disclosures: Explain what entrant information you collect, why you need it, how you will use it, and any required legal disclosures.
- Platform terms: Link to YouTube’s contest policies, state that entries must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines, and explain that noncompliant entries may be disqualified. Include the required statement that YouTube is not the sponsor and is released from contest-related liability.
YouTube’s policy requires compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, and warns that lottery laws may apply. Requirements depend on the organizer’s location and contest details; YouTube says its policy page is informational, not legal advice. If you are unsure whether your planned rules comply, get advice for your jurisdiction before launch.
2. Keep entry free and separate from channel engagement
YouTube states: “Your contest must be free of charge to enter (don’t forget to check your local lottery laws!).” Do not require a purchase, Super Chat, gift, or other payment to enter. Do not make entry conditions that are designed to inflate views, likes, dislikes, or subscriber counts. A viewer may choose to support your channel separately, but that must not buy them an entry or improve their odds.

3. Choose a clear way to accept entries
Use Live Chat for a simple giveaway
For a small, straightforward contest, you can ask eligible viewers to post one exact, short phrase in Live Chat during a defined entry window. This is a practical format, not a method mandated by YouTube. Put the rules somewhere viewers can read them, and repeat the closing time and entry phrase aloud and on screen if useful.
YouTube Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. YouTube currently lists a limit of up to 11 messages every 30 seconds and up to 200 characters per message. Special characters, URLs, and HTML tags are not allowed in chat, so keep the prompt plain and short. These are platform limits, not recommended entry volumes. In subscriber-only chat, some viewers may not have access to all chat features; chat presentation and moderation can also affect visibility. Do not promise that every viewer will see every entry in the same way.

Use an external form only if the rules explain it
A form can make it easier to collect the specific details needed to check eligibility, especially when chat is busy. If you use one, explain where the form is, what information is required, how it will be used, and when entries close. Collect only what is needed to administer the giveaway, and account for privacy laws that apply to your data practices. Avoid asking viewers to post sensitive personal information in public chat.
Do not treat a poll as an entry list or winner picker
YouTube Live polls are for voting. They support two to four options, can run for up to 24 hours, and do not appear in chat replays. YouTube’s documentation does not describe polls as a giveaway entry list or random draw. A poll should not be presented as the official picker unless your published rules and a complete eligible-entry process actually support that claim.

4. Close entries and select the winner as promised
- Close the window at the stated time. Say that entries are closed so viewers know the cutoff has passed.
- Apply the published eligibility rules. Keep a record sufficient to determine which entries qualify. If chat volume or presentation means you cannot reliably identify eligible entries, use a process that can do so rather than claiming the chat is a complete record.
- Use the selection method in your rules. Do not switch methods after entries close. YouTube’s policy makes the creator responsible for honoring the rules; it does not endorse a particular picker, randomizer, or audit procedure.
- Announce the result clearly. Identify the selected entrant in a way consistent with your privacy notice and tell them how you will contact them.
- Contact the winner through the stated route. Request only information needed to verify eligibility and deliver the prize. If the winner does not respond in time, follow the alternate procedure stated in your rules.
- Deliver the prize and keep appropriate records. Retain only information you need for contest administration and legal obligations, according to your stated privacy terms.
5. Keep the stream setup separate from the giveaway process
YouTube documents mobile, webcam, and encoder streams as ways to go live. You do not need a particular camera, microphone, or encoder just to run a giveaway. The essential operational pieces are the published rules, an entry method you can administer, and a way to announce and contact the winner.
YouTube Giving and Virtual Items are separate features, not giveaway-entry mechanisms. A donation or virtual item should not be required for entry.
