You can loop prerecorded fireplace footage to YouTube Live from a VPS with FFmpeg: enable live streaming on your channel, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then send a real-time loop over YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection. The VPS keeps the encoder running without your home computer, but you must plan for reconnects, monitor stream health, and handle footage and music rights.
Before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so request it ahead of your planned start. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements explain the prerequisites.
- A VPS with FFmpeg installed, enough capacity to encode your chosen video profile, and sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal CPU, memory, or bandwidth minimum; capacity depends on your input, encoding settings, and output profile.
- A video file you have the rights to stream, including any music or other audio it contains.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key, which you will copy from YouTube Studio and treat as credentials.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream.
- Keep the key private. Do not place it in a public repository, screenshot, or publicly visible log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Use the exact RTMPS endpoint and application path YouTube provides. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP; the developer guide specifies the valid ingestion endpoint, application path, and port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Choose a video profile and encoding settings
For a relatively static fireplace scene, 720p30 or 1080p30 can be a sensible starting point. Choose a resolution, codec, and bitrate together: higher output quality needs more encoding capacity and sustained upload bandwidth. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the target profile you intend to use. Its published figures can vary across localized or cached versions, so do not rely on a bitrate copied from an older guide.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 frames per second, a 60-frame GOP is two seconds.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. The FFmpeg example below uses H.264.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC and MP3. If your fireplace file is silent, check the stream preview and profile behavior before omitting audio; if you add an audio bed, make sure you have the rights to use it.
- Test at the intended resolution and bitrate: check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before relying on the stream.
Loop the fireplace video with FFmpeg
On the VPS, place the source video where FFmpeg can read it, then run a command like this after replacing the endpoint and path with the exact values from YouTube Studio:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i fireplace.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_PATH/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested or guaranteed configuration. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the selected options, and adjust the bitrate and output profile to match your video, VPS capacity, and available bandwidth. The example’s bitrate is not a YouTube recommendation for every resolution.

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes its streaming protocol support. The RTMPS address must still be the valid one YouTube supplies, not a guessed or generic endpoint.
Test, monitor, and keep the VPS process recoverable
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview for the expected picture, playback rate, and audio.
- Read YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. Correct issues before treating the stream as ready for continuous operation.
- Monitor FFmpeg’s exit status and logs, the VPS’s outbound connectivity, and disk space if you are saving a local recording.
- Configure your VPS service management to restart the encoder after a process failure, and test what happens when the network connection drops. FFmpeg’s TCP keepalive support can help detect dead peers, but it does not guarantee reconnection or uninterrupted service.
A VPS does not by itself provide guaranteed 24/7 uptime. The official technical sources do not establish one universal restart configuration or VPS specification; choose and test those for your own provider and workload.

Plan for YouTube archives and rights
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours may be archived automatically, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a dependable copy, record locally on the VPS or keep a separate source recording rather than relying on the live archive. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to the footage and audio, including music, and for following YouTube’s Community Guidelines. A fireplace video that you own does not automatically clear music embedded in it. Review YouTube’s terms and its applicable live-stream rules before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting common VPS stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect RTMPS server URL, application path, stream key, or channel eligibility | Copy the current endpoint and key from the Live Control Room, verify the channel meets the live-streaming requirements, and check FFmpeg’s connection error in its logs. |
| Preview is choppy or stream health reports trouble | VPS encoding load, inadequate sustained outbound bandwidth, or a profile that does not match the source and server capacity | Check CPU load and network stability; test a lower resolution or bitrate, and confirm the chosen profile against YouTube’s current encoder table. |
| Picture arrives but audio is missing or wrong | Silent source, incorrect audio mapping, or unsuitable audio settings | Inspect the source audio and FFmpeg output, then verify audio in the Live Control Room preview. If adding audio, use material you are licensed to stream. |
| The stream stops after a connection or process failure | FFmpeg exited or the VPS lost its connection; a long-lived RTMPS connection does not guarantee automatic recovery | Inspect the exit status and logs, restore connectivity, and test a service-manager restart or other recovery setup before relying on it continuously. |
| The live video is available but no complete archive appears | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold | Keep a separate recording if the archive matters, or plan shorter sessions with deliberate restarts. |
Or let it run in the cloud
