With FFmpeg stream copy (-c copy), the Pi forwards encoded packets instead of decoding and re-encoding the video. It does not make an incompatible camera feed compatible, and it cannot resize, overlay or otherwise alter the picture.
The procedure below is a configurable template, not a tested universal command. Confirm your input’s codecs, timestamps and audio, then check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it for a long broadcast.
When stream copy works—and when it does not
FFmpeg describes stream copy as copying encoded packets without decoding, filtering or encoding them. The option -c copy selects that mode; it is not a quality setting. The source and destination still need compatible codecs, streams, timestamps and container or ingestion requirements. A file or RTSP camera feed that plays locally is not automatically suitable for direct YouTube ingest.
Stream copy is a good fit when the feed is already encoded appropriately and you want to relay it unchanged. If you need to scale or crop the picture, add overlays, change frame rate, convert codecs or apply filters, FFmpeg must decode the affected stream and usually re-encode it. That is a different, more demanding job.

-c copycannot apply filters to encoded packets. - Unknown camera output: inspect its actual video and audio codecs, timestamps and stream layout before choosing passthrough.
What you need before starting
- A Raspberry Pi with a working network connection and a compatible FFmpeg build that includes the required input protocol and output muxer.
- An encoded input, such as a file or network feed, whose video and audio streams can be sent to YouTube in the chosen output format. The command below uses FLV output for RTMP(S); it may not suit every source.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, plus the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- Upload bandwidth above the stream bitrate with room for variation. Check the real connection rather than assuming the advertised speed is available continuously.
Keep the stream key private: YouTube treats it as the credential for your stream. Use the RTMPS URL provided by YouTube when available; RTMPS encrypts the connection. YouTube’s encoder workflow, stream settings and stream-key guidance explain where to manage these values. Do not paste a real key into a public script, screenshot or support post.
Configure the YouTube stream for the source
YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, HEVC or AV1 video options, with constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that any particular camera or FFmpeg build will meet them. In a stream-copy workflow, you cannot change the source’s keyframe interval without re-encoding; verify that the source itself is acceptable.

For H.264, YouTube lists 720p30 at a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended, and 1080p30 at a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Those are YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations, not measured requirements for every scene or network. A passthrough relay sends the source bitrate as-is; make sure the available upload capacity has headroom above it. YouTube also transcodes incoming streams for playback on different devices and network conditions, which is separate from whether the Pi re-encodes its outgoing source.
Send the feed with FFmpeg stream copy
- Get the ingest URL and key. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy the server URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides one. Treat the key as a password.
- Check the input. Identify the input path or RTSP URL and confirm which audio and video streams you want to send. If it contains extra streams or incompatible audio, map only the streams you intend to publish; mapping does not convert a codec.
- Adapt this template. Replace
INPUTwith your file or network input and replace the destination with the exact RTMPS URL and key shown in your account. Never publish a real key.
ffmpeg -i INPUT -map 0 -c copy -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"

This is a starting pattern, not a verified command for every Pi, FFmpeg package, RTSP camera or file. The -map 0 option requests all input streams; if the source includes streams you do not want, select only the intended video and audio streams instead. The output format, audio codec, packet timestamps and source container can also affect whether the mux succeeds. Check FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation for the behavior and limitations of your build.
- Start a test broadcast. Run the command while watching FFmpeg output for connection, timestamp, muxing or codec errors. Check the preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room before treating it as ready.
- Verify picture and sound. Confirm that the intended video and audio arrive, are in sync and remain stable. Test with content representative of the motion and audio in the planned broadcast.
- Observe a representative run. Check the actual upload rate and watch for network drops, process exits and source interruptions. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality in its live-streaming tips.
Raspberry Pi model: what matters for this workflow
In a successful stream-copy path, neither the Pi’s video encoder nor its video-decoding-and-encoding pipeline is being used to re-encode the video. The model’s encoder hardware matters if you capture or transcode video on the Pi, not because packet copying requires that encoder.

Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 manual says Pi 4 and earlier devices have dedicated H.264 and MJPEG encoding hardware. The current Raspberry Pi camera-software documentation says Pi 5 uses software video encoders; it notes that --low-latency can reduce encoding latency at a cost to coding efficiency and potentially maximum frame rate. These distinctions matter for capture or encoding workloads, but they do not establish that a particular Pi can relay every feed indefinitely. See the Picamera2 manual and Raspberry Pi’s camera-software documentation.
Plan for continuity, not just a successful connection
A process that connects once is not yet a dependable continuous broadcast. Plan to monitor the source, network, FFmpeg process, available storage if recording locally, and power. Test interruption and recovery behavior on your own setup; the cited platform guidance does not establish a particular watchdog, system service, UPS setup, storage endurance or 24/7 Pi configuration.

Decide what “continuous” means for your channel: a long-running relay process, one uninterrupted YouTube live event, or a sequence of sessions. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not establish the archive outcome for streams longer than that, so do not assume a longer event will archive in the same way. Check current YouTube rules and plan session rotation separately if archive availability or watch-page continuity matters.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube rejects the stream or reports unsupported settings: check the source codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio format, output muxer and timestamps. Stream copy cannot fix a mismatch; re-encode only if the source needs conversion or other changes.
- FFmpeg reports that a stream cannot be muxed: inspect which streams are mapped and whether the selected output container supports them. Remove unwanted streams with explicit mapping, or choose an appropriate encoding workflow if the wanted stream itself is incompatible.
- The preview is missing audio or video: confirm the input actually contains the expected stream and that your mapping includes it. A successful connection does not prove that every intended stream was sent.
- The broadcast stutters or drops: compare the outgoing bitrate with sustained available upload capacity and look for network instability or source interruptions. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing the real connection.
- The feed stops after starting: inspect FFmpeg’s exit output and determine whether the input ended, the network disconnected or YouTube closed the ingest. Test the recovery behavior of your particular process and network rather than assuming automatic restart.
- A stream key may have been exposed: reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings, then update the encoder with the replacement key.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stream an RTSP camera feed to YouTube with `-c copy`?
Possibly, if its encoded video, audio, timestamps and output muxing are compatible with YouTube ingest. Test the actual camera output in Live Control Room; RTSP alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Does stream copy mean YouTube viewers receive the original file unchanged?
No. Stream copy describes the Pi-to-YouTube leg. YouTube says it transcodes incoming streams into playback formats for devices and network conditions.
