What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To run a prerecorded playlist continuously on YouTube, put the clips in an FFmpeg concat-demuxer manifest, loop that input with -stream_loop -1, and send a live-encoded output to the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. This works best when every clip has matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If the files differ, normalize them first or use a filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes.
The concat demuxer joins packets; it does not make incompatible clips compatible. The command below is a starting point, not a guarantee for every file or FFmpeg build. Check the media, verify YouTube’s current encoder settings, and test the stream before leaving it unattended.
What the concat demuxer does—and what it does not do
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text manifest and presents the listed files’ packets in sequence as one input. It adjusts timestamps so each file follows the preceding file. It is useful when you want to join compatible files without re-encoding. FFmpeg’s requirement is explicit: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
It is not a general-purpose converter or a YouTube scheduler. You still need to produce a supported live output, provide a YouTube stream URL and secret stream key, keep the FFmpeg process running, and handle failures on the host yourself.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the clips before building the playlist
Confirm compatibility
For direct packet-level concatenation, inspect every clip with ffprobe and compare its streams: video and audio codec, time base, resolution, frame rate, pixel format, audio sample rate and channel layout, and whether audio or video streams are present. The files need matching stream layouts and codec parameters; clips that differ can fail, produce timestamp gaps, or show glitches at transitions.
Unequal audio and video durations can also lead to timestamp gaps. Incorrect duration information can shift timestamps and create artifacts. Test transitions locally instead of assuming a command will repair mismatches while broadcasting.
Choose direct joining or normalization
- Use the concat demuxer with stream copy when the clips have matching streams and parameters and you want to avoid re-encoding.
- Normalize the clips first when a fixed playlist has differing properties. A consistent set of prepared files is easier to inspect and troubleshoot.
- Use a filter-based concat pipeline when sources differ and need conversion as part of joining. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes the demuxer approach from the filter approach when re-encoding is needed.
Create the concat manifest
Make a plain-text file named playlist.txt and list each clip in playback order, one file directive per line:

Keep the manifest and media files in a controlled working directory if you want to use relative paths. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters. By default, the concat demuxer applies safe-path handling and rejects paths it considers unsafe. In the example command, -safe 0 disables that restriction and permits any filename, so use it only with a manifest and paths you trust. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s encoder settings.
- Use the URL and key in the FFmpeg output address. Treat the key like a password: YouTube says it tells the encoder where to send the feed and should be kept secret. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public log. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The encoder settings page recommends CBR and a keyframe frequency of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. It also recommends choosing codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate consistently. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings for the settings applicable to your stream.

Set the output profile for your actual stream
The sample’s 5 Mbps video bitrate is not a universal recommendation. YouTube’s current settings page lists 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, and 6 Mbps minimum / 17 Mbps recommended at 1080p60; its 4K/2160p30 row lists 14 Mbps minimum and 42 Mbps recommended. Use the row for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and recheck the live settings page before publishing.

The sample uses -g 60, which gives a two-second GOP at 30 frames per second. Choose a GOP length that yields the intended interval at your frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps is two seconds. Keep YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum in mind. Set resolution and frame rate deliberately to match the source and target rather than copying the sample blindly.

-re reads file input at its native rate, which is appropriate when feeding prerecorded media as a simulated live source. It does not resolve mismatched clip parameters, protect the process from crashes, or guarantee a stable connection.
Test the stream and plan for continuous operation
Run an unlisted test
- Start FFmpeg with an unlisted YouTube event before going public.
- Include both moving video and audio in the test, then check Live Control Room’s stream health and warning messages.
- Measure upload capacity on the actual connection used by the streaming host. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total outgoing bitrate; a nominal ISP plan speed alone does not confirm the host has enough available capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Keep the feed running and protect the archive
FFmpeg must remain running on the host that sends the stream. For unattended use, configure process supervision outside FFmpeg so a crash or host restart can start it again, and keep a local recording if the footage matters. These are operational precautions; they do not make a continuous YouTube archive reliable.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If an archive is important, plan shorter sessions and local recording rather than assuming a 24/7 feed will produce a complete YouTube replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg rejects a clip or errors when the next one starts: compare stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and codec parameters across all files. Normalize mismatches or use a filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes.
- Glitches or gaps occur at clip boundaries: check audio/video duration differences and duration metadata. Test transitions locally; incorrect durations can shift timestamps.
- The manifest cannot find a file: check the working directory and each relative path. Quote or escape special characters. If using
-safe 0, confirm the manifest is trusted and that the paths are correct. - YouTube reports a configuration or stream-health warning: check the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval against the current YouTube encoder settings for that profile.
- The stream buffers or disconnects: verify the actual host connection’s available upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect Live Control Room’s health messages.
- The process stops after a host restart or crash: FFmpeg does not itself supervise a crashed process. Configure an external process supervisor and test its restart behavior before relying on unattended operation.
- The stream is live but no complete replay appears: a session longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use local recording and shorter sessions if archive availability matters.
