To keep prerecorded video streaming on YouTube while your own PC is off, run the encoder in the cloud: upload or provide the video, connect the service to your YouTube stream with a stream key, and start the broadcast. For a documentary channel, this can keep a scheduled or looping program online without leaving a home computer and internet connection running. A live camera, microphone, or gameplay source at home is different: it must also be captured or hosted somewhere that remains available.
Choose where the stream will run
YouTube receives a video feed from an encoder. If that encoder runs on your PC, the computer and its internet connection must remain available. To turn them off, move the encoder and prerecorded media to a cloud service or a remote computer you manage.
| Option | What stays on | Who manages the stream |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo, a managed cloud service | The cloud service runs the uploaded video and sends it to YouTube; your PC can be off. | The service handles cloud playback and transmission. You configure the YouTube destination and stream. |
| Another managed cloud service | The provider’s cloud encoder and media hosting. | You configure its controls and assess its formats, monitoring, recovery, credential handling, and current price. YouTube’s encoder help lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; that listing establishes relevance, not comparative quality or endorsement. YouTube encoder setup |
| Self-managed remote host, such as a VPS | The remote computer and its encoder. | You install, configure, update, monitor, and recover the system. Specific sizing, cost, and uptime depend on the provider and setup; no general figures are established here. |
| Your local PC and encoder | Your PC, source media, and internet connection. | You manage the encoder, but this does not meet the goal of turning the PC off. |
For a documentary stream made from recordings, a managed cloud service is the most direct way to keep your own PC off. When comparing services, check supported file formats and output settings, playlist and loop controls, monitoring and recovery, how the YouTube channel is connected, media and credential handling, and total recurring cost. No independent current comparison establishes which providers are most reliable or cheapest.
Prepare your YouTube channel and stream
- Enable live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. After activation, a stream can go live immediately. YouTube encoder setup
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the one you intend to use. Locate the stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or send it to someone who should not control the stream.
- Provide the prerecorded video to your chosen host. Upload the file or otherwise make it available to the service, then set the playlist or looping behavior you need. Confirm that the media format and output settings are supported by that provider.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the host’s encoder settings. Start the encoder and check the preview and live status in YouTube Studio before relying on an unattended broadcast. Hosting the media does not remove the need to configure the YouTube destination.
Set compatible encoder output
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; the selected service must also support your chosen format. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings alongside your provider’s requirements for the full settings, including resolution and bitrate, rather than assuming one bitrate fits every output quality.

Plan for replays and uninterrupted broadcasts
If you need a replay in the channel archive, account for the length of the stream. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. Its documentation does not promise automatic archiving for a single uninterrupted stream that exceeds 12 hours. If a replay matters, plan an ending and archive workflow that fits the under-12-hour rule rather than relying on a longer broadcast being saved.
What changes when the source is live
This method works for prerecorded documentaries, recordings, or another source already available to the cloud encoder. If the program depends on a camera, microphone, or gameplay session running at home, switching off the PC cuts off that local source unless it is captured or hosted remotely too. A cloud encoder can transmit material it can access; it cannot make an unavailable home source continue by itself.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers it. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. The service is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
Troubleshoot before leaving the stream unattended
- Stream will not start: If live streaming was only just enabled, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Then check the Live Control Room status and confirm the encoder has the correct stream URL and key.
- YouTube shows no preview or incoming feed: Check that the cloud encoder is running, that the selected stream is the intended destination, and that its URL and key match the values in YouTube Studio. Do not share the key publicly; rotate or replace it if it has been exposed.
- Encoder rejects the connection or output: Confirm the provider supports the media and codec you selected. Use YouTube’s RTMPS recommendation, constant bitrate, and two-second keyframes (no more than four seconds), and check the provider’s requirements for resolution and bitrate.
- The broadcast stops after the home PC is shut down: The encoder or source may still be running locally. Verify that the cloud host itself has the media and is sending the feed; a remote host must be configured and running independently.
- You cannot find a saved replay: Check the stream duration. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; the documentation does not guarantee automatic archiving for a longer single stream.
Keep rights and channel policies in view
Cloud hosting changes where the encoder runs; it does not grant rights to the video or guarantee that a channel or stream complies with YouTube policies. Use documentary footage, music, narration, and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permissions, and review YouTube’s current rules before scheduling a long-running broadcast. For an unattended stream, also verify that the media is the version you intend to publish and that the stream title, description, and destination are correct in YouTube Studio.
