Check both the VPS’s outbound-data allowance and its CPU: relaying an already-encoded file is generally less demanding than transcoding it, while continuous streaming can consume terabytes of monthly transfer.
What this setup does—and what it does not
This guide covers sending prerecorded media from a Linux VPS to YouTube Live using FFmpeg. The media must be on the server or fetched reliably. A pre-encoded file may be relayed without re-encoding if its codecs, container and timestamps suit the output; transcoding changes the media and uses CPU continuously. The right mode depends on the actual file, so do not assume stream-copy will work for every video.
This is not a camera-capture setup. Nor is the example command below a tested, unattended deployment: it shows the documented FFmpeg file-to-RTMP pattern, which you must adapt and validate against your file and YouTube’s current ingest details.

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and retrieve the ingest server URL and stream key. Configure FFmpeg with the values YouTube supplies; do not copy a key from an example or assume the endpoint is permanent.

Treat the key as a password. Avoid putting it in public scripts or repositories, and take care with shell history, logs, access permissions and any system service configuration that contains it.

Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when YouTube provides one. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data into and through Google’s servers. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream, check the preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room, and only then rely on the setup for a long session.

Choose settings for YouTube and the server
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode at a given quality. The following H.264 bitrates are YouTube’s published recommendations on its settings page, accessed 2026-10-03. Select a rate that matches the source and a stable upload path.

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as video codec options, and AAC or MP3 for audio. For the encoder settings it specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds. Its guidance recommends RTMPS. Check the current details at YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate page.
Use the actual media’s motion and audio in a test. If you transcode, the VPS must keep up with the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate; if you relay compatible pre-encoded media, that avoids the repeated encoding workload but does not remove transfer, network or process-reliability requirements.
Use FFmpeg’s file-to-RTMP pattern carefully
FFmpeg documents this generic example for sending a file at real-time pace to an RTMP destination:

The destination shown is illustrative, not a YouTube endpoint. Replace it with the server URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, using the RTMPS endpoint where YouTube supplies one. Do not publish a real key.
Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the documented pattern. This command is not a complete service configuration or a verified end-to-end YouTube deployment. First confirm that FFmpeg is installed and that its build supports the required input and output, then check that the input file exists and can be read. Validate the file’s codecs and timestamps, and monitor YouTube’s preview and stream-health status during a test.

Make an unattended stream recoverable
A command that starts successfully is not yet a dependable 24/7 setup. Before leaving it unattended, plan for the process and the media, not just the initial connection.

Use a process supervisor or equivalent service management to restart FFmpeg after an unexpected exit; configure and test restart behavior rather than assuming it will recover correctly.

Keep logs that help identify connection, input-file and resource errors, while ensuring they do not expose the stream key.

Check disk space and file availability. A missing, moved or unreadable file can stop a loop even when the VPS itself remains online.

Observe CPU, memory, network transfer and YouTube stream health. Test the intended quality and workload instead of treating a VPS plan’s advertised port speed as proof of sustained encoding capacity.

Test what happens when YouTube or the network drops the connection. A supervisor can restart a process, but you still need to confirm that the resulting reconnect behavior works with your stream and YouTube’s current setup.

Check whether a ₹500 VPS has enough monthly bandwidth
Estimate outbound transfer from the sustained stream bitrate, not the headline port speed. The following are approximate decimal-unit calculations for a bitrate held continuously for 30 days; they are estimates, not measured provider usage. Protocol overhead and retransmissions can increase actual transfer.

At 4 Mbps, the estimate already exceeds a 1 TB allowance; a 2 TB allowance is closer on paper, but leaves limited headroom as bitrate rises or actual transfer exceeds the simple calculation. A provider’s port speed describes link rate, not a monthly data allowance or a promise that the server can encode continuously.
These are provider-listed examples, not independently tested plans for continuous FFmpeg use. Listings can change; confirm the checkout total, tax, renewal price, egress terms and resource allocation with the provider before buying.

No independent benchmark here establishes how either listed plan performs under a continuous FFmpeg workload. A low plan price is not enough to conclude that it will meet your stream’s CPU, egress and reliability needs.

Know the difference between a running encoder and a YouTube archive
YouTube’s help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single session longer than 12 hours will produce a complete archive. Keeping FFmpeg alive and obtaining a recordable YouTube session are separate goals. If preserving archives matters, consider a schedule that keeps sessions within the documented window and verify current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on it.
