Usually, no. If your laptop is running the streaming software and sending the video to YouTube, shutting it down stops that feed. The livestream can continue only if another powered device or service independently keeps sending video.
Why shutting down the laptop usually stops the stream
YouTube Live needs a device or service to send it a video feed. In an encoder setup, the streaming software sends that feed using the YouTube server URL and stream key. If the laptop is running the encoder, turning it off interrupts the source YouTube is receiving. This follows from YouTube Help’s documented encoder workflow; it is not a separate rule stating that every laptop shutdown ends every stream in precisely the same way.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Shutting down the computer running that encoder prevents it from continuing to send content.
What happens with different streaming setups

YouTube identifies mobile, webcam and encoder streaming as broad ways to go live. Its guidance describes encoders as useful for gameplay, overlays and audio or camera hardware, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. The label “hardware encoder” alone does not guarantee continuity: the video source, encoder, network and power all have to remain available independently.

How to tell whether your stream can continue
- Identify the feed source. Check which device is capturing or providing the video.
- Identify the sender. Find the device or service running the streaming encoder and using the YouTube server URL and stream key.
- Check independence. If you shut down the laptop, confirm that the source and sender still have their own power and network access and can keep delivering video.
- End the stream deliberately when you mean to stop it. For scheduled encoder streams, YouTube’s instructions include clicking “End Stream” and stopping the encoder’s outgoing content.
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control encoder operation; they do not make a laptop-based feed survive that laptop being shut down. Likewise, a stream being automatically archived does not mean its live feed keeps running: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but the archive is separate from continued live transmission.
Shutdown, sleep and disconnection are not the same case
A full shutdown stops the laptop’s encoder. Closing the lid may instead leave the laptop running or put it to sleep, depending on its power settings; if it sleeps, the encoder or network connection may stop. A lost network connection, power failure or streaming-app crash can also interrupt the feed. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish one universal grace period or reconnection behavior for every streaming mode and encoder setup, so do not rely on a particular timeout or assume the stream will resume automatically.
