You can use Google Drive to store the videos for a 24/7 YouTube stream, but YouTube Live does not document a Drive folder or share link as a continuous playlist input. The dependable do-it-yourself setup is to make the video files available to an always-on computer, play them through a streaming encoder, and send that live feed to YouTube. Check that the files play and the encoder reaches YouTube before starting the broadcast.
How the Drive-to-YouTube setup works
Google Drive is the storage and browser-playback layer. A streaming encoder reads the actual video files and sends an audio-video feed to YouTube Live. YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream from the viewer-facing broadcast; a saved stream configuration can be reused for separate broadcast events. Google’s documentation describes Drive storage and playback, but not feeding a Drive folder or public share link directly into YouTube Live as a continuous playlist source. Google Drive: Upload files and folders to Google Drive · YouTube Live Streaming API
Prepare your documentary playlist in Drive
- Upload and organize the source videos. Put them in the intended playback order and retain the originals. Drive supports browser playback for formats including WebM (VP8/Vorbis), MPEG4/3GPP/MOV (H.264/MPEG-4 and AAC), AVI, MPEGPS, WMV, FLV, MTS, and OGG. Compatibility can vary by device, so confirm each file plays in the environment you will use. Google Drive Help
- Make the files available to the encoder. Download them or use a sync arrangement that leaves accessible copies on the encoder computer. This is practical setup guidance, not a Google or YouTube requirement. Do not assume a Drive sharing URL is a direct media URL that an encoder can continuously play.
- Check storage and playback before broadcast. Ensure the complete playlist is present and playable, and that the computer has enough disk space for the files and any working copies. Drive browser playback is capped at 1920 × 1080, and its playback quality depends on internet speed. That is a Drive playback limit, not a statement of YouTube’s ingest resolution. Google Drive Help
Set up the encoder and YouTube Live
- Create or configure the live event in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, configure the stream and broadcast, then select an ingestion protocol that your encoder supports. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation explains the distinction between reusable stream settings and individual broadcast events. YouTube Live Streaming API
- Configure the encoder to play the local playlist. Set its media source to the accessible video files and make sure the playlist order and loop behavior are what you intend. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output; this does not establish a specific OBS playlist configuration. Follow the encoder’s documentation for media-source and looping controls. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Protect and enter the stream key. Copy the key from the YouTube live setup into the encoder’s stream configuration. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview and health status. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended video and audio, inspect the stream status or health information, and only then start or confirm the broadcast for viewers. YouTube’s API exposes stream status and health fields for monitoring. YouTube Live Streaming API
Choose an ingestion protocol the encoder can support
Use the protocol that fits your encoder and latency needs; HLS is not automatically the best choice for every setup. YouTube documents HLS requirements that matter if you select it:
- Use HTTPS and send TS segments.
- Keep segment duration between one and four seconds.
- Maintain a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Expect higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion.
YouTube’s HLS guidance also specifies supported codecs and segment behavior. Use a compatible encoder configuration rather than assuming that any playlist or segment format will work. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream · YouTube Live Streaming API: HLS ingestion

Keep a long-running stream observable
A 24/7 broadcast depends on more than the playlist: the encoder must keep reading media, the computer and network must remain available, and YouTube must continue receiving a healthy feed. Monitor playback, connectivity, and YouTube’s stream health. A local copy reduces reliance on retrieving each video from Drive during playback, but it does not remove the need to monitor the encoder or network.
- Check that the current playlist item advances and that audio remains present.
- Watch for encoder errors, computer sleep or restart, storage problems, and internet interruptions.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health after starting and periodically while operating the stream.
- Keep source files and a playlist record so you can restore the sequence if the encoder or local files need recovery.
Plan separately for the live stream and its replay
Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete replay. Google’s Live Production Guide says streams under 12 hours will be archived; it does not establish a universal archive outcome for longer sessions. Retain the source videos and check YouTube Studio’s current archive behavior and channel-specific requirements before relying on a replay. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot open a Drive link | A sharing link is not necessarily a direct, encoder-ready media source. | Make the video file available locally or through an encoder-accessible sync location, then select the actual file as the media source. |
| A video will not play or has no sound | The file format, codec, or audio track may not work in the playback environment. | Test the file before going live, confirm its audio track, and use a format supported by your playback software and encoder. Drive’s documented playback formats do not guarantee compatibility on every device. Google Drive Help |
| YouTube does not show an incoming feed | The encoder may be stopped, using the wrong key or protocol, or unable to reach YouTube. | Verify the selected stream configuration and key, confirm the encoder is sending, and inspect YouTube’s preview and status. |
| The feed is unstable or drops | The encoder computer, network, source storage, or YouTube ingest may be interrupted. | Check encoder logs and YouTube stream health, confirm the files remain accessible, and restore the feed through the encoder if needed. A 24/7 setup is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. |
| HLS is rejected or delayed | The segment format or playlist may not meet YouTube’s HLS requirements, or HLS latency may not suit the use case. | Check HTTPS, TS segments, one-to-four-second segment duration, and the limit of five outstanding segments; compare with a supported continuous RTMP workflow if lower latency is important. YouTube HLS guidance |
| The replay is missing or incomplete after a day-long stream | The stream exceeded the under-12-hour archive guidance. | Keep the originals and verify current archive behavior in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the full long broadcast will be saved. YouTube Help: Archive live streams |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want an encoder computer and home connection to remain on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
