To loop several prerecorded videos in an OBS-powered YouTube Live stream, add them to OBS’s VLC Video Source, enable Loop Playlist, and send OBS’s output to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Keep the source visible in the active scene, test the playlist and audio, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health before going live.
What you need before setting up the loop
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the same computer. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
- The video files you want to play, accessible from the computer running OBS.
- A YouTube Live stream created or selected in YouTube Studio, so you can copy its stream URL and key.
- An upload connection that can sustain the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you choose.
OBS’s built-in Media Source handles an individual file, while VLC Video Source supports a playlist. OBS lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for video, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for audio in Media Source; VLC uses its own libraries for extended media support. Add and configure a playlist in OBS
- Open the scene you will stream. In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video Source. If that option is missing, install VLC with the same architecture as OBS.
- Add the files. In the source properties, add the media items to its playlist. Make sure the paths point to files that remain available on the streaming computer.
- Set the order. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play items in listed order. Turn it on for randomized order.
- Confirm the loop. Leave Loop Playlist checked. OBS documents this as enabled by default, but confirm the setting in the properties before relying on it.
- Keep the source visible. OBS documents that VLC Video Source stops when it is not visible and restarts when visible by default. Keep it visible in the active scene so playback continues.
- Check the scene output. Preview the scene and confirm the video is framed as intended and audio is present in the OBS mixer.

For a single file instead
If you only need to repeat one video, add a Media Source and enable its Loop option. That repeats the selected file; it is not a substitute for a multi-item VLC playlist. Media Source’s Restart playback when source becomes active is on by default. If looping is disabled, Show nothing when playback ends is also on by default.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live to reach the Live Control Room, then create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy that stream’s URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream; select YouTube if it is offered, or enter the server URL and key supplied by YouTube.
- Click Start Streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait until the Live Control Room shows the incoming preview. Check picture and sound, then click Go live in YouTube.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes the encoder to send to the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update OBS. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube stream key guidance. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not remove the need to manage longer broadcasts deliberately.
Choose output settings that your connection can sustain
There is no single bitrate that fits every stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube’s published table gives 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube Help recommendations; the page does not state a publication date. Check its current table for your exact combination rather than applying these examples to another resolution or codec: YouTube encoder settings.

Choose a quality that remains reliable on your actual upload connection. A higher setting is not useful if it causes dropped frames or an unhealthy stream. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast, and monitoring stream health during the stream.
Test the playlist before a public broadcast
- Use a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate.
- Watch the playlist advance to the next item and return to the start after the final item.
- Check that every file loads, the picture is framed correctly, and audio plays at the intended level.
- Confirm the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators are clear before clicking Go live.
- For documentaries and other prerecorded material, confirm you have the necessary rights to every video and audio track. A technical loop does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted work. YouTube’s policies and enforcement can affect whether a stream remains available.

Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems

Can OBS loop one video without VLC?
Yes. Add it as a Media Source and enable Loop; VLC Video Source is for a playlist of multiple items.
Can I shuffle the videos instead of playing them in order?
Yes. Enable Shuffle Playlist in VLC Video Source properties; it is off by default.

Does YouTube automatically publish the stream when OBS starts sending?
For a scheduled stream, no: wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live.
