You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a spare desktop if it stays powered, your encoder can send a continuous feed, and your BSNL connection can sustain the stream’s upload bitrate. The title alone cannot establish whether your BSNL plan will do that: the plan, service area, connection type, actual upload performance, and fair-use terms all matter. Test from the desktop’s location with representative video and audio before relying on the stream.
What you need before you start
- A desktop that can remain powered and ventilated while encoding continuously.
- A stable internet connection at the desktop. Use wired Ethernet if available.
- A live encoder, such as OBS, configured to send a continuous broadcast to YouTube.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a stream key from YouTube Studio.
- Video and audio you have the rights to broadcast. A continuous stream does not make copyrighted material permissible, and livestreaming does not guarantee monetization or channel eligibility.
BSNL’s current upload performance cannot be inferred from an advertised download speed. Its official tariff document surfaced for this topic is a Chennai document updated in 2019, so it is historical and does not establish current prices, speeds, or fair-use terms for your connection: BSNL Chennai broadband tariff document (2019).
Check whether your BSNL connection can sustain the stream
Confirm the terms that apply to your plan
Ask BSNL or check your current account details for the sustained upload speed, any fair-use threshold, and the speed or service conditions that apply after reaching it. Confirm the plan and terms for your service area; a historical tariff sheet is not a reliable substitute.
Test upload from the actual desktop location
- Connect the desktop as it will be connected during the broadcast. Prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi when practical.
- Run an upload-speed test at different times, especially during the hours you intend to stream. Treat a speed-test result as a snapshot, not proof of uninterrupted service.
- Do a real encoder test with audio and motion similar to the planned programme. YouTube specifically advises testing before starting a live stream and monitoring stream health while live: YouTube live encoder settings and guidance.
- During the test, watch the encoder’s dropped-frame or connection indicators and YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the feed is unstable, reduce the resolution or bitrate, pause other uploads on the connection, and test again.
Leave practical room for fluctuations and other household internet use. There is no universal headroom figure established for an unspecified BSNL service, so choose settings based on repeated real-world tests rather than a single advertised or measured peak.

Choose YouTube encoder settings
For a straightforward desktop setup, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), RTMPS ingest, and a two-second keyframe interval are a useful starting point. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 among supported encoder codecs, but the simplest compatible setup for many desktop workflows is H.264.
The following are YouTube Help’s H.264 bitrate figures as accessed in 2026. They are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular BSNL line can sustain the stream:

Start at a resolution and bitrate that your sustained upload test can support, then run a realistic test before raising quality. YouTube transcodes an incoming broadcast into formats for viewers, so the incoming encoder setting is not the only factor affecting how viewers watch.
Set up the desktop and start the broadcast
- Prepare the computer. Place it where air can circulate, connect it to power and the network, and disable sleep or hibernation for the streaming session. Avoid scheduling operating-system updates or other restarts during a planned broadcast.
- Enable live streaming and create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow, create or select a stream, and locate its stream key and ingest settings. YouTube’s labels can change; use the current YouTube Studio instructions if the screen differs.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS or your chosen encoder, set the video source or playlist, audio source, H.264, CBR, the chosen bitrate and resolution, and a two-second keyframe interval. Select YouTube RTMPS when the encoder offers it.
- Enter the stream key securely. Copy the key from YouTube Studio into the encoder’s YouTube stream settings. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share screenshots that reveal it.
- Test before the long run. Send a test with representative motion and sound. Check that YouTube receives the stream, audio is present, and the health indicators remain acceptable before committing to a continuous broadcast.
- Start and monitor. Start the encoder and confirm the stream is live in YouTube Studio. Keep an eye on encoder statistics and YouTube stream health, particularly after changing settings or when household network use changes.
Keep a local 24/7 stream running
Power, heat, and network interruptions
A desktop-based stream depends on the computer, local power, and home internet staying available. Keep the machine ventilated and use a wired connection where possible. A UPS may help the desktop and network equipment ride through a brief local power interruption, but it cannot fix a BSNL outage or guarantee that YouTube remains connected. BSNL’s terms identify technical, network, power, and maintenance issues as possible sources of interruptions and do not establish uninterrupted service: BSNL terms and conditions.

Plan for encoder or connection recovery
Check the current documentation for your encoder before relying on automatic reconnect or restart behavior; recovery controls and their effects vary by software and version. Test what happens if the connection briefly drops or the encoder is restarted. A local desktop can resume sending after a problem, but recovery does not erase the interruption from the broadcast.
Understand continuous data use
At a constant bitrate, video payload grows with bitrate and elapsed time; audio and transport overhead add to actual network traffic. Your usage therefore depends on the chosen settings and how long the stream runs. Check your own plan’s applicable usage rules rather than assuming an unlimited or unchanged service from an old tariff document.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer or home connection to remain responsible for a 24/7 stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The basic process is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud.
- Your upload is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than separate quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; the free day is one per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Troubleshooting a desktop stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Incorrect stream key, ingest selection, or encoder connection | Confirm the current stream key and RTMPS settings in YouTube Studio and re-enter them in the encoder. Do not expose the key publicly. |
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or other devices are using the connection | Lower bitrate or resolution, use Ethernet if possible, limit competing uploads, and repeat a representative test at the desktop. |
| Video works but audio is missing | Wrong or muted audio source, or encoder audio configuration | Check the selected input, mute state, and audio meter in the encoder, then test a short broadcast before returning to the long run. |
| Stream stops when nobody is using the desktop | Sleep, hibernation, power loss, restart, or encoder exit | Review power and sleep settings, planned updates, cooling, and encoder recovery documentation. A UPS only helps with brief local power interruptions. |
| Quality degrades after a period of streaming | Network variation, competing usage, thermal or software issue, or plan usage conditions | Compare encoder statistics with YouTube’s health status, check the current BSNL plan terms, and test at the same time and location. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before setting a stream to run continuously, confirm that you have the rights needed for every video, soundtrack, image, and other element in the broadcast. Replaying material does not itself establish permission. Also review YouTube’s current live-streaming and channel monetization rules if monetization matters to you; a technically stable stream is not a promise of policy compliance or monetization. For a practical starting checklist, see StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
