A single setting cannot prevent every frozen-looking 24/7 YouTube stream. First locate where the image stops updating: the source, OBS, YouTube’s ingest, or a viewer’s playback. Then address the evidence at that point, test under realistic conditions, and monitor the stream while it runs.
Find where the image stops updating
A frozen picture can mean different things: the video source has stopped, the encoder is struggling, OBS is losing its connection to YouTube, or an individual viewer is buffering. Changing bitrate will not fix every one of these problems.
- Check the source and OBS preview. Confirm that the video or scene itself is moving and that OBS’s local preview updates. If either is already static, inspect the media playback, source, and scene configuration before changing network settings. A network adjustment is unlikely to correct an image that has stopped upstream.
- Check OBS’s status. Look at the dropped-frame counter and encoder or rendering status. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; use its connection troubleshooting steps when this occurs. OBS: Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the preview, stream health, and messages to see whether YouTube is receiving an updating picture and audio. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health while live. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Compare with viewer reports. If OBS shows no dropped frames and YouTube’s preview is updating, ask whether the problem affects one viewer, device, or connection. OBS notes that viewers’ devices and internet connections differ, and that viewers can buffer even when the broadcaster’s OBS is not dropping frames. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting
This sequence separates a source or encoder issue from transmission problems and viewer-side playback. A report that the stream “froze” alone does not identify which one occurred.
Match YouTube’s encoder settings to your stream
YouTube’s reviewed live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS. These are transmission settings, not a guarantee against a stalled source, software fault, power interruption, or upstream outage.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose bitrate for the exact codec and output
Use the row for your codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current bitrate table. Do not treat minimum and recommended rates as interchangeable. For examples, YouTube lists these recommended bitrates:
| Output | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommendations on the linked Help page, which does not display a publication year; check its current table before configuring a stream. Your internet connection must also sustain the selected bitrate consistently, with room for normal variation.

Keep keyframes and bitrate predictable
- Set the encoder to CBR rather than a variable bitrate mode.
- Set keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where your encoder offers it for YouTube.
- Keep resolution and frame rate within the matching YouTube bitrate guidance and what the encoder and connection can sustain.
YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. That does not remove the need for a stable incoming stream or an appropriate bitrate.
Fix OBS dropped frames and connection interruptions
If OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, investigate the path from the streaming computer to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as the central causes to address.

- Lower the bitrate if necessary. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point in its general troubleshooting guidance. This is a rough OBS troubleshooting starting point, not a YouTube rule or guarantee. It still needs to be reconciled with YouTube’s codec, resolution, and frame-rate recommendations.
- Prefer wired Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming. If already wired, check whether the cable is damaged or loose; if replacing a suspect cable, an Ethernet cable is a targeted troubleshooting purchase, not a universal freeze prevention measure.
- Check the network equipment and software. Review router and modem operation, network drivers, cables, and possible interference from VPN, security, or network-optimizer software. Change one variable at a time and watch whether OBS’s dropped-frame behavior changes.
- Contact your ISP if the fault persists. If the connection remains unstable after local checks, ask the ISP to investigate rather than raising the stream bitrate.
OBS’s 75% starting point uses total upload speed, but a speed test alone does not establish that the connection can sustain that rate continuously. Choose conservatively and test during the conditions in which the stream will actually run.
If OBS is clean but viewers see buffering
When OBS shows no dropped frames, ask affected viewers to compare another device or connection and report whether the YouTube player is buffering or whether the picture itself stops while playback continues. Different viewer networks and devices can behave differently. Lowering bitrate or output quality may help the stream reach more viewers, but make the change only after checking the source, OBS, and YouTube’s preview and health status.

YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube Help recommends testing and monitoring stream health during the event. For a long-running broadcast, use a test that resembles the real one rather than relying only on a brief static screen.

- Include movement and audio similar to the actual broadcast so a static image or missing audio is easier to spot.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame and encoder status alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s preview, health, and messages.
- Check that the picture and audio continue to update after the test begins, not just at startup.
Monitoring can reveal a failure, but it does not create a watchdog or failover system. The reviewed platform guidance does not establish a design that guarantees recovery from every stalled source, encoder, power, network, or platform fault.
