Test the full setup before relying on it. Most importantly, do not count on YouTube to save the complete replay: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so make a local recording if preserving the whole broadcast matters.
Before you start: check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete that step well before your planned broadcast. YouTube describes encoder streaming as a way to send a computer-produced feed, including overlays and external audio or video, and lists OBS among its verified encoder options. It says expensive equipment is not required to get started. That does not mean every old PC can encode every resolution: capacity depends on the particular computer, source, encoder and chosen settings.
How to set up a 24/7 YouTube stream from an old PC
- Enable live streaming and prepare the channel. In YouTube Studio, follow YouTube’s live-streaming setup prompts. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or select a stream in Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming controls and create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Keep the stream key private. In your encoder, enter YouTube’s stream URL as the server or destination and paste the stream key in the key field. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your stream. You can reset a compromised key, and custom keys can be reused. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Set the video and audio source. Choose the recording, playlist or other feed you intend to broadcast, and confirm that both picture and sound are present in the encoder preview. The exact controls depend on the encoder.
- Choose output settings your PC can sustain. Set resolution and frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio format and keyframe interval. YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS guidance is summarized below; consult its encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the relevant resolution and frame rate.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Before a public broadcast, check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that the picture, sound and stream health are acceptable. Test with content that has similar motion and audio to the material you plan to stream.
- Start the stream and keep watch on it. Verify the broadcast from the channel or watch page and, where practical, another device such as a phone. Check stream health rather than assuming that an encoder showing “live” means viewers are receiving a good feed.
- Plan a local recording if the complete program matters. Enable local recording in the encoder and confirm that the PC has enough storage for the intended retention period. A full-day stream can exceed YouTube’s automatic archive limit.
What bitrate and encoder settings should you use?
For standard RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use only a codec supported by both your encoder and the PC’s available encoding path; the listed codecs are not a performance ranking for your particular machine.

The bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not a guarantee of stable performance on a particular PC or internet plan. YouTube says the available upload bandwidth must exceed the stream bitrate and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For example, a 14 Mbps stream needs a reliable upload capacity above 14 Mbps, with additional margin; a speed-test peak alone does not establish that the connection will hold that rate continuously. - Start with a sustainable resolution and frame rate. If the encoder drops frames or the PC struggles, lower resolution or frame rate before increasing bitrate.
- Use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval. Set a 2-second interval where available, and do not exceed 4 seconds under YouTube’s guidance.
- Measure the real upload connection. Leave the recommended headroom for normal network variation and other traffic; a shared or unstable connection can fail even when its advertised speed appears sufficient.
- Test the full combination. Resolution, frame rate, codec, source complexity, computer load and network stability all affect the result. YouTube does not establish a universal minimum PC specification for every spare computer.
Can you leave OBS running all day?
You can configure an encoder such as OBS to send a continuous feed, but a 24/7 broadcast is only as dependable as the whole chain: PC, encoder, power, internet connection and YouTube ingest. Neither a spare-PC label nor an encoder’s live indicator guarantees indefinite operation. Test the exact configuration and check stream health periodically. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up in advance and checking access from channel or watch pages and mobile devices.

For a computer that needs a router connection, Ethernet is an option, not a universal requirement. The important point is a reliable connection; YouTube’s tips include disconnecting Ethernet as a failover test, which can help reveal whether the setup behaves as expected when connectivity changes.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a complete 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance is: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Enable a local recording if retaining the whole program is important, and check that the recording is actually being written. Storage needs depend on bitrate, format, resolution and how long you keep the files; there is no single capacity recommendation that fits every setup. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, restrictions in the preceding 90 days and whether first-time activation has completed. Activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Confirm that the stream URL and key match the selected Live Control Room stream. Check for extra spaces or an outdated key; reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Check actual upload capacity, reduce the bitrate or output settings, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth margin. Also check for competing network traffic.
- The PC drops frames or struggles: Reduce resolution or frame rate and retest. The codec and settings must be supported by the encoder and computer; there is no universal preset for unspecified hardware.
- Viewers report missing or distorted sound: Confirm the intended audio source is selected and that the encoder preview carries sound. Recheck the audio format against YouTube’s supported AAC or MP3 guidance.
- The broadcast ends after a power, PC or network interruption: Check the cause and restart the encoder and stream as needed. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not promise automatic recovery for every local power, computer or connection failure.
- The YouTube replay is incomplete or absent: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Use the local recording as the preservation copy when the full broadcast is needed.
