You can run a prerecorded playlist from OBS on a Contabo VPS and send it to YouTube Live, but keeping the encoder process open is not the same as guaranteeing an uninterrupted broadcast. You must confirm the VPS can run your OBS setup, test sustained upload and stream health, and plan for failures. This walkthrough gives you a practical workflow; no particular Contabo plan or complete OBS-on-Contabo configuration is verified here.
What you need to verify before you start
- A Contabo VPS with an operating system and remote-access setup you can administer. Contabo’s first-install guide describes installing an available image through the Customer Control Panel and using an SSH public key for Linux; it does not establish that a particular instance has enough sustained CPU, memory, graphics support, or network capacity for OBS. Contabo’s first-install guide
- OBS Studio configured to play your prerecorded media and send an encoder stream. OBS’s hardware encoders require compatible hardware and drivers; do not assume a VPS exposes NVENC, Quick Sync, or another hardware encoder. OBS hardware encoding requirements
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, access to YouTube Studio, and media you have the right to broadcast.
- Enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the selected bitrate plus headroom. YouTube recommends 20% above the combined stream bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips
Contabo’s available plans, regional capacity, transfer terms, and pricing can change. Check the current offer and confirm the resources and network capacity for the exact VPS you intend to use; no plan-specific benchmark or guaranteed upload figure is established here.
Provision the Contabo VPS
- Sign in to the Contabo Customer Control Panel and install the VPS image for the operating system you intend to administer. Follow the provider’s current setup instructions and save the access details securely. Contabo server installation instructions
- Connect using the access method configured for the instance. For Linux, Contabo’s guide describes SSH public-key use; protect the private key and do not share it.
- Before installing or launching OBS, verify that the selected OS image supports the display or desktop environment your OBS setup needs, and determine whether compatible encoding hardware and drivers are actually available. The cited Contabo setup instructions do not validate a specific OBS desktop or GPU configuration.
Prepare and check the playlist
Use media you are allowed to stream
Upload only recordings for which you hold the necessary rights, including rights to music, footage, performances, and any other embedded material. A file being available online or being credited to its creator does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube may limit or remove a live stream when it detects content that violates its rules or rights.
Confirm the loop before going live
Configure your chosen OBS setup to play the playlist and repeat it. The exact source or playlist controls depend on how OBS is installed and configured on your instance, and a complete Contabo-specific OBS workflow is not established here. Check the item order, audio levels, transitions, and what happens when playback reaches the end. Observe at least one complete loop before leaving it unattended; a playlist that stops, goes silent, or displays a blank frame at the boundary will repeat that problem on air.

Create the YouTube Live connection
- Enable live streaming for the channel if it has not already been enabled, then create or select the live event in YouTube Studio.
- Open the event’s current stream settings and use the server address and stream key shown there. In OBS, enter the current YouTube server details and key in its streaming connection settings. OBS’s community walkthrough can orient you, but use YouTube Studio’s current values and YouTube’s encoder guidance as authoritative. - Prefer RTMPS when it is available in the current YouTube server options. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder connections. YouTube live encoder settings
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not put it in public screenshots, shared configuration files, logs, or support posts. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it through YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key.
Set OBS output for a sustained stream
Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and the actual VPS capacity. Higher resolution and frame rate demand more encoding and network capacity; do not infer sustained performance from an advertised CPU core count. YouTube’s recommendations for H.264 include these ranges:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular image will look good or that your VPS connection will remain stable. Use CBR (constant bitrate) and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS. YouTube’s resolution, bitrate, and encoder recommendations

Choose a bitrate your instance can sustain, then confirm outbound capacity is greater than the stream’s total bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. A speed test is only a point-in-time measurement: test the actual server path and watch YouTube’s stream health while the intended playlist is running. YouTube streaming tips
Test the broadcast and plan for recovery
- Start with the intended playlist and audio, and verify the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators before treating the event as ready for viewers.
- Watch the outgoing bitrate and CPU load on the VPS during playback, including at loop boundaries. If frames are missed or the encoder struggles, reduce output resolution or frame rate, or use a lower-load source configuration. OBS lists lowering output resolution or scaling sources among its encoding-performance troubleshooting approaches. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
- Test how the setup behaves if OBS exits, the server restarts, or the network connection drops. Plan how you will notice and restart the service; the cited sources do not verify a specific automatic recovery configuration for Contabo.
- If you use hardware encoding, confirm that the actual VPS exposes compatible hardware and drivers and that OBS can use them. OBS documents hardware encoder requirements, but those documents do not attest to the configuration of a particular Contabo instance. OBS hardware encoding
Decide how YouTube archives the stream
A single continuous broadcast intended to last 24 hours crosses YouTube’s archive threshold. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a retained copy, keep a local recording or plan shorter broadcasts rather than relying on the archive of one uninterrupted event. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect to YouTube | Event settings, server address, stream key, or connection | Copy the current details from the selected YouTube Studio event, confirm RTMPS/server settings, and keep the key private. Replace a key that may have been exposed. |
| Unstable stream health or bitrate drops | Sustained VPS upload capacity or chosen bitrate | Observe the actual stream path over time, reduce bitrate if needed, and retain the recommended bandwidth margin rather than relying on a brief speed test. |
| Encoding lag or missed frames | VPS compute capacity, output resolution/frame rate, or unavailable encoder hardware | Reduce output resolution or frame rate and check OBS’s encoding-performance guidance. Verify GPU/driver exposure before selecting a hardware encoder. |
| Black screen, silent audio, or playlist stops at the end | Media source configuration or loop behavior | Inspect the source, audio routing, item order, and loop boundary, then test a full cycle before restarting the live event. |
| Broadcast stops after a process or server failure | Process supervision and recovery plan | Determine how the OBS process will be detected and restarted, and verify the behavior with a controlled test. No Contabo-specific automatic-recovery method is established here. |
| No YouTube archive appears for the full 24-hour event | Continuous stream exceeds the archive threshold | Use local recording or divide the programming into shorter broadcasts if retaining a copy matters. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded playlist that keeps a YouTube channel live without maintaining an OBS desktop on a VPS, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo loops the stream from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain running.
- Every slot uses one flat price at any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

A Contabo VPS gives you a server instance to configure, while OBS handles playlist playback and encoding. You remain responsible for validating performance, monitoring the broadcast, and arranging recovery and recording. The provider’s installation guide and YouTube’s encoder documentation explain parts of the workflow, but they do not establish that a particular VPS plan will run a given OBS scene continuously. An independent guide also describes FFmpeg as another way to loop media, but it is not a validated Contabo procedure. Space Node’s 24/7 livestream guide
