Build your creator website around the action you want visitors to take—follow, subscribe, book, or buy—then choose tools that support your offer and the work of running it. A useful site combines your identity and work with clear offer pages; an online store adds the product, checkout, payments, order handling, and delivery or fulfillment needed to complete a sale.

What an online store needs to do

An online store is more than a product grid. It needs product or service pages, a cart and checkout where relevant, payment handling, order management, and inventory tools when stock is involved. Physical products also need shipping and fulfillment; digital products and services need a clear delivery or booking path. Wix describes these as core store functions, while Squarespace’s store information covers templates, inventory, shipping, orders, payments, and marketing guidance.

Your website can also serve as a home for your story, portfolio, documentary work, and audience relationship. Make the primary action obvious on the home page, and give each offer enough detail for a visitor to understand what it is, who it is for, and what happens after purchase.

Choose what you will offer before choosing a platform

The product determines the capabilities and operating work you need. A creator may sell physical goods, digital downloads, courses, memberships, subscriptions, services, or print-on-demand products—or combine several. These models differ in how customers receive the offer and how you manage orders, stock, bookings, or recurring access.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Physical products: plan for inventory where applicable, shipping rates, packing, fulfillment, and customer questions about delivery.
  • Digital products: explain how and when customers receive files or access, and verify that the platform supports your intended product type.
  • Services: make the service scope, booking or inquiry process, and next steps clear.
  • Courses, memberships, and subscriptions: check that the platform supports the access and recurring-payment workflow you need; do not assume every store feature covers these models.
  • Print-on-demand: verify the integration and fulfillment arrangement, including what work remains yours.

Compare platforms by the work your site must do

There is no evidence-based universal winner for every creator. Start with your must-haves: content and portfolio needs, selling model, payment options in your country, fulfillment workflow, integrations, setup effort, maintenance, and total cost. The descriptions below come from the providers themselves; they are useful starting points, not independent hands-on tests.

Platform What its cited source describes Questions to resolve
Shopify Shopify’s vendor-authored 2026 guide describes a hosted store builder with themes, hosting, payments, order tools, and integrations, aimed at businesses from solo merchants to larger enterprises. Its ratings, feature summaries, and starting prices are Shopify’s own comparison, not independent evaluations. Is ecommerce the main job of the site? Which channels, integrations, and store workflows do you actually need? What are the current plan and processing costs in your country?
Wix Wix describes a visual site builder with product pages, cart, checkout, inventory, payments, shipping, and support for multiple selling models. Wix says its free environment can be used to build and experiment, but a paid Premium plan is needed to accept payments; this is a vendor statement and may change. Does an integrated visual site and store fit your needs? Which features require a paid plan, and does it support your product or service type?
Squarespace Squarespace’s store information describes templates, mobile layouts, inventory, shipping, order management, payments, tax features, and marketing guidance. Its fees documentation distinguishes payment processing charges from platform transaction fees, which vary by plan, product category, country, and rollout. Do its site and store functions fit together for your project? Which fee schedule and payment options apply to your account, country, and product mix?
WooCommerce WooCommerce describes its core as free, open-source ecommerce software for WordPress, with no platform fee or revenue share. You choose hosting, payment processing, and any additional services or features. Is WordPress flexibility worth assembling and maintaining the hosting, payment, and extension stack? What paid services will your store need?

Use current provider pages to confirm capabilities and pricing before deciding. Plan structures, payment availability, and fees can change. A provider’s own comparison should not be treated as an independent assessment.

How to build the site and store: a practical sequence

  1. Define the audience and brand promise. Write down who the site is for, what you make, and the main action it should support: follow, subscribe, book, or buy.
  2. Choose the offer and its delivery path. Decide what you will sell and how a customer receives it. Map the work required for shipping, downloads, bookings, memberships, or other access before selecting tools.
  3. List must-have capabilities, then choose a platform. Include content pages and portfolio presentation as well as store features. Check integrations, payment support in your market, operating effort, maintenance, and likely total cost—not just the advertised subscription.
  4. Set up the site structure. Create a home page, about page, work or portfolio page, offer or product pages, and contact details. Add support and policy pages appropriate to your operation. Use consistent visual identity and accurate descriptions.
  5. Build your listings. Add product or service details, pricing, variants where relevant, and inventory if you track stock. State what is included and how delivery, fulfillment, booking, or access works.
  6. Configure payment and order handling. Connect a payment processor available in your market. Check how orders, customer notifications, refunds, and fulfillment are handled in the tools you select.
  7. Walk through the customer journey before publishing. Run through the full checkout and order path, from product page to confirmation, using the platform’s available preview or test options. This is a practical launch check; it is not a claim that any platform was tested for this article.
  8. Review mobile presentation and customer information. Check that pages, product details, prices, and calls to action are legible on a phone. Make support contact details and relevant policies easy to find. For physical goods, clarify shipping and fulfillment; for digital offers or services, explain delivery or booking.
  9. Publish, promote, and refine. Point your audience to the site through suitable channels such as search, a blog, social media, and email. Monitor what visitors ask and where they encounter friction, then update pages and processes. A launch does not guarantee sales.

What should you budget for?

Calculate the operating cost rather than comparing only headline plan prices. Depending on your setup, account for a site or store subscription, payment processing, platform transaction fees, paid apps or extensions, domain costs, and fulfillment expenses. The mix depends on your platform, country, product type, and chosen services.

Separate processing charges from platform fees

Payment processing charges apply to transactions handled by a processor. A platform transaction fee is a separate charge that may depend on your plan and what you sell. Squarespace’s Help Center, accessed in 2026, lists current-plan commerce transaction fees of Business 3%, Commerce Basic 0%, and Commerce Advanced 0%. For plans rolling out in waves, it lists Basic 2%, Core 0%, Plus 0%, and Advanced 0%; for digital products in that rollout it lists Basic 7%, Core 5%, Plus 1%, and Advanced 0%. These are platform transaction fees for the specified plans and categories, not universal card-processing rates. Availability varies by country and rollout, and separate processing charges apply. Check the live fee documentation and the terms shown for your own account before relying on a figure.

Understand what “free” covers

Wix says users can build and experiment in its free environment, but taking payments requires a paid Premium plan. WooCommerce’s “free” refers to its core software; hosting, payment processing, maintenance, and added features can still cost money. Compare the whole setup you would actually operate.

Keep your creator identity and audience central

A store should support the work, not obscure it. Use the home and about pages to explain the creator or brand, and the portfolio or work page to help visitors understand what you make. Link content to relevant offers without implying that a purchase is required to engage with your work. Keep descriptions, delivery promises, contact details, and policies consistent across the site.
