How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Music Radio Stream with VLC Playlist Repeat

VLC can loop your music playlist, but repeat alone does not send a YouTube-ready livestream. Here is how to prepare the channel, encoder, network, rights, and continuity checks.

VLC can play and repeat a music playlist, but its repeat control alone does not create a YouTube livestream. A continuous broadcast needs both a looping playback source and an encoder feed that YouTube accepts. VLC documents playlist sequencing and network output; YouTube separately documents encoder ingest using a stream URL and key. The official instructions cited here do not establish a complete, supported VLC-to-YouTube setup, so treat the two pieces as separate and test any bridge before relying on it.

What you need for a 24/7 YouTube music stream

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, with live streaming enabled in advance.
  • Music files you are authorized to broadcast on YouTube, in the territories and for any archive you intend to make available.
  • VLC for playlist playback, plus an encoder workflow that delivers a YouTube-compatible feed.
  • A computer and reliable, sustained upload connection for a do-it-yourself setup.

YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before your planned launch. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility instructions describe the current requirements.

Enable YouTube live streaming and prepare the ingest

  1. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming and allow time for first-time activation.
  2. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder workflow you intend to use. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
  4. Use the Live Control Room preview to check the incoming feed before starting the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the ingest workflow.

Set up VLC playlist repeat—but keep playback separate from YouTube ingest

Build the playlist from authorized local files

Add the audio files you have the right to broadcast to a VLC playlist, put them in the intended order, and enable playlist repeat using VLC’s playback controls. Confirm that the playlist advances across track boundaries and returns to the beginning when the last track ends. VLC’s documentation also demonstrates command-line stream-output chains that sequence multiple MP3 inputs with gather and keep output open between tracks with --sout-keep; its VLM examples show sequential playlist inputs. These examples explain playback and output behavior, not a complete YouTube ingest recipe. VLC 3.0 streaming documentation and VLC command-line streaming examples show the distinction.

Do not assume VLC repeat sends a YouTube-ready feed

VLC’s documented playlist examples publish an HTTP stream for receivers on a local network. YouTube’s separate instructions ask for an encoder to send video to YouTube’s stream URL using the stream key. The cited official documentation does not show VLC’s repeat control directly handling that YouTube encoder protocol. Before operating a real channel, establish a tested bridge or encoder input path that accepts the VLC output and sends a compatible feed to YouTube. Verify track changes, the playlist loop, reconnection after a dropped connection, and extended operation; a looping playlist by itself does not guarantee an uninterrupted public stream.

Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings

Use YouTube’s current settings for the resolution and frame rate you select rather than copying one bitrate as a universal value. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Consult the codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific bitrate tables on YouTube’s encoder settings page.

If you use RTMPS, YouTube says the connection encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Use the stream URL and key provided in Live Control Room, and preview the result before going live.

Check bandwidth and continuity before leaving the stream on

The total audio and video bitrate must fit the upload capacity available to the streaming computer. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate; this is platform guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. Run a speed test, then test using audio and moving video similar to the actual programme. Check stream health in Live Control Room and monitor the broadcast after launch. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • Prevent the computer from sleeping while it is responsible for playback and encoding.
  • Plan how to restart VLC and the encoder after an operating-system restart, power loss, network outage, or process crash.
  • Prefer a reliable network connection; a speed test is only a snapshot, so watch stream health during operation.
  • Test playlist-end and loop transitions as well as reconnect behavior rather than assuming repeat will recover a failed encoder or connection.

Clear music rights before broadcasting

YouTube’s terms require stream providers to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Check that your permission covers a live YouTube broadcast, the relevant territories, and any replay or archive you plan to leave available. YouTube’s Terms of Service set out the provider’s responsibility for necessary rights.

Live streams are subject to copyright matching and may be interrupted or terminated. If you have licensed third-party music, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist: YouTube warns that a stream can still be interrupted without allowlisting, even when the content is licensed. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Understand the archive limit for a continuous channel

Do not plan on one uninterrupted 24/7 stream becoming a single, unlimited YouTube archive. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check current Live Control Room behavior before deciding how to handle a continuous broadcast or its replay. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the archive condition.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Live streaming is unavailable in Studio Eligibility requirements are not met, or first-time activation is still processing. Confirm channel verification and live restrictions, then allow up to 24 hours for initial activation.
VLC plays music, but YouTube receives no feed Playlist playback is working, but no YouTube-compatible encoder path is sending the stream. Check that the encoder has YouTube’s stream URL and key and that the tested bridge supplies its input.
Stream health reports instability or drops Available upload bandwidth may be insufficient or inconsistent relative to total stream bitrate. Recheck the selected settings and real upload capacity; leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and monitor Live Control Room.
Playback stops at the end of a track or playlist Repeat or output continuity may not be configured as expected, or the encoder may not handle the transition. Test track changes and the end-of-playlist loop locally, then test the full path to YouTube before relying on it.
A stream containing licensed music is interrupted A rights-holder match may block live use if the channel is not allowlisted, or the licence may not cover the broadcast. Confirm live, territory, and archive permissions with the rights holder and ask about Content ID allowlisting.
Broadcast stops after a computer or network event Sleep, restart, power loss, connection loss, or an encoder crash can stop a local setup. Check power and sleep settings, restore VLC and the encoder, and verify reconnection and restart behavior in a test.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel built around uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a home computer and encoder running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera broadcasting. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
