You can run a continuous YouTube Live broadcast from an Ubuntu VPS by looping media with FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube’s ingest server. You’ll need a verified channel with live streaming enabled, a stable outbound connection, and a process supervisor such as systemd. A restart policy can recover an exited FFmpeg process, but it does not prove that YouTube is receiving healthy video; monitor the Live Control Room and test the full setup before relying on it.
There is no special India-only encoder configuration established for this workflow. Choose a VPS based on sustained upload capacity and its route to YouTube ingest, not simply its advertised port speed, and test from the server you intend to use.
What you need before starting
- An Ubuntu VPS with enough CPU for your chosen encoding settings, disk space for your media and any local recordings, and sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube may permit up to 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; check current account limits in YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Media you have the rights to stream, including applicable music rights.
- FFmpeg installed from an appropriate trusted Ubuntu package source, plus a way to supervise and monitor the process.
No particular India VPS provider, plan price, regional route performance, or special India ingest requirement is established here. Confirm the host’s bandwidth terms and test sustained upload from your actual VPS to YouTube before going live.
1. Enable YouTube Live and get the stream details
- Verify your YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-stream restriction in the last 90 days.
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a live stream. Copy the server URL and stream key provided for that stream into your encoder configuration.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshots, or accessible logs. If it is exposed, regenerate it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration.
YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains channel readiness and connecting an encoder.

2. Prepare the Ubuntu VPS and media
Check the server against the workload
Software encoding uses CPU, while the stream and optional local recording consume outbound bandwidth and disk space. Requirements depend on the media, output resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings. A provider’s headline port speed does not establish sustained throughput to YouTube’s ingest network. Measure from the VPS and confirm the provider’s bandwidth and usage terms.
Keep media in a stable location
Store source videos in a directory that will remain available to the streaming service account. Test that FFmpeg can read and decode each file all the way through. If a playlist contains clips with inconsistent dimensions or frame rates, normalize them as needed before building a continuous sequence. A published example of an FFmpeg-and-systemd workflow illustrates local media looping and playlist preparation, but it is an implementation example, not an official or audited deployment recipe: 24/7 YouTube Stream setup and operations notes.

3. Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
| Setting | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS is supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection to its servers. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are supported in YouTube’s settings guidance. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) is recommended. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| H.264 bitrate | YouTube lists 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps. This is not a universal target: use the applicable YouTube recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate. |
These are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations; consult its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page for the row that matches your output. YouTube also advises that total stream bitrate fit the available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom recommended. Measure the VPS’s actual connection and leave room for variation rather than setting bitrate equal to a provider’s advertised maximum. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Use RTMPS where the encoder and endpoint configuration support it. Keep the actual stream key out of command examples and public configuration files.

4. Loop media and supervise FFmpeg
The basic flow is local video or playlist → FFmpeg input loop → encode and mux → YouTube ingest. Run the process under a dedicated, unprivileged service account. Keep credentials in a restricted configuration file or an appropriate secret mechanism, then configure systemd to start the service on boot and restart it if the process exits.
A systemd restart policy such as Restart=always can relaunch a stopped process, but it cannot by itself detect every failure that matters: FFmpeg might remain running while the ingest connection or video health is impaired. Review service logs after a restart and check the Live Control Room preview, stream-health messages, and the public playback page. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream health before and during a broadcast.

5. Test the complete route before relying on it
- Start with a test stream using the intended media, FFmpeg configuration, stream key, and VPS.
- Confirm in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room that video and audio arrive and that stream health is acceptable.
- Check playback from the viewer-facing page, not only the local FFmpeg process status.
- Observe the stream long enough to catch media decode errors, bandwidth instability, or a restart. If you need to know promptly when it drops, add monitoring or an external alert; systemd alone is not end-to-end monitoring.
6. Plan for archives and DVR limitations
Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24-hour session to create a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording backup when an archive matters. Very long streams can also have limited or unavailable rewind through DVR; see YouTube’s DVR guidance.
If preserving the whole program is important, record locally or plan shorter sessions and verify the archive after each one. Include sufficient disk capacity and ensure the recording process itself is monitored.

7. Check copyright and monetization implications
Use only content for which the channel has the necessary rights, including music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if identified content remains or a strike applies. For licensed third-party material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and its copyright guidance for live streams.
A continuously running loop is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible under its inauthentic-content policy; the policy page notes a clarification dated July 15, 2025. Consider whether the channel’s content offers original value rather than assuming that continuous uptime or looping alone qualifies. See YouTube’s monetization policies.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect server URL or stream key, channel not eligible for live streaming, or connection failure. | Recheck the stream selected in Studio, copy its current URL and key, confirm channel readiness, then inspect FFmpeg logs and the VPS network route. |
| FFmpeg exits or repeatedly restarts | Unreadable media, decode or encode failure, invalid configuration, or insufficient server resources. | Review systemd and FFmpeg logs, verify the media path and complete-file decode, and assess CPU and disk headroom. |
| Service is active but viewers see no healthy video | A running process is not proof of a healthy ingest or playable stream. | Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then test the public playback page. |
| Stream health degrades or drops | Insufficient or unstable outbound capacity, or an upstream route problem. | Measure sustained upload from the VPS, reduce bitrate if needed, preserve the recommended 20% headroom, and retest the actual route. |
| Live broadcast is interrupted or replaced | Potential third-party content match, rights issue, or strike. | Review YouTube’s copyright notices and ensure you have the required rights and any necessary Content ID allowlisting. |
| Expected replay is missing or incomplete | The session exceeded 12 hours or DVR/archive behavior was limited. | Use shorter sessions where practical, keep a local recording backup, and verify each archive. |
