To run a 24/7 YouTube jazz stream with Liquidsoap, build a playlist source, pair its audio with a visual source, encode the combined stream with FFmpeg, and send it to YouTube Live using the channel’s stream key. Liquidsoap can keep the program moving, but continuous playback is not a guarantee of continuous availability: the host, internet connection, music rights, recovery plan, monitoring, and archive all need attention too.
How the Liquidsoap-to-YouTube setup works
Liquidsoap schedules and shapes the radio program. For a YouTube broadcast, its audio must be paired with video; FFmpeg encodes the audiovisual output, and Liquidsoap sends it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. YouTube is the destination and viewing platform, not the playlist scheduler.
This differs from a conventional internet-radio setup, where Liquidsoap might send audio to an Icecast server for listeners using a radio player. Icecast is optional if you also want a separate radio endpoint; it is not a required step in the YouTube path. Liquidsoap’s official examples cover playlist-driven radio and a YouTube Live output pattern using output.youtube.live.rtmp.
Prepare music and YouTube access before configuring the stream
Confirm rights for every recording
Do not treat a YouTube live stream as a workaround for music licensing. You need rights that cover the recordings, the channel, and the territories where the broadcast is available. YouTube Help says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can interrupt or terminate a live broadcast. Some licensed third-party content may require the rights holder to allowlist the channel through Content ID; that is not a substitute for obtaining the necessary rights.

Enable live streaming and collect the ingest details
Verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio before launch. YouTube Help says the channel must have no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select a stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Keep the key secret: it lets someone publish to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the Liquidsoap configuration.
Build the program and add a visual source
Make a playlist from authorized files
Put the recordings you are licensed to broadcast in a dedicated, organized location and make that collection the Liquidsoap playlist source. Check file readability, naming, and playback before leaving the process unattended. Liquidsoap’s playlist examples also show rotation, jingles, and crossfade; use those only if they suit the radio format and your rights.
Decide what should happen if the playlist cannot supply audio. A fallback track or another permitted source can prevent silence, but it should be deliberate and tested. Liquidsoap examples also demonstrate falling back to a video playlist when a live RTMP source is unavailable; that is a different input arrangement, not a requirement for a prerecorded jazz playlist.

Pair audio with a visual
YouTube Live expects an audiovisual stream for this pattern. A static cover image is the simplest visual source; a suitable loop or live visual production is another option. In the Liquidsoap book’s conceptual example, single("image.jpg") supplies an image and source.mux.video pairs video with the audio source. Confirm the exact syntax and behavior against the Liquidsoap version you install rather than copying a fragment across versions unchanged.
Keep the visual source available for the entire broadcast. A static image uses less production effort than moving visuals; adding a loop or more complex visual production adds another component to test and can increase processing needs. Whatever you choose, check that the picture is actually present in YouTube’s preview and does not cover or replace the program audio.
Configure encoding and send the stream to YouTube
Pin the Liquidsoap version and verify FFmpeg support
Liquidsoap’s current homepage, development documentation, and versioned references may describe different releases. Choose and pin an installed version, then check that version’s reference for the YouTube output operator and the FFmpeg capabilities available on your host. The versioned Liquidsoap 2.4.5 reference documents the YouTube RTMP output, default RTMP ingest URL, secret key, encoder, and automatic-start setting. Treat examples from other versions as patterns to validate, not guaranteed drop-in configuration.

The official Liquidsoap example uses an FFmpeg-backed YouTube output, H.264 video, and AAC audio. Its documented output name is output.youtube.live.rtmp. Configure the YouTube ingest URL and stream key, select the encoder settings, and set automatic start behavior as appropriate for the installed version. Do not expose the key in a public repository, shared configuration, screenshot, or log.
Choose a bitrate that fits the picture and connection
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval (maximum 4 seconds). The recommended H.264 video bitrate values include:

Those figures are video bitrates; audio adds to the total outgoing stream bitrate. Use a tested setting suited to the visual quality and your actual upload capacity. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup streams where applicable. For example, add the video and audio bitrates first, then make sure the available upload bandwidth exceeds that total by the recommended margin. A connection that barely meets the encoder target leaves little room for ordinary variation.

Video encoding takes more CPU than audio encoding in Liquidsoap’s FFmpeg guidance. Select resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings your host can sustain continuously, then observe CPU and stream health under those settings before relying on them for an unattended run. The cited guidance does not establish a universal minimum hardware specification.
Test the complete path before calling it 24/7
- Start with a short private or unlisted test. Use the YouTube live control room to check the incoming preview, audio, video, and stream health before making the broadcast public.
- Listen across track transitions. Confirm the playlist advances, crossfades behave as intended if enabled, and fallback material does not create silence or an unexpected change in programming.
- Check the encoded output. Verify the selected resolution and frame rate, CBR behavior, codec, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Test recovery deliberately. Observe what happens if the network drops, the encoder exits, or a source file becomes unavailable. Confirm the process can be restarted or supervised and that the output returns to the intended YouTube stream.
- Monitor after launch. YouTube advises testing encoder output and continuously monitoring quality. Watch the live control room and the host’s CPU, network, and process state; do not assume that a running playlist means viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
Plan for outages, long broadcasts, and archives
A playlist process is not an uptime plan
A 24/7 schedule depends on the host staying available, the network maintaining upload capacity, and the encoding and output processes recovering from failures. Run Liquidsoap on a machine or hosted server with capacity for the chosen video settings, and define supervision or restart behavior for the process. If you need stronger resilience, plan and test a separate recovery or backup arrangement rather than assuming one process makes the channel continuously available. The appropriate host, hardware, and recurring cost depend on the encoding load, bandwidth, recovery requirements, and local recording needs; the official technical guidance does not identify one universally best provider or hardware minimum.
Keep your own recording if a complete archive matters
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube to preserve a complete recording. If you need a full record, configure and test a separate local recording, check available disk space and retention, and make sure the recording continues independently of YouTube’s archive behavior. Size storage for the stream’s bitrate and the period you intend to retain; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a drive type or capacity.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube receives no video: Confirm that a video source is paired with the audio and that the selected output is the video-capable YouTube/FFmpeg path, not audio-only radio output. Check the preview before going public.
- The stream key is rejected or the broadcast does not start: Recheck the ingest URL and key in the Liquidsoap configuration and verify live streaming is enabled for the channel. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in the configuration.
- The stream buffers or reports poor health: Check total audio-plus-video bitrate against upload bandwidth and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the video target if the connection cannot sustain it, then retest.
- Audio goes silent or stops between tracks: Check that playlist files are readable and valid, confirm source progression, and test any fallback behavior. Review the Liquidsoap process output for source or FFmpeg errors.
- The process exits or the host struggles: Inspect CPU use and FFmpeg support for the chosen video settings, then use a supervised restart or adjust the encoding workload. A playlist alone cannot recover a stopped host or failed internet connection.
- A broadcast is interrupted after a rights match: Review YouTube’s live-stream notice and resolve rights or channel allowlisting with the relevant rights holder. Do not restart with the same unaddressed content and assume it will remain live.
- The YouTube archive is incomplete: If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube may not capture it. Use the separate local recording for any complete archive requirement.
