You can use an Indian VPS to send a continuous playlist to YouTube, but the first requirement is not a server: you need permission for every recording and musical work in the stream. Once you have the necessary rights—and have confirmed any YouTube Content ID allowlisting requirements—you can prepare a playlist video, run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS, and send it to YouTube over RTMPS. YouTube’s setup guidance does not require the VPS to be in India.
Clear the music rights before configuring the VPS
A VPS is only the computer that runs your encoder. It does not grant permission to broadcast Malayalam film songs. YouTube’s livestream terms require the person providing live content to have the necessary rights worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants.
For an Indian online stream, check the rights for each sound recording and the underlying musical and literary works. The Copyright Act, 1957 defines “communication to the public” to include making a work or performance available to the public by display or diffusion, whether or not anyone actually sees, hears or enjoys it. That is a statutory definition, not a legal conclusion about a particular channel or playlist. The Copyright Office page reproduces an older crawl of the Act; consult the current consolidated law and a qualified adviser if you need advice about a dispute or commercial operation.
- IPRS licence guidance explains its licensing scope for repertoire it administers, including underlying works. It distinguishes those rights from sound-recording rights administered by other entities.
- PPL India’s tariff guidance concerns its licensing categories. Its licensing FAQ says an on-ground licence does not authorize digital use and directs users seeking digital rights to individual labels.
Do not assume that owning a CD or file, receiving permission to upload a song, or buying a general venue or public-performance licence covers an online livestream. Ask the relevant rightsholders whether your permission covers the specific recordings and works, the territories, continuous live transmission, monetization, and any archived replay. The sources above do not identify who owns the rights to any particular Malayalam film song.

Account for YouTube’s live-content checks
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may trigger a warning and placeholder image; if it continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A licence alone does not guarantee uninterrupted transmission: YouTube says a licensed stream may still be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the content owner’s Content ID allowlist. Confirm the allowlisting process with the rights holder before going live. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues for live streams.
Creator Music is not a workaround for a live playlist. YouTube says its licensing and revenue-share tracks are for long-form videos, not livestreams, and that Creator Music does not currently support licensing for live content. Details: Creator Music usage details and the Creator Music FAQ.

Choose a playlist format and an authorized visual
For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, prepare one continuous video file containing the rights-cleared songs in the intended order. A music playlist can use an authorized still image or other visual, but the image needs its own permission where applicable; a static picture does not clear the music rights. Check the final file from beginning to end for silent gaps, abrupt joins, unintended material and the correct loop point.
If you need songs to be added or reordered while the stream is live, use a playlist-capable encoder workflow instead of treating the single-file command below as a live-editing system. Whichever workflow you choose, test its audio continuity, reconnection behavior, stream-key handling and YouTube stream health before relying on it unattended.

Select an Indian VPS that can sustain the stream
YouTube’s setup documentation does not require an Indian VPS. Location by itself does not establish a reliable route to YouTube’s ingest service, low latency, rights compliance or lower cost. Before paying for a plan, verify the provider’s actual availability in the region and check:
- Sustained outbound bandwidth and monthly traffic or egress limits, including any charges after a quota is reached.
- Whether the selected plan permits your intended use and can run the encoder you choose.
- CPU or hardware-encoding capability if the VPS will encode rather than simply relay an already encoded stream.
- How restarts, failures and monitoring work, and whether you can regain access if the process stops.
- The route and connection stability to YouTube’s ingest service under sustained load.
No particular VPS provider, plan or price is established here, so compare current provider terms rather than choosing on a country label or advertised bandwidth alone.

Set up YouTube Live Control Room and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or manage the livestream using the current options shown for your channel. YouTube’s precise eligibility and interface can vary; follow the Live Control Room prompts.
- Copy the stream key from the stream settings. Treat it like a password: do not post it, include it in screenshots, or paste it into a public script or log. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection where your encoder supports it. RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP. Put the ingest URL and stream key into the encoder’s private configuration, using the values shown by YouTube rather than a URL copied from an unrelated setup.
- Choose a video size and bitrate that the VPS can sustain. YouTube publishes recommendations for H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio over RTMP/RTMPS. The example below uses H.264 and AAC.
Send a prepared playlist file with FFmpeg
This example assumes FFmpeg is installed on the VPS and playlist.mp4 is an already prepared, rights-cleared 1280 × 720 video at 30 frames per second. It re-encodes to H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 720p30 video bitrate, uses stereo AAC audio at YouTube’s recommended audio settings, and sets a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The command loops the file until you stop FFmpeg.
- Install FFmpeg using the package or image supported by your VPS provider. Upload the prepared file to the server and verify that the account running FFmpeg can read it.
- In a private shell session, set
YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URLto the RTMPS ingest URL shown by YouTube andYOUTUBE_STREAM_KEYto the stream key from Live Control Room. Avoid saving the key in a public script, shared shell history or world-readable file. - Start the encoder with the following template, replacing the input filename if needed:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i playlist.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY" - Open the stream preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that both video and audio are present, check stream health, and only start the public broadcast when the preview and rights arrangements are ready.
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps; for 1080p at 30 fps, they are 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. The recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees for every server route or viewer. With the example’s 8 Mbps video plus audio, reserve more than the encoded total for steady outbound capacity. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the stream bitrate in available upload bandwidth. That is guidance, not a performance guarantee; if you run primary and backup streams simultaneously, account for both streams’ traffic. Check the VPS’s sustained egress and traffic limits, not just a short speed test. YouTube’s streaming tips cover its network guidance.
Test the stream and troubleshoot common failures
Before leaving a continuous stream unattended, test with representative audio and movement, preview it in Live Control Room, and monitor stream health. Use the table to identify where to look first.

YouTube says a channel restricted from live streaming cannot use another channel to circumvent an active restriction. Review its restriction guidance; do not use another account to bypass an enforcement action.
