Verify and enable live streaming in advance, test the entire signal path, leave upload headroom, arrange monitoring and recovery, and clear the rights to every song and visual.
What a 24/7 OBS worship stream requires
OBS sends a live audio-and-video feed from your computer to YouTube. For continuous operation, that means the computer running OBS, the audio and video sources, and a working upload connection all need to keep functioning. A worship stream might use a live camera and microphones, a prepared visual loop with audio, or a mix; choose the format that matches your programme and the rights you hold.
Before planning a launch, check that the channel is verified, eligible for live streaming, and has not had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave enablement until the day of the event.
Set up the YouTube event and connect OBS
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. In YouTube Studio, follow the current live-streaming enablement flow and allow for the first activation to take up to 24 hours. Confirm there is no live-streaming restriction on the channel.
- Create or schedule an encoder event. In YouTube Studio, create the live stream and select encoder streaming. Check the event’s visibility, title, description, and scheduled start time before sharing its watch page.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In the event’s stream settings, copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s guidance is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it in a description, screenshot, or public chat.
- Build the OBS scene. Add the actual programme sources—such as a camera, microphone, playback source, or cleared visual loop—and check that the intended audio is routed to the stream. Make sure the scene does not depend on a source that will disappear when the operator leaves.
- Test before the public broadcast. Run a suitable test event, check the OBS output and YouTube Studio preview, listen for clean and correctly routed audio, and verify that the watch page plays on a phone as well as a computer. Confirm the public event shows the intended picture and sound before announcing it as live.
Choose OBS output settings and protect upload capacity
There is no single safe bitrate or resolution for every computer, camera, programme, and connection. Set OBS’s video and audio output to a format supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance and suitable for the source material and measured upload capacity. Avoid choosing settings solely because they are the maximum available: a higher bitrate needs more sustained upstream bandwidth and leaves less tolerance for connection variation.

- Measure the actual upload connection. Check outbound capacity at the location and, if possible, at times when the stream will run. A result from a quiet moment does not guarantee the same capacity during a busy period.
- Leave headroom. YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Other people and devices using the same connection reduce what is available to OBS.
- Prefer a stable connection where feasible. A wired connection can avoid some local wireless variability, but it does not prevent an ISP outage or upstream congestion. YouTube warns that connection disruptions can break a stream.
- Check the whole path. Confirm that the computer can keep encoding, the audio source remains active, and the router and connection are stable. A UPS may help keep local equipment running through some short power interruptions, but it cannot prevent an ISP outage. Choose any backup power equipment for the actual load and desired runtime; no universal capacity is established here.
Start early and monitor the broadcast
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder event at least two hours before it starts and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that time to catch connection, key, audio, or scene problems while there is still time to fix them.
- Start the OBS encoder early enough for YouTube Studio to receive the signal.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event. If the preview is wrong or absent, do not assume viewers will receive a good feed.
- Start the event at the planned time, then open the watch page and confirm playback and sound, including on a phone.
- Assign someone to check the stream during the broadcast. Watch for a frozen picture, silent or distorted audio, a disconnect, or a warning in Studio. For a continuous stream, specify who is responsible and how they will contact the person able to intervene.
- Have a recovery procedure: identify who can inspect the encoder and connection, restart a failed source or OBS if needed, and confirm the feed has returned in Studio. A long-running broadcast should not rely on nobody noticing a failure.
Plan sessions and replays instead of assuming one 24-hour archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single 24-hour operation will be saved as one complete replay. Decide in advance whether you need a replay, how you will handle the event duration, and whether local recording is part of your plan. Check the current controls in YouTube Studio before launch; do not promise viewers that the entire day will be available afterward unless you have verified the resulting archive.

One continuous event avoids a planned break between sessions, but it complicates archive expectations and recovery. Planned shorter sessions make it easier to create distinct events and work within the documented under-12-hour automatic archive behavior, but require someone to manage the transitions. Choose based on the programme and replay need, not on an assumption that YouTube guarantees a complete 24-hour recording.
Clear music and visual rights before going live
A worship context does not by itself grant permission to stream a song or recording. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use, including music rights. YouTube also scans live broadcasts for third-party content; a match can replace the picture, interrupt the stream, or terminate it.

- Confirm rights for each composition, arrangement, recording, performance, image, and video included in the programme. A hymn or worship song may have a separate copyrighted arrangement or recording.
- If you have a licence for third-party music, check whether the rights owner needs to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A licence alone may not prevent an automated interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- Keep records of permissions and use material only within the scope those permissions allow. The legal status of a specific song, recording, or Indian licence depends on the material and licence; do not assume all devotional music is cleared.
- Prepare a rights-cleared fallback visual and audio plan. If YouTube flags material, continuing to transmit the same content may not resolve the interruption.
