To run science lessons continuously on YouTube, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play a playlist of local lesson files with Loop Playlist enabled. You need VLC installed, a verified channel eligible to stream, rights to every video and audio track, and a plan to monitor the computer, power, network, and stream health. This setup loops files on your computer; it does not ingest a YouTube-hosted playlist URL.
What you need before setting up a 24/7 stream
- A YouTube channel that can stream live: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before your intended launch. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube live streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
- OBS Studio and VLC: OBS provides the VLC Video source for a playlist of media files. Install VLC before configuring the source; OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources.
- Lesson files and rights: Have the media files ready in the order you want them played, and confirm you have the necessary rights to stream each lesson and its audio.
- A reliable operating setup: The computer running OBS, its power supply, and its network connection must remain available. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream’s bitrate total, but shared network use or connection disruptions can still interrupt a broadcast. See YouTube streaming tips.
How to set up OBS to stream a repeating playlist
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio in advance. Check the channel’s verification and restriction status. If this is the first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for the feature to become available.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube describes the key as a password and address for the broadcast: keep it private, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. Follow Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
- Install VLC, then open OBS. Make sure the VLC installation matches OBS’s architecture. If OBS does not offer its VLC Video source, check that VLC is installed and that both applications are 64-bit or both are 32-bit as applicable.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS Sources panel, choose + and select VLC Video. Add the lesson files to the source’s playlist and arrange them in the intended sequence. OBS’s documented method is a playlist of media files, not a YouTube playlist URL.
- Enable Loop Playlist. In the VLC Video source settings, turn on Loop Playlist. Check that the files play in order and that the playlist starts again after its final item.
- Configure the encoder connection. In OBS stream settings, select the custom streaming service option if needed, then enter the YouTube server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Do not share screenshots or settings exports that reveal the key.
- Test the complete path before launch. Start the encoder and inspect the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm picture, audio, playlist order, and looping; monitor stream health and audio/video quality. Correct any playback or connection issue before making the scheduled stream public or starting the intended broadcast.
- Start the stream and monitor it. For a continuous operation, arrange monitoring for OBS, computer and power status, network interruptions, and YouTube’s stream health. The cited guidance does not specify a guaranteed uptime or a particular computer specification for this workload.
Can I stream a YouTube playlist 24/7?
The documented OBS method in this guide plays a playlist of media files through VLC Video; it does not establish direct ingestion of a playlist hosted on YouTube. Downloading or reusing videos does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast them. Use lesson files you are authorized to stream, and test the playback and loop behavior in OBS before going live.
Copyright and lesson audio matter
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may cause the stream to be replaced by a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated. Even if you have a licence for third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review Copyright issues with live streams and YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
YouTube’s terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Clear rights for the lesson footage, images, music, narration, and any other included material before putting it into the playlist.

Plan around interruptions and archived replays
A 24/7 broadcast depends on the encoder computer, power, network, OBS, and the YouTube connection continuing to work. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the combined bitrate, but that margin does not prevent every interruption, particularly when other devices share the connection. Have someone check stream health and a recovery procedure for failures; the cited YouTube guidance does not promise continuous uptime or specify hardware requirements for a particular lesson resolution.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one stream running for 24 hours will create a single complete replay on the basis of that guidance. If an archive matters, verify current archive limits and plan stream boundaries accordingly. Test and verify any local recording separately. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live streaming tips.

OBS software or a hardware encoder?
YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders and maintains a verified encoder list. For a playlist of lesson files, OBS is a practical software starting point. A hardware encoder is an optional route if you have a specific need for dedicated encoding or a supported unattended setup; before buying, verify that the model supports your files and destination, and check its operating requirements and support. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a particular hardware model or specification for every creator’s resolution, duration, or network.
