First enable YouTube Live, clear the rights for each recording, configure a supported ingest profile, rehearse privately, and plan how the stream will be monitored and restarted.
What a 24/7 FFmpeg stream involves
FFmpeg reads a media source, encodes or passes through its audio and video, and publishes the result to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. To repeat a local file indefinitely, FFmpeg provides -stream_loop -1. The process must remain running, and its computer, power, and internet connection must remain available. YouTube’s encoder workflow and FFmpeg’s documented input-reconnect options do not by themselves guarantee a continuously recovered RTMP(S) output.
A music-first broadcast does not need a high video resolution to improve its sound. Choose a resolution and frame rate your system and connection can sustain; test the actual audio, visual transitions, and stream health before making the broadcast public.
Prepare the channel and recording rights
Enable YouTube Live in advance
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so complete this before scheduling a broadcast. In Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and private stream key for your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in public screenshots, or expose it in a shared command or log.

Check permission for every Gurbani recording
Devotional subject matter does not automatically make a particular performance or recording free to broadcast. Check the rights for the sound recording and composition used, and obtain or confirm permission for the intended live use. YouTube for Artists advises: “If you’re planning on using copyright-protected music during your live stream, we recommend coordinating with your label or distributor to avoid any issues, such as copyright strikes.” Coordinate with the relevant label or distributor when applicable; keep a record of the permissions or license terms for each track.
Rights clearance and a channel’s eligibility for monetization are separate questions. The sources available here do not establish the rights status of any specific Gurbani recording or determine whether a particular channel or stream qualifies for monetization. Do not assume that a track is cleared merely because it is religious, traditional, or already online.

Choose an ingest profile that fits your source and connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video at up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward H.264 starting profile, YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates are shown below. These are encoder-to-YouTube ingest recommendations, not guaranteed viewer playback bitrates. YouTube has separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265.
| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended ingest bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
Use constant bitrate (CBR). For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. At 30 fps, a two-second keyframe interval corresponds to a 60-frame GOP; that is the arithmetic equivalent of the interval, not a different platform requirement. Choose a bitrate from the row matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then verify that your sustained upload connection has enough headroom for stable publishing.

- Prefer an output your setup can sustain. A stable lower-resolution stream is more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly buffers or disconnects.
- Check the source before deciding to stream-copy. Passing through a file without re-encoding only makes sense if its codecs, resolution, frame rate, timestamps, and audio suit the selected YouTube ingest profile. Otherwise, configure encoding and test the output.
- Inspect the transitions. A loop can have an abrupt visual cut, silence, a click, or a gap where the file ends and starts again. Listen to and watch a complete loop during rehearsal.
Build and rehearse the FFmpeg workflow
There is no single safe full command for every setup: the correct input arguments depend on whether you have one combined video file, separate audio and video, a playlist, or an HTTP feed, and on your FFmpeg build and chosen output profile. The essential local-file loop option is -stream_loop -1, placed before the input it should repeat. Construct the rest of the command for your actual source, chosen encoder settings, and YouTube RTMPS destination rather than copying an unrelated command with mismatched codecs or timestamps.
- Prepare the source. Confirm the media files play correctly, the audio is continuous, and the video or still-image treatment is appropriate for the broadcast. Arrange the playlist or file order you intend to repeat.
- Set the loop for the relevant input. For a local media input, use FFmpeg’s documented
-stream_loop -1option so the input repeats indefinitely. If there are separate inputs, make sure the loop applies to the intended one or ones. - Set the output profile. Choose the video codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR target bitrate, two-second keyframe interval, and supported audio settings. Use the H.264 examples above only when they match your chosen output.
- Use YouTube’s stream destination. Configure the encoder with the server URL and private key shown for the selected stream in Live Control Room, preferably using the RTMPS destination. Keep credentials out of public materials and access-controlled logs.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Start FFmpeg, wait for YouTube’s preview, and inspect stream health. Confirm that picture, audio level, sync, and loop transitions behave as intended before making the stream public.
- Monitor and document recovery. Keep FFmpeg output and relevant system/network logs available to the operator. Define who checks the stream, how they will detect a stopped process or lost connection, and how they will restart it and confirm YouTube receives the signal again.
FFmpeg’s -re option reads input at its native frame rate. FFmpeg cautions against using low read rates with actual capture devices or live streams because packet loss can result. It is not a general fix for a file loop, dropped publishing connection, or unstable network.

Plan for disconnections, restarts, and archives
Do not mistake HTTP input reconnect for YouTube output recovery
FFmpeg documents reconnect options such as reconnect, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_at_eof for HTTP protocol behavior on inputs. They may matter when the source is an HTTP feed, but they are not a general switch that repairs a failed RTMP(S) publishing connection to YouTube. Design and test output recovery for the actual encoder and network path; do not treat an option intended for HTTP input as proof that the live broadcast will resume automatically.
Use supervision and a tested restart procedure
For an unattended installation, plan process supervision, power and network reliability, logs or alerts, and an operator response. Test what happens when the encoder exits, the source ends, or the network drops, and verify the stream is back in YouTube preview after a restart. The reviewed platform guidance does not promise a particular uptime or prescribe one universal 24/7 FFmpeg configuration. Computer CPU, memory, storage, and thermal requirements also depend on the selected source and encoding workload; choose hardware after settling the profile and rehearse at the expected load.

Decide how to handle long broadcasts and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will become one complete automatic archive, nor does it prescribe a segmentation method for a perpetual series. If you need a complete recording, plan a separate recording or broadcast-segmentation workflow and verify the resulting archives rather than relying on an assumed full-length automatic archive.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | Live is not enabled yet, the wrong stream was selected, or the server URL or key is incorrect. | Confirm channel eligibility and enablement, select the intended stream in Live Control Room, and verify the encoder destination and private key. |
| Preview appears, then publishing stops | Encoder process exit, power or network loss, or a publishing connection failure. | Check FFmpeg and system logs, restore the underlying power/network issue, restart the process using the tested procedure, and confirm the preview returns. |
| Picture stutters or stream health degrades | Output bitrate or encoding workload exceeds what the connection or computer sustains. | Reduce output demands, select the matching recommended profile, check sustained upload capacity, and rehearse again under expected conditions. |
| No audio, distorted sound, or audio/video mismatch | Unsupported or unsuitable audio settings, a source problem, or timestamp/encoding mismatch. | Check the source and encoder’s supported audio configuration; test AAC or MP3 with the recommended stereo profile and inspect a full loop. |
| The loop ends, skips, or has a gap | The loop option was not applied to the correct input, or the playlist/source transition itself is discontinuous. | Confirm -stream_loop -1 is attached to the intended local input and watch/listen through the boundary in rehearsal. |
| The reconnect option does not restore a YouTube stream | The option being used applies to HTTP input behavior rather than RTMP(S) output recovery. | Use a tested publishing-process restart/recovery design and verify the actual YouTube preview after recovery. |
| Copyright claim or strike concern | A recording or composition may not be cleared for the intended live use. | Pause use of the disputed recording until rights are confirmed; contact the applicable rights-holder, label, or distributor. |
