To use it, enable Replay Buffer in Settings > Output, choose a duration your computer can handle, set a save hotkey in Settings > Hotkeys, and test it while streaming. For a continuous Indian music channel, plan separately for full-show recording and confirm you have the necessary music rights for live use.
What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do
Replay Buffer holds recent video in memory so you can save a clip after a moment has happened. It is useful for capturing a song transition, a broadcast issue, or another short segment without continuously saving every second as a separate clip. The saved clip is a local file on the computer running OBS.
It is not the stream itself: turning on Replay Buffer does not start or sustain a YouTube broadcast. Nor should it be treated as a complete recording of a 24/7 programme. If you need a full archive, arrange and verify a separate local recording or other capture workflow.
Configure Replay Buffer in OBS
- Enable the buffer. In OBS, open Settings > Output and enable Replay Buffer. Choose a duration based on the length of moment you may want to recover and the resources available on this specific computer. OBS does not establish one universally suitable duration; test the installed version and your stream setup.
- Set the save hotkey. Open Settings > Hotkeys, find Save Replay Buffer, and assign a combination unlikely to conflict with another application or control. OBS also documents hotkeys for starting and stopping replay buffers. Test the save command during a private or unlisted test broadcast before relying on it live.
- Choose and check local storage. Set a recording path in OBS and confirm that the destination has enough free space for the clips and any separate continuous recordings you intend to retain. Replay clips and a full local archive are different storage needs. Capacity depends on your output settings and retention plan, so calculate it from your own files rather than assuming a fixed requirement.
- Test while streaming. Start a test stream and use the hotkey. Check that the intended recent segment is saved, the file appears in the chosen location, audio is present, and OBS and YouTube report healthy performance. Watch encoder load and dropped frames while the buffer and stream run together; a setting that works while idle may behave differently under broadcast load.
Choose settings around the computer and the clip
There is no universal Replay Buffer duration, encoder, bitrate, resolution, or storage capacity that can be responsibly prescribed without knowing the computer, connection, desired clip length, and output settings. Make the choices in this order:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Clip length: retain enough recent material to cover the event you want to capture, without choosing a longer buffer just because the option is available.
- System load: test OBS with the actual stream and other recording tasks active. OBS notes that recording quality options other than Same as stream, or using a separate encoder, can consume additional system resources.
- Storage and retention: estimate file sizes from your own output and decide how long clips and full recordings need to remain available. A local SSD is optional, not an OBS requirement.
- Upload capacity and quality: select stream settings the internet connection can sustain reliably, then test them. YouTube recommends checking stream quality rather than assuming a nominal setting will work on every connection.
OBS recommends MKV for standard recordings because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. That is guidance for standard recordings; do not assume every Replay Buffer configuration behaves identically. Confirm the format and recovery behavior in your own OBS setup.
Plan the 24/7 archive separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a complete recording. If preserving the programme matters, run a separate local recording or another verified capture arrangement, check that files are being created, and plan storage and retention before the broadcast.

Use a test broadcast to check both the public stream and the local files: confirm the stream appears as expected, the audio and video stay in sync, the Replay Buffer hotkey saves the intended section, and any full recording is readable. Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health during the real broadcast as well.
Check music rights before streaming Indian music
YouTube requires you to have the necessary rights for music in live content. Its livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; if a match remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license by itself may not prevent interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID.

For a channel based in India, the applicable rights still depend on the particular catalogue, territories, and intended uses, including live broadcast and any archive. The platform guidance does not establish which Indian licenses a specific channel needs. Confirm live and archive permissions with the relevant rights owners or qualified counsel, and ask about allowlisting where applicable.
YouTube identifies music and sound effects in its Audio Library as copyright-safe for YouTube. For an individual track marked with a Creative Commons license that requires attribution, include the specified credit in the video description. Check the track’s terms and its suitability for your intended live use; do not assume that a label or playlist description covers every right you need.

Common problems and fixes
- The hotkey saves nothing: confirm Replay Buffer is enabled and running, verify the assigned command under Settings > Hotkeys, and check the configured recording location and free space. Re-test with a short private or unlisted stream.
- The clip is shorter or different than expected: check the selected buffer duration and press the save hotkey only after enough of the intended segment has entered the buffer. Test the timing before the live programme.
- Streaming becomes unstable when recording: test encoder load and dropped frames with both tasks active. Revisit the buffer duration and recording quality; OBS notes that settings other than Same as stream or a separate encoder can add resource use.
- The stream is interrupted over music: do not treat a license as a guarantee against Content ID interruption. Check the rights for the material, contact the rights owner about channel allowlisting where relevant, and review YouTube’s notice before restarting.
- No complete YouTube archive appears: a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a separate, verified full-recording arrangement when a complete archive is required.
Or let it run in the cloud
Replay Buffer remains a local clipping feature, so it does not solve the separate problem of keeping a computer and connection at home running for a 24/7 YouTube channel. StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the video as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not camera feeds, and streams to YouTube. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
