How to Run a 24/7 Lofi Radio Stream on YouTube with OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a continuous lofi radio stream on YouTube with OBS Studio by building a scene with your music and visuals, sending OBS’s encoder feed to YouTube, and keeping the computer and internet connection running. YouTube can represent a 24/7 broadcast, but OBS on a local computer is not self-recovering: power, sleep settings, software updates, a crash, or a network outage can interrupt it.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time access activation may take 24 hours, so enable it before launch. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance has the current requirements.
  • OBS Studio installed on a computer that can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate while running your scene.
  • A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the encoder bitrate plus headroom for normal variation.
  • Music and visuals you are authorized to use for the live stream, rebroadcast, and any planned archive or on-demand playback.
  • A plan for keeping the computer awake, maintaining the connection, and recovering if OBS or the machine stops.

No universal computer specification or bitrate fits every setup. Choose settings based on your output quality, encoder, scene complexity, hardware, and upload capacity.

Clear the music and visuals before building the channel

For each music track, confirm that the license covers YouTube livestreaming, rebroadcasting, and audio/video on demand if you intend to archive or republish the show. Check applicable territory, term, and monetization conditions, and keep the license terms, track list, and proof of permission. A label such as “copyright free” or “royalty free,” or crediting the artist, does not by itself establish that these uses are permitted. Google’s live-production guidance advises securing rights for the stream and its on-demand uses.

Use an original or properly licensed illustration, animation, or visual loop. Match the source to your OBS canvas and inspect the preview for unwanted cropping or black bars. Check the finished scene for loop seams, unintended silence, clipping, and frozen visuals before you go public.

Configure the YouTube broadcast and OBS

  1. Enable live access early. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup flow for your channel and complete any requested verification. First-time activation can take 24 hours; do not leave this until launch day.
  2. Create or select the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or choose the stream/broadcast. Set its title, description, visibility, and other channel settings. A basic OBS setup uses Studio controls; the YouTube API’s separate liveStream and liveBroadcast resources are concepts for integrations, not steps a typical creator needs to implement.
  3. Copy the matching stream key. Copy the key for the selected YouTube stream and enter it in OBS’s YouTube streaming configuration. Confirm you have not paired the key with a different broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it. YouTube’s production guidance notes that a key mismatch can prevent the encoder feed from starting.
  4. Build the OBS scene. Add the lofi audio source and visual loop, then check that both appear and play in the OBS preview. Keep the scene simple enough for the computer to encode reliably.
  5. Set video and output settings. Choose a 16:9 canvas and output when appropriate for your artwork and YouTube presentation; this helps avoid black bars. Select 30 or 60 fps based on the motion in your visuals and what the computer can encode continuously. Choose an encoder and bitrate using the current YouTube recommendations for your resolution and frame rate, then ensure the upload connection can sustain that bitrate with headroom. The OBS Project setup guide points to YouTube’s bitrate recommendations; these are settings to match to your workload, not one universal number.
  6. Start the encoder and verify the feed. Start streaming in OBS. In the Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and status, then take the broadcast live if that workflow requires a separate confirmation. Check the viewer-facing output and listen for audio there; an OBS preview alone does not prove the YouTube broadcast is healthy.
  7. Rehearse privately. Before announcing the stream, run a private or unlisted technical rehearsal. Check audio level, clipping, visual motion, loop transitions, dropped frames, privacy, and any rights or Content ID notices. A clean test reduces avoidable problems but cannot guarantee that a later stream will be uninterrupted or free of claims.

Keep a local OBS stream running

A 24/7 broadcast in YouTube’s platform model does not keep your encoder alive. With a local OBS workflow, the computer must remain powered on and awake, OBS must keep running, source files and audio devices must remain available, and the upload connection must stay usable. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a continuous incoming stream that can support successive broadcast events; that platform capability does not prevent a local computer or connection from failing.

  • Disable sleep and hibernation for the streaming machine, and test the setting rather than assuming it will persist.
  • Check how operating-system updates and scheduled restarts behave. Do not let an update unexpectedly shut down OBS during a broadcast.
  • Test OBS reconnection after a brief network interruption and confirm that the correct scene and stream key remain selected after a restart.
  • Keep the media files available locally or on reliable storage and verify that playback loops as expected.
  • Decide who will notice an interruption and what they will do. Automation or a watchdog may help, but the cited official guidance does not prescribe a particular restart method.

Do not claim uninterrupted operation without measuring it. The RadioTech Studio discussion of desktop OBS and VPS/FFmpeg is third-party operational context, not YouTube policy or an independently verified performance comparison: RadioTech Studio’s continuous radio setup guide.

Plan for archives and YouTube rules

YouTube’s 2025 live-production guide says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” It advises creators to record streams longer than 12 hours themselves for manual upload. A 24/7 stream therefore should not be treated as one dependable, complete saved video. If you need an archive, plan local recording and file splitting, and make sure the music permissions also cover those recordings and uploads. See Google’s live-production guidance.

Live content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube may remove or restrict streams, and live-streaming restrictions can affect the channel’s eligibility. Review YouTube’s live-streaming rules and eligibility guidance before launch.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

What you see Likely cause What to check
OBS says it is streaming, but YouTube has no incoming feed Wrong or mismatched stream key, or the selected YouTube stream is not the one configured in OBS In Studio, confirm the selected broadcast and copy its stream key again. Enter it in OBS, then restart the encoder feed.
YouTube receives a feed, but the broadcast is not public The feed is still waiting for the Live Control Room workflow or the broadcast visibility is not public Check the broadcast’s visibility and follow the Studio prompt to take it live.
The stream goes offline after a period of inactivity The host went to sleep, OBS stopped, the machine restarted, or the connection failed Check power and sleep settings, update/restart behavior, OBS status, and the upload connection. Rehearse recovery before relying on unattended operation.
Viewers report silence or distorted audio The media source stopped, the scene uses the wrong source, or audio levels are too low or clipping Monitor the YouTube output, confirm the intended source is playing, and adjust levels before restarting or changing the scene.
Black bars or cropped artwork appear The art’s aspect ratio does not match the OBS canvas or output Check the source dimensions and 16:9 canvas/output choice; adjust the source transform and verify the YouTube preview.
Dropped frames or unstable quality The encoder or upload connection cannot sustain the selected output settings Review OBS’s dropped-frame and encoder indicators. Reduce output demands or bitrate in line with YouTube’s current recommendations and the connection’s sustainable capacity.
A rights or Content ID notice appears A track or visual has triggered a claim or the permission does not cover the use Review the notice and the actual license terms. Do not assume attribution or a “copyright free” label authorizes live, rebroadcast, or archive use.
