In OBS, add a VLC Video source, load the files, and enable Loop Playlist. A YouTube playlist by itself is only a playback queue; it does not create a live broadcast.
Choose how the videos should rotate
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a list of local video files in order or shuffle them, then restart the list when it reaches the end. The OBS Project documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.
- Fixed order: Leave Shuffle Playlist off. The files play in the order shown in the source’s playlist.
- Randomized order: Turn Shuffle Playlist on. Use this when a changing sequence is preferable to a predictable rotation.
- One video: For a single file, use OBS’s Media Source and its separate Loop control. This is distinct from the VLC Video source’s Loop Playlist setting.
Set up the looping playlist in OBS
- Open OBS and choose or create the scene that will carry the stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a VLC Video source. Name it so it is easy to identify, then confirm.
- In the source properties, add the local video files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want if using a fixed sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the order randomized.
- Confirm the source and check the OBS preview. Play the playlist long enough to verify that the video and audio behave as expected before relying on it for a live broadcast.
OBS documents a visibility behavior that matters when scenes change: by default, playback stops when the source is not visible and restarts when it becomes visible. If the playlist appears to restart unexpectedly, check whether its scene or source was hidden, or whether a scene transition made it invisible.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
You need live streaming enabled on your channel and a stream configured in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live streaming tips say the channel must be verified and have no recent restrictions. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.

- In YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream details. If you use a custom server URL, enter YouTube’s server URL along with the stream key.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube uses it to identify where the encoder sends the feed and to accept the incoming stream.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room, confirm that video and audio are correct, and then start the broadcast from YouTube if the control room requires that final step.
Exact labels can vary with OBS versions and YouTube’s interface, but the required connection details are the YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Use settings and network capacity that suit the stream
There is no single resolution or bitrate that fits every source and upload connection. Choose an output your computer can encode and your internet connection can sustain, then test the actual feed in YouTube’s preview. YouTube’s current encoder guide recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. - Upload headroom: YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the total bitrate of the stream. For example, add that headroom to the combined video and audio bitrate, rather than matching your upload speed exactly to the video bitrate.
- Test before launch: Start a test stream and inspect playback and audio in the Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; its Streaming tips cover this operational guidance.
- Monitor operation: Keep an eye on stream health and check that both picture and sound remain present. A looping playlist does not protect against a stopped computer, encoder problem, or lost network connection.
Plan for replays separately from continuous streaming
A 24/7 broadcast and a complete replay archive are different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If you need a dependable replay, plan shorter broadcast sessions or maintain a suitable separate recording workflow rather than assuming a day-long live stream will become one complete archive. Choose local playback or cloud playout
With OBS, playback runs on your computer, so the computer, encoder, and network connection must remain available for the broadcast to continue. YouTube also lists software and hardware encoders, as well as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded streaming, in its encoder guidance. A hardware encoder is optional; OBS provides a software route.

Whichever approach you choose, only stream videos you have the rights to broadcast. A video appearing in a YouTube playlist does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it, and these setup steps do not determine the copyright status of your files.
