Yes, you can rewind some live Twitch streams. Twitch’s feature is called Stream Rewind: on a participating channel, eligible viewers can scrub back in the live player, then select Live to catch up. It is not available on every channel or to every viewer; if you cannot access it, the channel’s saved VOD may be the alternative.
How to rewind a live Twitch stream
- Open the channel’s live stream in Twitch’s web player.
- Move your cursor over the video to reveal the player controls.
- Drag the seek bar backward to the point you want to watch.
- Press play if playback is paused.
- Select Live in the player when you want to return to the current broadcast.
Stream Rewind lets you watch an earlier point while the broadcast is still live. It does not rewind chat: messages continue in real time, so they may refer to events you have not seen yet. Twitch’s Stream Rewind help page documents the feature and its controls.
Why the rewind bar may be missing
Stream Rewind requires both an eligible channel and an eligible viewer. Twitch says only Affiliates and Partners can enable it. Viewer access is for qualifying channel subscribers who receive the relevant ad-free viewing benefit, or Twitch Turbo subscribers. The streamer must also enable the feature and its required VOD settings. Paying for Turbo or a channel subscription does not guarantee rewind on every broadcast.

- The channel is not eligible: it must be an Affiliate or Partner.
- The streamer has not enabled it: viewers cannot turn Stream Rewind on themselves.
- Your account does not qualify: check the subscriber or Turbo requirements on Twitch’s official eligibility page.
- The stream is excluded: Stream Rewind is unavailable in the DJ category and for DJ Program streams.
- The seek bar is hidden or covered: reveal the player controls. If an extension overlaps the bar, open player settings and choose Show Seek Bar if that option appears.
- The streamer changed settings after going live: Twitch says channel-side changes take effect starting with the next stream.
- You are using a different client: Twitch’s instructions describe the web player. Mobile controls can vary, so do not assume the same procedure is available in every app version.
Streamer setup: enable Stream Rewind
Eligible streamers can enable the feature in Creator Dashboard:

- Open Creator Dashboard.
- Go to Settings → Stream.
- Scroll to VOD Settings.
- Turn on Store past broadcasts and Always publish VODs.
- Enable Stream Rewind in the VOD options.
These settings apply starting with the next stream, not necessarily one already in progress. Disabling the required VOD settings or Stream Rewind removes the feature from subsequent broadcasts. See Twitch’s Stream Rewind setup instructions for current details.
If live rewind is unavailable, watch the VOD
A VOD is a recording of a past live stream, not the same thing as rewinding the live player. To look for one, open the streamer’s channel, select Videos, then choose Past Broadcasts, Recent Broadcasts, or the equivalent video-library label shown in the current interface. Open the recording and use its timeline to find the missed section.

Not every broadcast will be available as a VOD. The streamer must have storage and publishing configured, and Twitch’s retention rules mean recordings are not necessarily kept indefinitely. If the VOD is missing, it may not have been saved, may not be published, or may have expired. Twitch explains the options and limitations in its VOD help page.

On mobile, if you do not see live rewind controls, try the channel’s Videos area and open a VOD instead. The precise mobile experience may vary by app version and account access.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Move the cursor over the video to reveal its controls.
- Check whether the seek bar is hidden in player settings; choose Show Seek Bar if available.
- Refresh the page and check again.
- If an extension overlaps the player controls, disable it temporarily or use a clean browser session.
- Confirm that the channel and your account meet Stream Rewind requirements, and that the broadcast is not in the excluded DJ category.
- If rewind is still unavailable, open the channel’s Videos tab and check for a VOD.
