To restart a YouTube Live stream after FFmpeg exits, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor configured to launch it again after an unexpected exit. FFmpeg’s reconnect options may help with certain connection interruptions while FFmpeg is still running, but they do not restart a process that has terminated.
Understand what needs to restart
There are two separate failure layers:
- Connection recovery: FFmpeg may retry certain HTTP input connections while its process remains alive. The FFmpeg HTTP protocol documents options such as
reconnect,reconnect_at_eof,reconnect_on_network_error, and retry-delay controls. Their availability and behavior can vary by installed FFmpeg version; check that version’s documentation. - Process recovery: If FFmpeg exits, something outside FFmpeg must start a new process. Configure a service manager or other host-level supervisor to restart it.
YouTube’s Live Control Room settings for auto-start and auto-stop govern stream behavior; they are not a way to relaunch FFmpeg on your computer or server. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the encoder to be configured with the server URL and stream key.
Prepare and verify the FFmpeg command first
Before adding a restart policy, run your existing FFmpeg command manually and make sure it works. A supervisor repeats a command; it does not fix an invalid command, missing input, incorrect key, full disk, or continuing network fault.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, logs, or public repositories.
- Run the command in a terminal and check FFmpeg’s output for errors.
- Confirm that the encoder feed appears in Live Control Room, preview the stream, and check stream health before relying on automation.
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior does not itself restart an encoder or guarantee recovery after a failure.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure a supervisor to restart FFmpeg
Use a supervisor appropriate to your operating system and deployment. Configure it to restart after an unexpected exit, add a measured delay, and use a restart-rate limit where the supervisor supports one. Exact settings depend on the supervisor; no single unit file or command applies to every operating system or installation.
What the restart policy should do
- Launch the known-good FFmpeg command with the same input, output URL, key handling, and environment it had during the manual test.
- Restart after a failure, with enough delay to avoid a rapid loop if the underlying problem persists.
- Record FFmpeg output and supervisor events somewhere you can inspect.
- Start only after required files, mounts, credentials, and network configuration are available.
Decide whether the policy should restart on nonzero exit only or on any exit. For a continuous stream, an unexpected clean exit may also warrant a restart, but a supervisor that restarts every intentional stop can make maintenance harder. Consult the documentation for your chosen supervisor and test its actual behavior.

Keep credentials and logs manageable
A stream key embedded directly in a command line may be visible to other users or captured in process listings and logs, depending on the host. Prefer a protected configuration or environment mechanism supported by your setup, restrict file permissions, and avoid printing the key when troubleshooting. Check that log rotation or storage limits will not fill the disk during a long-running stream.
Test the restart end to end
- Start the supervised service and verify that FFmpeg is running and the feed is visible in Live Control Room.
- Deliberately terminate the FFmpeg process during a planned test. Do not rely only on restarting the supervisor itself; test the failure the policy is meant to handle.
- Confirm in the supervisor’s status or logs that it detected the exit and launched FFmpeg again.
- Check FFmpeg’s new output, then verify that YouTube receives the encoder feed and the preview recovers.
- Test again after any change to the command, key, input files, service account, or host startup configuration.
YouTube recommends testing the encoder, monitoring stream health, and testing failover—for example, by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting the network. Its streaming guidance also emphasizes upload bandwidth headroom and warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream. A process restart cannot remove those underlying network limits.

Troubleshoot common restart failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits, but nothing starts it again | The supervisor is not watching the right process or its restart policy does not match the exit condition. | Inspect supervisor status and logs; confirm the configured command and restart-on-exit behavior. |
| FFmpeg restarts repeatedly and exits again | The original cause remains, such as a bad command, unavailable input, invalid key, disk exhaustion, or network problem. | Read the latest FFmpeg error and fix the underlying issue before increasing restart frequency. |
| FFmpeg runs but YouTube does not receive the feed | The output URL or stream key may be wrong, or the connection may be impaired. | Check the encoder output and Live Control Room. If YouTube reports a key problem, retrieve the current key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. |
| The feed returns, but the preview or stream health is poor | The process recovered, but bandwidth or another stream-health issue persists. | Monitor stream health, check available upload capacity, and test the network separately from process recovery. |
| A supposed reconnect option has no effect after FFmpeg exits | Protocol reconnect options do not supervise or relaunch a terminated process. | Keep appropriate connection retry options for their supported cases, and configure a separate host-level supervisor for process restarts. |
